Morning Matchmaking: Belcher v. Maia Targeted for UFC Fight Night 22

What a fight. We get the only man ever to complain about Joe Silva v. the other guy from the Anderson Silva UFC 112 debacle.

According to MMA Fighting: (Which makes it true)

A middleweight match-up between Alan Belcher and Demian Maia has been verbally agreed to by both fighters for Ultimate Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, MMA Fighting has learned from sources close to the event.

The yet-to-be announced event is expected to be followed by the premiere of the 12th season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV.

Maia (12-2) is coming off a middleweight title loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. The loss marked his second in three fights. He holds notable wins over Dan Miller, Chael Sonnen and Nate Quarry.

Belcher (16-6) has won four of his last five fights. He most recently defeated Patrick Cote at UFC 113 earlier this month. He also has defeated the likes of Wilson Gouveia, Denis Kang and Ed Herman.

So, how will this one play out? It’s actually an excellent fight with a lot of wrinkles. Alan Belcher will likely try to keep the fight standing in order to stay away from Maia’s best, and only, offensive weapon, his submissions. Belcher is a good striker in addition to an decently explosive athlete. While Maia showed improved striking in the fight against Dan Miller, he isn’t going to bang with Belcher and win.

That leaves the fight in the hands of Maia’s takedowns. Can Maia get Belcher to the ground? Probably. He doesn’t have to shoot in and put him on his back, because his best chance may actually be using his guard to submit Belcher. As we know, I don’t believe that being on your back is ever an advantage, and It may end up biting Maia in the end.

That’s right, I’m taking the dude with the terrible Johnny Cash tattoo in an upset.
