Paulo Filho To Fight Hector Lombard For Bellator...

Paulo Filho is fighting in America once again.

According to Brazilian magazine, TATAME, Filho will take on Bellator champion Hector Lombard at the company’s May 20th event. Just warning you now, everything through the link is in Portuguese. Enjoy.

Filho made news last month when he bailed on a Bitetti Combat show just hours before the weigh-in. He later said that he never agreed to financial terms with the company. Filho is also infamous for antics like this other places, as he seems to suffer from serious depression and other mental instabilities. However, he does have a sweet new face tattoo.

Lombard won the Bellator middleweight title by defeating Jared Hess in last year’s tournament final. Since then, he 3-0 including a win over former UFC punchline Kalib Starnes.

How do I feel about the fight? I’d rather just post you a tweet from SI’s Josh Gross.

RT @MTFIII @SI_JoshGross – Your thoughts on Filho vs. Lombard at the 5/20 Bellator show? … Believe it when I see it.

Barnett Returns To The Cage At DREAM 13...

It was Late July last year when Josh Barnett single-handedly sunk the Affliction promotion by peeing in a cup. When he tested positive for a third time, he ruined a potential bout with the world’s best heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko and forced the card to be canceled and the the promotion to be shut down. Since then, Barnett has not sniffed a fight.

As usual, here come the Japanese to welcome another substance abuser into the fold. At a DREAM press conference, the Japanese promotion announced that Barnett would be on their 13th card.

He doesn’t have an opponent yet, but SI’s Josh Gross reported a possible matchup with “Mighty Mo” Siliga.

The question is, how relevant is Barnett at this point? Does America really care about Josh Barnett at this point? Is anyone going to rush to the TV to watch Barnett fight? The answer to that question is likely no. However, Barnett may have his own version of a saving grace. Fedor’s management has decreed that they would like to fight him at some point, and it isn’t impossible to think that Strikeforce would allow Fedor to fight in DREAM so that Barnett wouldn’t have to pass a steroid test. Remember, DREAM and Strikeforce have a co-promotional deal where they share fighters. That’s how we ended up with Nick Diaz pummeling Marius Zaromskis.

You’ll have to excuse me if I remain somewhat apathetic to Barnett until he fights in the states, or fights Fedor.

The Importance of A Good Cornerman…

I am still amazed by how many people think that strategy is a big part of mixed martial arts. How much money does Greg Jackson have to make before people realize that having a good corner is just important as being well prepared for your fight.

Just ask Mark Coleman. Coleman brought former Randy Couture confidant Shawn Tompkins to the cage with him, and Tompkins gave him some TERRRIBLE advice. Here’s what Josh Gross of SI.com had to say about it:

“Coleman made Couture’s night easy when, at the advice of his trainer Shawn Tompkins and the despite the fact it has never been his path to victory, he chose to stand and trade.”

“…Shortly into the bout, Coleman carried the attitude of a confused athlete, one who was thinking instead of fighting.”

“Between the first and second round, Coleman looked up at Tompkins as the Canadian offered instructions on how to keep distance and how to fire off combination. I’m fairly certain he would have loved if Tompkins told him to run out there and take a shot on a double-leg. If you’re going to go out, go out at what you do best.”

Who besides Tompkins could possibly believe that Coleman had any chance standing and trading with Couture? Over the last few years, Couture has drilled his boxing to the point where it is on par with his wrestling. He has some of the best head movement in the game. As supposed to Coleman, who had no head movement.

What a joke.

Penn’s Trainer: GSP is Juicing…

Here we go again with the excuses. Here’s what Penn’s boxing trainer Rudy Valentino had to say in an interview with SI’s Josh Gross:

“I think it’s because of his so-called steroid use, and all of that, that B.J. felt it was an unfair fight. Just the whole thing about not being fair, and fighting fair, you know. That’s what B.J. wants to get off of his back; The greasing stuff, the steroids, and all of that”.

“We heard from certain people that used to train with him, telling us what he did in the past. That’s why, we had a heads up on that. When you cycle steroids, you’re not going to test positive. You can cycle it right up to the time of the fight and not test positive on that. That’s what we suspected he did in this fight”.

Or here’s the other crazy option: The dude is huge and much much bigger than Penn. That’s why he was able to take the Hawaiian down so easily.

Until we have proof, I don’t want to hear about anyone in MMA being on steroids anymore. Are there probably some people who are? Absolutely. However, unless people are willing to give them up, or they fail a drug test, we can’t go around pointing fingers.
