UFC 107 Impressions

Stefan Struve defeats Paul Buentello

Judges had it 29-28, 29-28 and 28-28, a majority draw, for Struve.

Not Struve’s best effort.  His unique frame makes him a hell of a prospect but he needs a lot of work.  His kickboxing is…raw?  I guess that sounds better then awful.  His height makes his uppercut a weapon but he only threw it a few times this fight.  His leg kicks should be devastating but, he doesn’t turn his hip into the kick and it limits it’s power.   He also gassed very early on in the fight.

Buentello looked pretty good.  He is what he is.  A great boxer with limited skills otherwise.  He’s a good guy to have around for the UFC, he’s always a game competitor.

Kenny Florian defeats Clay Guida

Florian dropped Guida with a big right hand and then sunk in a rear naked choke.

Really impressed with Florian.  Probably the first time I’ve said that in his entire career.  His boxing looked great and he didn’t have to rely on his muay thai and leg kicks.  In his post fight interview he said that he “worked on shorting up his strikes” and it definitely showed.  More importantly his wrestling looked great, he stuffed most of Guida’s shots and even had a big slam of his own.

I bet next time we see Ken-Flo it’s in Boston.

Guida has to improve his stand up.  He’s relentless and always exciting in the cage but needs to continue to improve to stay relevant.

Jon Fitch defeats Mike Pierce

Fitch might now have the stigma of being a fighter that only takes fights to decisions.  Not the most exciting fight but Fitch continues to do what he has to do to win.

Pierce showed some impressive power and wrestling.

Frank Mir knocks out Kongo

Mir killed Kongo.  A big left floored him and then a choke put him to sleep.  Can’t say much more then

Wow.  Mir is driven by Lesnar and it showed.  Mir is bigger and stronger, if he can retain his speed and cardio with the extra weight he is a serious threat to Brock.

BJ Penn destroys Diego Sanchez

What can I say?  That was one of the most dominant performances I can remember.  BJ stuffed every shot Diego tried.  When Diego would grab a single BJ would punish him with uppercuts.  BJ picked Sanchez apart on the feet.  He was toying with him, he could have finished him at anytime.  But, Penn wanted to prove a point.  He wanted to prove he could go into the championship rounds.  He wanted to prove he had the cardio.  He wanted to shed the “he doesn’t train” label.  And he did all that.  Penn took a guy that’s unanimously considered a top 10 lightweight and made him look like a fool.

His last 5 lightweight fights:

- Destroyed Jens Pulver.

- Made Joe Stevenson’s head explode.

- Toyed with Sherk for 3 rounds before kneeing him in the face.

- Choked out Florian.

- Made Diego look like this:

The Prodigy is a living legend.

UFC Undisputed 2010 To Be Released on May 25th

And the day is already circled on my calendar.

European video game site VG247 confirmed the date yesterday:

THQ has confirmed, after a GameStop flier broke the news, that its UFC 2010 will be released next year on May 25.

This is important for several reasons. First off, I’m fucking pumped. Last year’s effort was a solid start, but featured several problems that really kept it from being among my favorite sports games of all time. The ground game made sense, but it was far to easy to get to mount, and for too hard to get out of it. This led to a bunch of morons online who did nothing but shoot takedowns, get to mount and hold the right stick so they simply couldn’t be reversed. Other problems included an out of date rosters that lacked up and comers like Jon Jones and Clay Guida, and a career mode that didn’t reward you or provide a unique experience each time through.

The other important thing about the date is that THQ has some competition for the MMA crown this year from EA Sports MMA. THQ had said in interviews that they were desperate to get their game out as fast as possible to get the jump on the UFC-less EA effort. This would provide the final nail in the coffin for the game, as only the hardcores would buy two MMA games, especially when most casual fans won’t know who most of the fighters in the EA game are. Fedor? Who’s Fedor?

The UFC Undisputed 2010 trailer will debut of Spike TV’s Video Game Awards on Saturday Night. We’ll have video of it here as soon as we get our grubby little hands on it.

All I Want For Christmas Is 10 Percent Of The Raiders!

Here’s an interesting article from PFT. Got a few million dollars hanging around? Then you can own part of the worst run franchise in the history of sports!

As a world of children and grown-up children who act like adults so the children won’t get scared begin to make out their Christmas wish lists, here’s a item for consideration.

A 10-percent stake in the Oakland Raiders.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the the team is trying to sell that amount of franchise, in an effort to raise money.

We’ve separately learned that, while a partial sale is possible, the efforts aren’t yet fully active. No investment firm has been engaged, for example, and no aggressive attempt has been made to scare up a buyer.

Per a league source, the reality in Oakland is that the limited partnership contains several aging members (or, in some cases, the widows of deceased members). Some of the members might want to dilute their interest in the team.

So, here’s the plan: If someone is willing to back us, Jason and I come up with a big plan to basically rebuild the Raiders. It may or may not involve creatively getting rid of Al Davis. We’re kidding. As if he could be killed by conventional weapons.

First Video of EA Sports MMA!

After playing UFC Undisputed 2009 for roughly six million hours, It turned out as a great first effort from THQ, but ultimately somewhat of a flawed experience. Everyone who plays online and hugs the right stick, I’m talking to you, asshole.

Anyone, EA is getting in the cage and showed the first video of their effort right before Fedor ate Brett Rogers soul on Saturday Night.

Check it out.

Urijah Faber’s New Silver Star T-Shirt!

It’s been quite awhile since we’ve heard from Urijah.

The world’s most popular featherweight MMA fighter, and Twitter machine has been recovering from his loss to Mike Thomas Brown. A fight in which he broke one of his hands and dislocated fingers on another. There are those who have suggested that “The California Kid” became even more popular in his loss than he ever was before it, due to his gritty effort. He was unable to throw a punch from round three on, relying on ineffective knees and elbows. However, he still finished the fight and didn’t quit.

He’s not expected back in the WEC cage until January, but that didn’t stop Silver Star from putting out another shirt dedicated to him.

The style is kind of a combination of the Frank Trigg UFC 103 walk-out with the monogram and Lyoto Machida’s UFC 104 Walk-out with some new and bright colors. I like this one, but it’s still not as cool his older one.

MMA Warehouse has it for 39.99

Anderson Silva Wants To Fight At Heavyweight; Eyes Frank Mir

My god. Does this man ever stop? Will he ever fight at 185 again, or is that belt just going to disappear in the back of his closet? What is his obsession with fighting up?

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Sherdog is reporting that Anderson Silva is going to move to heavyweight now, This is after his most recent bout was at 205 lbs, when he dismantled Forrest Griffin at UFC 101. Silva is still the 185 lbs champ, and has a number one contender waiting for him in Dan Henderson. He has also discussed dropping his title in an effort to pursue the biggest fights.

The endgame of all of this is easy to see. He wants to fight Brock Lesnar. Simply put, that would be the biggest fight in MMA history, and if nothing else, would put a ton of money in his pocket before Silva walks away into the sunset, or into the boxing ring to fight Roy Jones. That being said, we’ve always said on this site that in order to beat Lesnar, you would need to have at least comparable size to stop his takedowns. Silva would walk into the ring at 215 or 220 compared to Brock’s 280. Not good, but if anyone could stop Brock, it would be the man who I frequently refer to as a ninja because of his skills on the feet.

However, am I the only one thinking that this is getting a little bit ridiculous? Imagine if Silva played any other sport. Think about this for a second, what if Andre Johnson decided that he had done all that he could playing wide receiver and wanted to play safety. Could you imagine the backlash? Beat writers would crucify him, talking heads would talk about how selfish he is, and his teammates would want to kill him. However, since he is a fighter we let him get away with it. Isn’t it the same thing? One guy who thinks that there is no one that can keep up with him doing one thing, so he decides to do another.

Personally, I think it’s getting hard to take Silva too seriously.
