Bowl Mania Day 12

Record: 11-9

Rose Bowl: Ohio State v. Oregon

I’ve mentioned it on the air many times in the last few weeks, but I don’t think I’ve written it here. I was dead wrong about Oregon. Alabama too, but we’ll save that crow for next week. In terms of the amount of good teams, you could make an argument that this was the hardest Pac-10 to win in years. Sure, USC has been one of the premier teams in the country for virtually the entire decade, but when has the Pac-10 had as much depth as it currently does? Maybe it was a direct product of having a bulldozing power house like USC take a year off, but this was the best Pac-10 I’ve seen in a long long time.

Oregon lost the heart of their defense in Tommy Chang and suspended their star running back after the first week of the season. Things looked grim for the Ducks. Then we found out how good LeMichael James and Jeremiah Massoli were. James stepped in for Blount at the running back position and actually made people forget about the pre-season Heisman candidate. James ran for 1476 yards and 14 touchdowns. When Blount was reinstated mid season (I guess all is forgiven when you have a real shot at a title), James remained the feature back. I think that says more about the kid than anything else. You know you’re good when a preseason Heisman trophy candidate can’t steel some of your carries.

I love the way the Ducks use Legarette Blount now. For example, in the defacto Pac-10 championship game against Oregon State, James had 25 carries and Blount had nine. He comes in fresh when the defense is on it’s heals. You cannot ask for anything more, if you’re the Ducks. No one talked about it because Blount only played half the season, but this is the best running back tandem in the country.

…and Ohio State might just be the team to stop them. The Buckeye’s have the number five rush defense in the country. They allowed under 14 points a game in a weak Big 10. But I’m always worried about Ohio State on a big stage in January. If history has taught you anything, it’s don’t pick Ohio State in a BCS game. I’ve done it before and gotten burned and won’t do it this year.

Oregon has too many ways to beat you offensively. Part of me, despite the defense, really thinks that Ohio State was the product of a poor conference and is at the low end of the totem pole when it comes to ranking BCS teams 1 through 10. I mean, after all, they are #8. I don’t think Jim Tressel has figured out how to use his quarterback and that will hurt him on a big stage.

The Pick: Oregon

Sugar Bowl- Florida v Cincinnati

Pat Forde of ESPN.com wrote a fantastic piece on how this could be the final game of the Florida dynasty. Ranked from most to least impact on the program, tonight is-

1. The final game for Tim Tebow

2. The final game for many of these defensive players because of the amount of juniors that are going to head for the pros this year.

3. Many of the coordinators final games before they head for head coaching positions

4. Urban Meyer’s “final game”.

I put the Urban Meyer story last because I sincerely believe that he’ll be back on the sideline game one 2010. If not game one 2010, then absolutely game one 2011. The more the story unravels, the more I think it was a rash decision based on a very unfortunate health situation by Meyer last week. I don’t believe for a second that he ever wanted to quit coaching. I think he was scared by his health issues over the last month and phrased the announcement incorrectly last Saturday.

But regardless, next year is going to be a down year for the Gators. This will be their last stand. I love Cinncinatti’s offense, but I get the feeling that they were shocked and hurt by Brian Kelly leaving for South Bend last month. Sometimes when a coach leaves before the bowl game a team is inspired, whether it be for revenge or some other reason.

I don’t buy that Florida won’t play hard because they lost out on a shot to play for the BCS national title game. I actually think it will work the other way. The Gators are angry. They wasted a shot to put a cap on a great era with a national title. Tim Tebow doesn’t want to go out a looser. This defense doesn’t want to go out losers. Don’t think that it’s lost on these players that it’s the last night of the Florida Gators as we know them.

The defense that allowed 12 points a game this season will hold the Bearcat offense in check and the final night of the Florida dynasty will be more comparable to last year’s national title then this year’s failure in the SEC championship game.

The Pick: Florida

Non-BCS picks: for the record….

Capitol One Bowl- Penn State over LSU
Gator Bowl- Florida State over West Virginia
Outback Bowl- Auburn over Northwestern

The Late Game Situation: Fantasy Shots Week 4

As a reader of 3rd String Safety you know that all of us are in some way affiliated with WCWPSports, telling you why you should not be surprised if Tampa Bay drops a 40 burger on the Jets or why Spags took the Rams job just to get his coaching experience for when Coughlin leaves, or even the simpler things like how to pronounce Oshmigo Atogwe?

No matter the reason you tune in, two members of the 3rd String Family, Brandon Steinberger and myself, have provided you with another incentive to check us out. I present to you, College Basketball 2Nite: The Late Game Situation. We want you, our loyal readers, to help track a segment that Stein and I have created called The Late Game Situation Fantasy Shots (SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! Ah Damnit, it doesn’t have the same effect when written, just watch the video on YouTube.)

Anyways this is what the segment consists of. Each week, Stein and I pick 5 players (3 guards, 2 forwards). The players can only be chosen once throughout the season and you select one of their games throughout the week (Sat-Thu) to which they will play. We accumulate their stats for the selected game and see at the week’s end which team performed at a higher level. The statistics are your basics: Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Blocks. Finally, we choose two teams to win one game during the week. The team can only be chosen once and each game is considered to be another category. This is our 4th week of fantasy shots and I am off to an ass-kicking 3-0 start.

Without further ado, here are the picks for Week 4:

Stein’s Team:

G – Xavier Henry, Kansas (17.2 ppg 4 asts) 12/29 vs. Belmont
G – Ronald Moore, Siena (8.5 ppg 8.4 asts) 12/31 vs. St. Peter’s
G – Damion James, Texas (17 ppg 10 reb) 12/29 vs. Gardner Webb
F – Kyle Singler, Duke (15.7 ppg 7 reb) 12/29 vs. Long Beach St.
F – Al-Farouq Aminu, Wake Forest 12/28 (23 pts, 17 reb, 6 blks)

Xavier over LSU (12/29)
Mississippi over Jacksonville St. (12/29)

Soldano’s Team:

G – Rotnei Clarke, Arkansas (20 ppg 3 reb) 12/30 vs. Baylor
G – D.J. Kennedy, St. Johns (16.7 ppg 6 reb) 12/31 vs. Georgetown
G – Dominique Jones, South Florida (18.6 ppg, 6 reb) 12/30 vs. Louisville
F – Wesley Johnson, Syracuse (16.8 ppg 8 reb) 12/29 vs. Seton Hall
F – Storm Warren, LSU (14 ppg 10.7 reb) 12/29 vs. Xavier

UCLA over Delaware State (66-49) 12/27

College Football Week Five Picks

Last Week: 16-7

Season: 71-18

#3 Alabama over Kentucky- This is the last of the “easy ones” for the Crimson Tide. After Kentucky, they play Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, and LSU. The bye comes after Tennessee. How good is ‘bama? We’re about to find out.

#4 LSU over #18 Georgia

#5 Boise State over U.C Davis

#6 Va.Tech over Duke- Not that beating Duke is a challenge, but I think Va Tech has rediscovered it’s identity after being kicked in the you-know-whats after Darren Evans went down. The key: Don’t let Tyrod Taylor throw.

#9 Ohio State over Indiana- Indiana gave Michigan a scare last weekend. This game won’t be that scary for Bucs fans.

#10 Cinncinatti over Miami (OH)- How high can the Bearcats climb? I mean the strength of schedule argument has to kick in at some point right?. Miami of Ohio doesn’t help that argument.

#11 TCU over Southern Methodist

#12 Houston over UTEP- Biggest surprise of ’09 is not Miami. It’s Houston.

#13 Iowa over Arkansas State- Don’t look now. Iowa may be the class of the Big Ten

#15 Penn State over Illinois- I still don’t know a thing about Penn State. But I do know that Illinois is terrible.

#16 Oregon over Washington State- If Washington State wins, will the Legarrette Blount reinstatement rumors vanish?

#21 Ole Miss over Vanderbilt – Ole Miss has to rebound from that bad Thursday night loss to South Carolina.

#25 Georgia Tech over Mississippi State

Notre Dame over Washington- Clausen appears to be healthier then he was last week. ND will eek out another close one.

Two to Change Plans For

#7 USC over #24 California- All the pressure is on USC if Cal beats Oregon last week. They didn’t and now the roles are reversed. Cal cannot afford to loose this game. USC knows this and will use it to their advantage…. And so goes the biggest “fall from grace” story in 2009. Looks like another year looking up at USC for Cal.

#8 Oklahoma over #17 Miami- Oklahoma need this game more than Miami does. A second loss hurts more in the Big 12 than it does in the weaker A.C.C. Desperation gets the win in this one.

Upset of The Week

Michigan State over #22 Michigan
- I know what you’re thinking. “There goes Jordan’s anti-Michigan bias again.” I swear it’s not that. This is Michigan’s first road game of the year, in a hostel environment to boot. I expect Tate the Great to struggle a bit early and Michigan to fall just short.
