Uh-Oh: Anthony Johnson Off of UFC on Versus Card

In late 2009, the UFC suffered there worst injury plague in their 10-plus year history. They lost main carder after main carder and had to cobble together main events for at least three events. In 2010, we were to see a return to form. After all, that couldn’t happen again could it?

We certainly hope not, but the after the last couple of days, I’m beginning to get worried. First, Vitor Belfort has to pull out of the main event of UFC 112, and now Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is injured and out of UFC on Versus. Pro MMA Now broke the story.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (8-3) has had to pull out of his highly anticipated March 21 “UFC on Versus” bout with John “Doomsday” Howard (13-4) due to a knee injury. Pro MMA Now (www.prommanow.com) was notified of the bout cancellation this evening from an associate who spoke directly to Howard’s manager.

“Rumble’s” last fight was a second round submission loss to Josh Koscheck at UFC 106 in November. “Doomsday” is on a five fight win streak, he is still undefeated (3-0) in the UFC, and is coming off a spectacular come-from-behind knockout win over legendary MMA veteran Dennis Hallman at the “TUF 10 Finale” in December.

Well, there goes another good fight down the tubes. Johnson also pulled out of the TUF 9 Finale against Matt Brown with a knee injury. Here’s hoping that it’s not a lingering problem. Johnson’s last fight was a loss where he was dominanted by top five welterweight Josh Koscheck.

No word yet on who will face Howard at UFC’s first card on Versus.

Tyson Griffin TapouT Signature Shirt

A few months ago, a debate was sparked regarding who was the most deserving contender for the lightweight title. There were three candidates: Tyson Griffin, Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard. All three had fights in December or early January. It was assumed that who ever was the most impressive would receive the shot.

Unfortunately, Griffin had to pull out of his fight with Jim Miller due to injury. We are waiting for confirmation for when he’ll back in the octagon, but hope he gets well soon.

Until then, support Tyson by buying his new TapouT Signature Shirt.

Has a very Silverstar look to it, doesn’t it? The back has the monogram of Griffin’s initials with the saying “Eye of an eagle, Heart of a Lion” on it.

MMA Warehouse has the hook-up for 35.99.

Is The UFC Loading Up The Abu Dhabi Card?

Okay. Let me get this straight. On the same day that B.J. Penn says that his next fight is going to be on the UFC 112 card in Abu Dhabi, Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort is rumored to be on that same date?

Weird.

While the UFC is introducing their brand to the middle eastern audience, it seems weird that they would choose to defend two belts on the same night. Silva and Penn are two of the biggest draws that the UFC has in their pockets. I know for a fact that there are a ton of people out there who are excited to see The Spider pushed by a fighter who is at least close to his level. Is Vitor close to Silva’s level? Who knows? At the very least, I’m excited to find out.

As for Penn, there is a bit of a question about which weight class this fight will be in. If it’s going to be in April, then it could be a title defense. Assuming that the top two lightweights in contention right now are Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, it would give both of them a chance to train for the fight. Edgar is coming off a defeat of decent prospect Matt Veach, and Gray Maynard will fight this Monday against Nate Diaz. Assuming Maynard beats Diaz, then he would have more than two full months to train. Edgar last fought in December, so he even has a head start.

The other option is B.J. fighting at welterweight. It’s not that crazy to think. While Dana might have said that he needs to clean out the division, and that would take another win, it wouldn’t be that nuts to see him fight a top ten welterweight in an attempt to put together a massive show for their first trek into a new territory.

I’m not a fan of loading cards up like this. Look at last July and UFC 100. Sure, that was an awesome card. However, what happened after that? UFC 101 was headlined by B.J. Penn, and that is fine. However, 102 was Couture and Nog, which while it was an awesome fight, isn’t the strongest main event. They sold that card on the fact that Couture would be fighting in his home area of Portland. At UFC 103, Vitor Belfort defeated Rich Franklin. There needs to be an understanding about Franklin. America loves him, but he is just not a main event draw. A ton of people pointed at the Mayweather fight that night as the reason why the card barely drew, but I beleive that it’s more because Franklin just isn’t really a draw.

The next few cards suffered because of UFC 100. How much better would it look if the UFC held off GSP v. Alves til UFC 101, and had B.J. fight at UFC 102?

Couture and Big Nog could have been an awesome semi-main at either of those cards. Remember what the semi-main of 102 was? The wonderful Thiago Silva knockout of Keith Jardine from the “I saw that coming” file. Hell, even if they would have kept that and moved Franklin down to Semi-main, the cards would have looked better.

So, after all those words, let me say this. The source on Silva and Belfort is TATAME, which is a brazillian source. Let’s just say it’s not the New York Times. While it might be true, there is a chance that it’s not.

While it might seem incredible to look at a card like this and say “Sick, I’m so ordering that!” it’s just not good business for the month-to-month plan.

Matt Moore At Quarterback, Please?

Being from New York, and having friends who are Jets fans, I end up watching every single Jet game. More often than not, I wind up taking more away from watching the other team.

Yesterday, I watched the Carolina Panthers never have a chance in a game because their 86 year old starting quarterback simply can’t get it done anymore. Even worse, I’ve watched a coach who I have a ton of respect for in John Fox, stick with Jake Delhomme for far too long.

While everyone has been taking the position of “How can it get any worse?,” I’m going more along the lines of “Do you remember who your backup is?” There was a time when people were sniffing around trading for Matt Moore to be their starter, and now Fox refused to put him in the game.

Moore was an offensive rookie of the month in December of his first year. He led his team to a victory over the Cowboys in his first start. He’s got a career of 57%. He’s tall, has a big arm and can make plays, so why has it taken this long for Moore to get the start.

I’m just not sure. However, If I had to guess, I would guess that Fox’s loyalty has to do with his roots. He comes from an Giants organization who has been loyal to a fault. They’ve stuck with coaches and players when almost no one else would. That might have something to do with why Fox has insisted on keeping Jake in the lineup for so long.

The Panthers aren’t going to make the playoffs, and there are rumors that Fox will be out if they don’t. If he is, I’d love to have him back as the defensive coordinator of the Giants. At least, he won’t be able to leave anyone in too long on D. C.C. Brown will be off the team by then.

Hutchinson Didn’t Hold In 91 Games…

Ladies and Gentlemen, Steve Hutchinson is just awesome. For as much credit as we give Adrian Peterson, people need to start giving more to the awesome offensive line that he plays behind. From Rotoworld:

Vikings LG Steve Hutchinson was flagged for holding in Sunday’s win over Green Bay for the first time since December of 2003.
The penalty negated a two-yard run by Adrian Peterson. Hutchinson also didn’t miss a start during his incredible 91-game streak, which included five playoff games. The six-time Pro Bowler has a Hall of Fame resume at age 32.

Wow. Let’s think about that for one second. I would say that the average offensive linemen gets called for holding at least once every three games. That’s probably being generous. By that logic, Hutchinson is worth 300 yards over an average guard over this stretch just on penalties alone; Let alone the fact that he is awesome.

Well played, Steve.
