UFC 115: Couture-Franklin Being Discussed...

How many over the hill former champs can we put on one card? Apparently, the UFC is trying to set the record on UFC 115. Sherdog reports that Rich “Ace” Franklin and Randy “The Natural” Couture could be going to war alongside Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

Randy Couture, fresh off his submission win over fellow hall of famer Mark Coleman may be heading back to the Octagon this June to take on former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.

The fight is in the early planning stages, and Couture confirmed to Sherdog.com on Thursday that he has been broached about it. He said he had to contemplate committing to the bout due to prior commitments with his film acting career.

Couture’s budding acting career should be put aside until he finishes up as a fighter. End of story.

Nevertheless, it’s interesting that we finally seem to know what the plan for Franklin was all along. He’s been healing some injuries since being knocked out by Vitor Belfort at UFC 103. Franklin has lost two of this last three fights and the one that he won was a decision of Wanderlei Silva that I’m not sure sure he should have won. This would be Franklin’s first fight at 205 since fighting Ken Shamrock at the first Ultimate Fighter Finale. That’s a long ass time.

I know that it’s early, but I got Randy in this fight. I don’t want to underestimate Franklin’s standup, but I love Randy’s boxing and the way he uses it to set up takedowns. So, I’m rolling with the old guy.

Griffin v. Dunham At UFC 115…

I’m clairvoyant. I must be. Just the other day, I was talking about how Tyson Griffin doesn’t have a fight announced. Now, he’s going to be taking on his training partner Evan Dunham at UFC 115. From Bloody Elbow:

A lightweight showdown pitting the returning Tyson Griffin against the emerging Evan Dunham is on tap for UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver.

MMAWeekly.com sources on Tuesday night said the bout has been agreed to, but not yet signed.

Here is another case for Dana White to use against the wonderful fighters of the American Kickboxing Academy. They refuse to fight each other, which is causing a HUUUGE log jam in the Welterweight division.

As for the fight, Dunham is an impressive 10-0 and coming off a win against Efrain Escudero where he almost broke the TUF 8 winner’s arm. However, he is running into a buzzsaw in Griffin.

Griffin is in the top tier of lightweights right now alongside Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard. As a matter of fact, if he doesn’t get hurt, we could be seeing him take on B.J. Penn at UFC 112. I think alot of people have forgotten how good he is in his absence.

Give me Griffin via TKO early.

Condit v. McDonald At UFC 115...

The Natural Born Killer will be back in the cage taking one of the hottest prospects in MMA. From MMA Mania:

Former WEC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit (24-5), is in talks to take on King of the Cage star Rory MacDonald (10-0), at UFC 115 from the General Motors Place in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, on June 15.

MMAmania.com learned of the pending match up earlier today.

Condit was one of the prized holdovers from the WEC takeover. He is 24-5 overall, with a 1-1 record in the UFC. His last fight was a decision victory over Jake Ellenberger. He possess great length and a good all-around game, but the question is how ready is he for the next level of competition in the UFC?

MacDonald is the MMA equivalent of the hot girl at the end of the bar that everyone is drooling over right now. Before joining the UFC, MacDonald was 9-0 at age 20, but hadn’t really fought anyone of note. Then, he comes into the UFC and wins easily against Mike “Joker” Guymon and proves that the hype is worthy.

As for the fight, I’m not sure it makes a whole lot of sense. It will certainly show us where MacDonald stands, but will beating Condit really elevate his status? For Condit, I could see using the fight as a “heat check” if he had won a couple in a row, but as it stands, I’m not sure how much I get the logic.

Give me Condit via decision over the young guy.

Koscheck/Daley Likely?

Paul Daley is in a bunch of trouble. I wrote already that he wouldn’t stand much of a chance against either Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck. While Daley wanted to fight Thiago Alves, Dana White had made it clear that it would be Fitch or Koscheck.

The reason why became more clear today when Fitch and Alves were put together to fight at UFC 111. Now, by some simple math and the process of elimination, Daley and Koscheck will likely be matched up. This one comes to us courtesy the dude with the coolest job at ESPN, Jon Anik.

Any word on when Kos is returning and who he is expected to fight?

Jon Anik: “Reports are it could be Paul Daley in May or June. Trying to confirm.”

Well, it didn’t take much of a brain surgeon to figure that it was going to happen, but that doesn’t put Daley is trouble any less. His only hope is a Paulo Thiago type knockout.

Donnie Swings and Misses: Revisiting June’s Draft

Despite the 2009-10 NBA Season being a week old, I have come to the decision that Donnie Walsh blew it in June’s Draft when he had the number eight overall pick. I understand that Walsh had his hands tied when Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio were already picked but I still cannot come to terms as to why Donnie Walsh believed that with their lottery pick Jordan Hill was the best option.

In my mock drafts, specifically leading up to the actual night of, I pegged the Knicks selecting Hill only because of the admiration the organization had for the former Wildcat. It is obvious though that there were two players that Walsh should have selected two guys before the thought of Hill crossed their minds. Ty Lawson and more specifically, Brandon Jennings, fit the Knicks plans and design and unfortunately, Donnie swung and missed…big time.

Hill has played in one game this year and has played a grand total of two minutes. Now no one thought he would come in and be a rookie of the year caliber type of player but no one thought he would be this far behind in terms of getting up to NBA speed and development. Compare those stats to Ty Lawson of the Denver Nuggets who is currently averaging 9 points and 3 assists in a backup role to Chauncey Billups in less than 20 minutes of play. I always thought Lawson would be a guy who could perfectly fit the bill with D’Antoni’s run and gun style. He is averaging a 5:1 Assists/Turnover ratio. That is how you play point guard folks.

Without Blake Griffin, Brandon Jennings has stolen the spotlight for this year’s rookies putting up ridiculous numbers for the Milwaukee Bucks. With a line of 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, Jennings has stolen the show and makes the departure of Ramon Sessions a forgotten thought. While he drew criticisms for leaving Arizona to play in Italy, Jennings has proven the inconsistency shown overseas was all a fluke, and his American game translates much better.

So where does Jordan Hill fit? Mike D’Antoni has already converted Wilson Chandler to the 4 to play similarly to Shawn Marion when D’Antoni was in Phoenix and he has David Lee at center. With Gallo and Al Harrington also being able to play the 3 and the 4, the need for Hill is perplexing. If Donnie Walsh felt there was a pressing need for a big man, why did he not draft Brook Lopez over Gallinari in 2008? Has Gallo proven anything in the NBA besides the fact that 75% of his shots this season have been 3 pointers? If I wanted that, give me Jason Kapono for a fraction of the money and draft Lopez.

The track record for Donnie Walsh’s draft picks have been less than impressive. Here are a list of the first round picks since Walsh began drafting with the Indiana Pacers.

The Good: Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, Al Harrington, Danny Granger,

The Bad: George McCloud, Dale Davis, Travis Best, Erick Dampier, Vonteego Cummings

The Ugly: Malik Sealy, Scott Haskin, Eric Piatkowski, Austin Croshere, Primoz Brezec, Fred Jones, David Harrison, Jonathan Bender, Shawne Williams

The names don’t lie. Walsh has put all of his chips onto the table by acquiring expiring contract after expiring contract. If Walsh is unable to land Lebron James, what will the reaction be then from Knicks fans? With no 2010 first round pick (which would have surely land them in the lottery) when can the Knicks address the point guard situation? Can Toney Douglas actually assume the full-time position next year? Doubt it. All Knicks fans can do now is watch Jordan Hill continually disappoint hopefuls by sitting on the bench while Brandon Jennings continues to soar in Wisconsin. Who knows, maybe he will start to take Packer fans minds off of Brett Favre.
