WEC 47: Ratings Are The Second-Worst In Nearly Two Years...

I wrote before the event that was a very important card in the history of the WEC. They needed to put up a strong number to show that there was interest in the pay-per-view that they are putting on next month.

Yea…not so much. According to MMAJunkie, this was the second-worst rating that the promotion has done on Versus in nearly two full years.

WEC 47 (Bowles vs. Cruz): 373,000 viewers
WEC 46 (Varner vs. Henderson): 640,000
WEC 45 (Cerrone vs. Ratciff): 330,000
WEC 44 (Brown vs. Aldo): 414,000
WEC 43 (Cerrone vs. Henderson): 419,000 (first event after loss of DirecTV viewers)

Why did this happen? Well, the event did certainly lack some pop. The only real star on the card was Miguel Torres, and he was coming off a pretty embarrassing knockout loss. The main event was between two bantamweights that only the real MMA fan would know. Bowles was coming off a win, but hadn’t fought in more than six months. Cruz has only one loss, but doesn’t have a resume that screams superstar.

However, I bring you another possibility. This card was on a Saturday night. While me and you may block some prime weekend time for the WEC, Joe Average is out at the bar getting crunk at that time. He might stop for a UFC, but not for it’s awkward little brother.

Well, can the WEC draw on a PPV if they can’t draw on cable on a Saturday night? We’ll see. This next card coming up has a TON of star power on it. The featherweight triumvirate of Urijah Faber, Mike Brown and Jose Aldo are all in action. Donald Cerrone and Ben “Pootie Tang” Henderson go at it in a repeat of WEC’s 2009 fight of the year. Not to mention the possible inclusion of hot prospect Chan Sung Jung, who is best known as “The Korean Zombie. Mmmm…Brains.

Should we assume that the WEC is screwed next month? No, not quite. However, this can’t be good news for Reed Harris and the boys.

UFC 110: Undercard Predictions!

Elvis Sinosic (8-11-2) vs. Chris Haseman (20-16)

The Fighters: Move along nothing to see here.  No, seriously.  This is the “hey let’s find two Australian dudes” and have them fight.  Sinosic isn’t very good as his losing record would indicate.  The UFC seems to love the King Of Rock and Rumble as this is will be his 9th fight, 1-7, in the UFC.  They must think he has a cool nickname.

Haseman, 40 years young, is also…well Australian.  He’s 0-1 in the UFC and has lost his last 5 fights.  This will be his first return to action in almost two years.

Breakdown: These two met once before and Haseman won by the dreaded submission “chin to eye.”  Of course that fight happened in 1997. Haseman/Sinosic II won’t exactly have the drama of Couture/Coleman but if nothing else we get to hear a whole lot of “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie Oy Oy Oy.”

Prediction: Haseman Via Chin To Eye Round 1

Stephan Bonnar (11-6) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (18-9-1)

The Fighters: Is this a “loser leaves town match?”  [Side Note: Can we just officially start hyping these matches as such?  We have number one contender matches, why can't we have the opposite?  Joe Rogan can even pull his best Jeff Probst and kick the loser out of the cage in lieu of a post fight interview.]  Stephan Bonnar has earned a lot of good will with the UFC but it might be running out.  Seriously speaking, the UFC wouldn’t exist as currently constructed without the contributions of Bonnar and Forrest Griffin, and since that fateful day in April 2005 their careers have gone in opposite directions.  Griffin went on to win a title and Bonnar has been suspended for horse steroids and has lost 4 of his last 6 fights, including two in a row.  While Bonnar has become a more refined fighter, his skills haven’t really evolved in the past five years.  He’s still a mediocre striker, with questionable cardio, less than stellar wrestling and decent jiu-jitsu.  His last loss was to Mark Coleman in a fight in which Bonnar got bullied.  To say it was an embarrassing performance would be an understatement.

Soszynski entered his season of The Ultimate Fighter as one of the more experienced contestants.  The former IFL veteran has racked up a 3-1 record in the UFC and is coming off his first UFC loss.  Soszynski is a very big and strong light heavyweight who has found a knack for winning by submission (two of his UFC wins have earned him submission of the night.)

Breakdown: This is a fight that seems to break down perfectly for Soszynski to win.  Everything Bonnar does well Sosznyski does better.  Bonnars best hope might be to turn this fight into a brawl, ala Griffin/Bonnar I.  In his last fight, against Brandon Vera, Soszynski looked hesitant when he got tagged and never seemed to want to engage.  Forcing him into the pocket is the way to go.

Prediction: Sosznyski Via Unanimous Decision.

Chris Lytle (27-17-5) vs. Brian Foster (13-4)

The Fighters: Lytle is The Ultimate Gatekeeper at this point.  Don’t let the veteran Lytle’s UFC record fool you.  He’s a very well rounded fighter who always is a challenging fight.  In fact, Lytle’s last 3 UFC fights have been awarded Fight Of The Night honors.  Lytle will never be a title contender but he certainly has an important role in developing young talent.  Get past Lytle and it’s time for the big boys.

Foster is replacing Dong Hyun-Kim, who had to pull out of the fight due to injury.  Foster put himself on the map with impressive performances against Rick Story and Brock Larson.  In the Larson fight he received two illegal blows in the first round and came back to win.

Breakdown: We can expect fireworks here as both guys aren’t afraid to stand and bang.  Fosters edge may be on the mat but don’t expect Lytle to let it come to that.  At the end of the day Foster won’t be ready for a fighter the caliber of Lytle, when the brawling ends and the boxing begins Foster will be out of his league.

Prediction: Lytle KO Round 2

Goran Reljic (8-0) vs. C.B. Dollaway (9-2)

The Fighters: And the award for “fight I am randomly super excited for” goes to…Goran Reljic and The Doberman?

Reljic is one of the top prospects at 185 pounds.  The exciting 25 year old made his debut at UFC 84 and took out Wilson Gouveia in impressive fashion.  He mixed in punches and devastating kicks before eventually knocking out the veteran fighter.  Now moving down to middleweight for the first time Reljic hopes to quickly move up the ladder.  Reljics striking skills were on display in the octagon but don’t doubt his BJJ credentials.  Reljic is a BJJ Brown-Belt and in 2007 he swept the European Gracie Jiu-Jitsu championships.

Dollaway in a lot of ways is similar to Melvin Guillard.  Dollaway has an insane amount of talent but always seems to find a way to put his neck on the line, literally.  He got caught in an arm-bar, twice, against Amir Sadollah and got caught in a guillotine choke against Tom Lawlor (and almost caught by Mike Massenzio.)  Dollaway’s strength is his All-American wrestling background.  He trains with a great camp at Arizona Combat Sports that includes up and comers like Ryan Bader and Aaron Simpson.

Breakdown: Reljc will have a significant advantage while the fight is on the feet.   On the other hand Dollaway’s wrestling is good enough to the point where he should be able to get the fight to the ground at will.  The real question is whether or not Dollaway has learned from his mistakes and learned enough jiu-jitsu defense to remain out of harms way.  Something tells me he hasn’t.

Prediction: Reljic Via Triangle Choke Round 2.

Igor Pokrajac (21-6) vs. James Te Huna (12-4)

The Fighters: Pokrajac is a Cro-Cop disciple. While you would expect head-kicks from anyone on the Cro-Cop Squad, Pokrajac relies on his wrestling and submission skills. Pokrajac is 21-6 and 0-1 in the UFC. His one UFC loss was a decisive decision loss to Vladimir Matyushenko.

Huna is a Australian, shocker I know, fighter making his UFC debut. Huna relies on his Thai Boxing and wrestling skills. According to some publications he was considered the #1 Light Heavyweight fighter in all of Australia and New Zealand.

Breakdown: While these guys have a combined 43 fights between them most have been against local competition. In fact looking at Pokrajac’s record his 21 wins is clearly inflated by fighting lesser European competition. Every time he’s taken a step up in competition; Ausserio Silva, Mamed Khalidov and Vladimir Matyushenko he’s lost handily. One can come to the hypothesis that the only reason Pokrajac is still on the roster is because of his association to Cro-Cop. Look for the hometown fighter, Huna, to stifle Pokrajac’s take-downs en route to a K.O. win.

Prediction: Huna Via K.O Round 2

Report: UFC to Merge With WEC in 2010…

This has been a rumor for a while, but someone finally went ahead and put pen to paper with a few details. The source is Brazilian source TATAME.com, which is not exactly the New York Times, but they seem convinced. So, we put the word report in front of it let you figure it out.

Biggest MMA event of the planet, UFC has plans even bigger to 2010. Sources close to WEC informed TATAME.com that the UFC will add new weights categories on the next year, bringing athletes with contract with WEC, that was bought by Zuffa – same organization that commands the UFC – in 2006.

This year, UFC scheduled 20 events – WEC made only eight –, but the bigger amount of athletes would force the organization to make a bigger number of annual shows. According to sources close to the event, Zuffa called all the fighters with contract with WEC in Las Vegas earlier this month, telling about the merger and revealing that they plan three events for month in the future.

Jason has discussed this plenty of times before. With all the injury woes that the UFC is suffering, how nice would it be to put Urijah Faber and his wonderful golden locks on Pay-per-view and not have to worry about it? Well, it looks like that may be a possibility.

One of my biggest concerns about this is the employment status of WEC general manager Reed Harris. Harris has done a really wonderful creating something out of nothing with his brand, and even since Zuffa took over, he was resided over some of the best fight cards in the world. What would his prize for that be? Severence pay? That doesn’t seem right.

However, it is the right move. While the cable deal they have in place with Versus is great, it isn’t the same type of money that pay-per-view can pull in.

It’s not a question of if a featherweight fight will headline a UFC PPV, it’s a question of when. My guess is that it’s by the time we see Brown-Faber III.

Iverson Is Already Pissed, No One Is Suprised

So remember on September 9th, when I posted on this very site, that Allen Iverson was going to Memphis? I questioned just how long it would take for him to become angry with his role on a young team and well, last night marked the Answer’s first outburst. After playing in his first game of the season due to a hamstring injury, Iverson scored 11 points in just 18 minutes in the team’s overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings last night. According to NBA Fanhouse, this is what AI had to say post-game.

“I had no problems (with the hamstring). I had a problem with my butt from sitting on that bench so long. That’s the only thing I got a problem with.”

“Yeah I’ll be disappointed if I’m a sub this season. I’m not a reserve basketball player. I’ve never been a reserve all my life and I’m not going to start looking at myself as a reserve…To answer the question, “No, I’m not a bench player. I’m not a sixth man. Go look at my resume and that will show you I’m not a sixth man.”

Iverson needs to take a long hard look at guys around the league like Manu Ginobili, Ben Gordon, and Lamar Odom, guys who are more talented than he is at their stages in their career, yet embrace their sixth man role and do what is asked of them. Manu and Lamar have helped their teams win titles while Gordon has helped the Bulls reach the playoffs and almost pull of a first round upset over the Celts.

Looks like Iverson should have gone to the Charlotte Bobcats this season. That 79.8 points per game total they have notched so far is mightly woeful right now. And also, hasn’t Larry Brown heard this same crap before?

Urijah Faber Back In The Cage At WEC 46…

YES! The best looking man in MMA, Urijah Faber, is finally back from his two broken hands and will be fighting Raphael Assuncao at WEC 46 in January. Some people were suggesting that he wouldn’t be back in the cage until March, but never count out “The California Kid.” MMA Weekly broke the news.

The long-awaited return of World Extreme Cagefighting fan favorite Urijah Faber is now set.

MMAWeekly.com sources on Thursday confirmed that Faber would return at WEC 46 on Jan. 10 to face fellow featherweight contender Raphael Assuncao. They have verbally agreed to fight when the promotion returns to Faber’s backyard of Sacramento, Calif., at the ARCO Arena.

Faber (22-3) last fought in a loss to current 145-pound champion Mike Brown at WEC 41 in June, also in Sacramento. He fractured his right hand in the bout and has spent the past few months healing.

“That would be perfect timing for me,” Faber told MMAWeekly.com earlier this month when asked about a January return.

Faber is stuck in one of the weirdest situations in MMA. He lost his first fight with Mike Brown because he was being stupid and threw a spinning back elbow against a damn good fighter. Then, after beating Jens Pulver before getting a rematch, he broke one hand and seriously hurt his other during the fight. Even with that, he was to land some funky elbows, and held Mike Thomas Brown to a somewhat unimpressive victory.

Now, people are still calling Faber one of the best featherweight fighters in the world, which is not something that you would normally say about a guy who has lost two out of his last three fights. I think that he needs two fights before getting back to Brown, and he’ll get his first win against a fighter that just isn’t in the same class.
