Fighting In The Canadian Wildnerness? Kick A Downed Opponent!

Fine, Vancouver is not exactly the wilderness, but they are eschewing the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts in exchange for a more PRIDE-style set of guidelines.

The Edmonton Combative Sports Director – Pat Reid has proposed some of the following rules be in place for 2010 in Edmonton:

• Knee strikes to the head of a downed/grounded opponent are legal.
• Gi and shoes can be worn during a bout.
• Two rounds will be utilized, the first being ten minutes and the second round lasting five minutes.
• Bouts will be judged on their entirety, no ten-point must system will be used
• Kicks to the head of a downed/grounded opponent are legal when both fighters are down/grounded.

There is a reason that some of these things were deemed illegal. If someone is really going to get hurt, it’s going to be from a knee or kick while downed. Also, while I don’t completely trust the ten-point must system, I don’t think that going back to the old PRIDE system is a better alternative.

Here’s my main beef: We are really going to start letting people wear Gis? What is this 1995? I have enough of a problem with Shinya Aoki’s stupid pants, and now people are wearing Gis again?

Stupid.

Another New GSP Affliction Shirt!

Jesus, how many of these can Affliction put out in a six month span? This is the THIRD new Georges St. Pierre shirt since Affliction stopped promoting MMA events.

That doesn’t make this one any less cool though.

I love the color combination of the red and the black. As usual, they find a way to get the Fleur de lis on the French Canadian’s shirts.

It’s available at MMA Warehouse for 57.99

Looking for more GSP gear? It’s in The 3rd String Store.

How To Stumble to a 65

If it was anybody else, it would be an absolute disaster. We’re talking serious “not-top ten” material. If it were anyone else, he would be forever emblemized in golf folly lore. It would be forever known as “shooting a (insert name here)”

But for Tiger Woods, a round in which everything seemed to go comically wrong turned into a seven under 65 and sole possession of the lead in the Buick Open.

Where to begin? Well, Tiger drove his tee shot onto adjacent fairways two separate times. He hit a spectator’s beer. He was seemingly bothered by an insect. That sounds like a round that would rival John Daily’s atrocious 88 in the second round this week.

But that’s precisely what makes Tiger Tiger. When Woods is on, he doesn’t make lemonade out of lemons, he makes fine wine out of them. This was seen in the 2008 U.S Open when he shot a ball off the cart path that will live in golf lore forever. He hit some similar shots yesterday.

At 13, he shot a fantastic approach shot that led to a birdie. Doesn’t seem that impressive? What if I told you that the approach shot came from the fairway at four?

So yes, Tigers recent problems off the tee returned today. But he didn’t let it effect him. I have a feeling that this is the beginning of a long “in the zone” period for him. Despite a sometimes frustrating day, he still made eight birdies in the third round and bogeyed only one hole (number 8).

For a while, it looked like Tiger would have to wait for Sunday to make his final move towards sole possession of first. Michael Letzig was holding his own. Through 17, Letzig had bogeyed only one hole and birdied seven. It was a round that was shaping up to be better then Tiger’s.

But then, like many who panic at the site of a tiger making ground their rear view mirror, Letzig panicked. After failing to get his green side bunker shot past the lip, Letzig double bogeyed 18. This moved him one back of Tiger.

Looking for a non-Tiger story line for Sunday? How about Michael Letzig. Will his double bogey on 18 follow him around his front 9 tomorrow like the ghost of a disliked relative? Or will he be able to choke his follies at 18 up to one bad hole and start anew. After all, he was tearing up the course through the first 17.

One thing that works against Letzig is his inexperience playing at the top on Sunday. His best finish this season came at the RBC Canadian Open when he tied for 8th. Prior to that, he had finished in the top 20 only twice this year. He said all the right things in his post-round presser about forgetting what happened at 18 and realizing he’s one shot off, but I’m not so sure it’s that easy.

Especially when the man your chasing is a Tiger Woods who has looked possessed in the last two rounds.

Patrick Cote Wants Back In At UFC 104…

The last time the viewing public saw Cote he was on his back in the middle of the octagon cursing his knee. He blew it up in the middle of his title fight with Anderson Silva and hasn’t been able to get back in the ring. Now, MMA Weekly has an interview with him that sheds some light on where he thinks he’s headed.

MMAWeekly: You did say prior to UFC 100 that you’d like to face Michael Bisping if he defeated Dan Henderson. That didn’t happen—what did you think about Bisping’s performance?

Cote: I think he had a stupid game plan. I was there; I did the French pay per view so I was cageside. He was always turning into his right hand, and Dan Henderson made his career with his overhand right. So it was just a question of time until Bisping got caught. I found that a little bit strange. And Bisping looked very nervous; he looked tight. So I wasn’t surprised at all. After the first round, I said in the second round it will be done.

MMAWeekly: Do you still want to face him?

Cote: Yeah, I want everybody. I don’t care. But I don’t think Bisping needs a fighter like me to fight right now. Right now, I want a big fight that’s going to put me on top of the middleweight division.

Ohhhh, Those are some awful tough words from the French Canadian. I think that he and Bisping would actually make one hell of a fight. They both like to stand and strike, and both of them have kickboxing backgrounds. It would be a three round war in my opinion.

I hope the best for Patrick. According to him, he’ll know soon when he will be able to fight again. He’s aiming for UFC 104 in LA.

GSP: Florian Will Beat Penn…

Continuing our theme of fighter predictions from earlier in the day, MMAWeekly has some quotes from Georges St. Pierre that suggest his help is going to put Kenny Florian over the top at UFC 101 in Philly:

“I’ve trained with him two times and he looked really sharp. I put my money on him against B.J. Penn,” St. Pierre stated.

The Canadian has put together some of the most legendary camps to prepare for his title fights, so his physical and mental strategy could be a key edge that Florian will carry into the fight in August.

St. Pierre complemented Florian for the work they did together while in Montreal, and he’s confident that Penn will have no answer for what Florian will bring into the title fight.

“Kenny Florian is a great training partner, and is going to be a great champion, and he’s also a greater person and human being (than B.J. Penn),” said St. Pierre.

Much like his own strategy and gameplan, he wouldn’t let anything out of the bag as to what Florian will do to beat Penn, but he is boastful that it will happen.

“A lot of things, but they are part of his gameplan so I can’t talk too much about it,” St. Pierre commented about what Florian will bring into the fight against Penn. “It basically consists of using his strength and putting it against his opponent’s weaknesses.”

First off, GSP needs to worry about Thiago Alves first. Second of all, this is the best news that I have heard in weeks. It seems like Georges has a legit dislike for B.J. Penn, and since I have an extreme dislike for B.J.’s number one fan, it’s good to hear that my favorite fighter is helping Kenny Florian win. I’ve stood by Florian all along, and I can’t help but think that the stars may be aligning for a title change in Philly.
