The Importance of A Good Cornerman…

I am still amazed by how many people think that strategy is a big part of mixed martial arts. How much money does Greg Jackson have to make before people realize that having a good corner is just important as being well prepared for your fight.

Just ask Mark Coleman. Coleman brought former Randy Couture confidant Shawn Tompkins to the cage with him, and Tompkins gave him some TERRRIBLE advice. Here’s what Josh Gross of SI.com had to say about it:

“Coleman made Couture’s night easy when, at the advice of his trainer Shawn Tompkins and the despite the fact it has never been his path to victory, he chose to stand and trade.”

“…Shortly into the bout, Coleman carried the attitude of a confused athlete, one who was thinking instead of fighting.”

“Between the first and second round, Coleman looked up at Tompkins as the Canadian offered instructions on how to keep distance and how to fire off combination. I’m fairly certain he would have loved if Tompkins told him to run out there and take a shot on a double-leg. If you’re going to go out, go out at what you do best.”

Who besides Tompkins could possibly believe that Coleman had any chance standing and trading with Couture? Over the last few years, Couture has drilled his boxing to the point where it is on par with his wrestling. He has some of the best head movement in the game. As supposed to Coleman, who had no head movement.

What a joke.

UFC 103: Vitor Belfort’s Cornerman Shirt

Don’t ask me why it isn’t called his walkout shirt, because he did wear it to the ring. However, regardless of what it’s called, it is one of the simpler shirts in MMA.

Personally, I’m excited about what’s next for Vitor. Dana seems to want to fast track him into a fight with Anderson Silva. While I still think that the Spider has the best shot of winning that fight, we saw what Vitor’s hands can due to a fighter that makes a mistake. If Silva starts to get goofy in that fight, than Vitor can make him pay and end the fight very quickly.

Check out MMA Warehouse to get the shirt for 26.99.

Stevenson Takes On Fisher At UFC 104

I took it easy for a couple of days. There wasn’t much news and I had a ton of stuff to do. However, I’m back and I bring with me news of a great lightweight fight at whats shaping up to the be the one of the best UFC cards of the year. MMA Weekly; Take it away.

Lightweight standouts Joe Stevenson and Spencer Fisher are expected to meet at UFC 104 on Oct. 24, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to the fight. Though bout agreements have not been signed as of yet, both fighters have agreed to the contest.

UFC 104 is set for the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It is the promotion’s second trip to the L.A. Lakers home after UFC 60 in May 2006 featuring Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie.

These two fighters are both trying to string together some wins to get themselves back in contention for the gold. Stevenson was once considered one of the best in the division before he lost to B.J. Penn in a title fight, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. In his last fight, he debuted his new coaching staff that includes cornerman extraordinaire Greg Jackson, and Muay Thai striking coach Mark Della Grotte. Stevenson dominanted Brazillian jiu-jitsu ace Nate Diaz.

Fisher is known as being one of the best “action fighters” in the lightweight division, which is both a blessing and a curse. He’s coming off a defeat of Caol Uno at UFC 99 in Germany. Before that, he also lost two in a row to Hermes Franca and (future UFC lightweight Champion) Frankie Edgar.

I think that we are going to start seeing the best Joe Stevenson that we’ve ever seen. That’s why I’ll talk him in a walk in October.
