Overeem v. Rogers In Non-Title Fight…

Welcome to Strikeforce news day. We already touched on Fedor, so let’s move onto the guy who actually holds the belt that Fedor doesn’t seem to care too much about.

Alistiar Overeem hasn’t fought in America in since 2007. People have been calling for his head for a number of reasons, including steroid accusations. Now, he will finally make his return to Strikeforce against Brett Rogers.

In a non-title fight. Here’s the news from MMA Junkie:

“The Strikeforce heavyweight champion said he is likely to meet Brett Rogers (10-1 MMA, 2-1 SF) in a non-title fight on an as-yet-unannounced card set for May 15 in St. Louis, Mo.”

Rumored card so far:
- Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum
- Alistair Overeem vs. Brett Rogers
- Andrei Arlovski vs. Antonio Silva

Now, after all the time we’ve spent criticizing Overeem, he is finally coming back. However, how much longer is this guy going to hold this belt and not have to defend it? It’s becoming a joke at this point.

Overeem is an excellent kickboxer, and thanks to the Mark McGuire workout plan, he’s added a ton of weight in the last few years. However, Rogers is a natural 265 and holds a ton of power in his hands. In the fight against Fedor, Rogers showed more than anyone thought he had on the ground and he showed he understood position and used it effectively.

Neither of these guys want to be on the floor, so we’ll see some fireworks. Don’t be shocked if Rogers upsets the Dutchman.

Bowl Mania Day One

I’m back for redemption. It all started about a year or so ago in the WCWP break room. Fellow WCWP host and website contributor Matt Soldano challenged me. “Jordan”, he said “how do you think you would do if you picked every college bowl game?” I told him I thought I’d do quite well. We decided that I would pick every game and put the picks on the website.

Unfortunately, I finished 17-17. Soldano has reminded me of this fact on almost a weekly basis since. So, I’m back for another round. As he puts it, 17-17 is the definition of mediocrity. I know I’m better then that. He knows I’m better then that. Here begins year number two of this experiment.

It’s Bowl Mania ‘09

New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State vs Wyoming
– Fresno State finished the year 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the WAC. After loosing three of their first four games, the Bulldogs won seven of their final eight. This team can score. They’ve failed to put up thirty points only twice this season. Quarterback Ryan Colburn threw for over 2000 yards and 18 touchdowns this season.

Trivia question: Who led the nation in rushing yards per game this season? Was it Heisman winner Mark Ingram? Standford’s Toby Gerhart? Nope, it was Fresno State’s Ryan Matthews. Matthews averaged over 150 yards per game while totaling over 1,600 and 17 touchdowns. Against Boise State, Matthews ran for 235 yards and had at least 150 in three others. Expect Matthews to have a field day against Wyoming. The Cowboys gave up over 160 rushing yards in their season ending victory over Colorado State. Against TCU, over 300 rushing yards were yielded.

Although the Fresno State defense can get torched, allowing over 50 points three times this season, I don’t think that’ll happen today.

In fact, this game has blowout written all over it. Wyoming finished 6-6 and 4-4 in the Mountain West. They scored nearly half the points that Fresno State did this year and gave up nearly just as many. Ryan Matthews had more yards himself this season then Wyoming did as a team. Cowboys quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels had a 7 to 4 touchdown-interception ratio. That’s not good. The more you crunch the numbers, the harder it is to see how this game is competitive, much less whether or not Wyoming has a shot.

The Pick: Fresno State

St Petersburg Bowl: UCF vs Rutgers – Give Rutgers a ton of credit. They could have given up. They could have laid down. But they didn’t. 2009 could not have started much worse for the Scarlet Knights. They looked awful in a 47-15 loss to Cincinnati at home. Sure, knowing what we know now about the Bearcats, that loss doesn’t seam unreasonable, but to look that uninspired in your home opener on Labor Day waved a ton of red flags.

I crushed Schiano and his staff on the radio that week and had to eat my words a few weeks later. Besides a perplexing loss to a bad Syracuse team, Rutgers had itself a decent year. They finished 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the Big East.

They had a shot against Pittsburgh in mid-October and knocked off South Florida 31-0 when South Florida was ranked 24th in the nation. West Virginia needed a few big stops to hold the Scarlet Knights off in the final game of the year.

Watch out for running back Joe Martinek. Martinek finished with over 900 yards this season, including four games with over 120. Against South Florida, he ran for 128 and one touchdown.

UCF matches up well with Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have a little better statistical defense, but the offenses are evenly matched. UCF has won there last three games, including a 37-32 win over Houston when Houston was ranked 15. Two of their four losses came against teams ranked in the top ten at the time (Texas at 2 and Miami at 9). Rutgers will have to stop running back Brynn Harvey. Harvey racked up over 1000 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. Rutgers had trouble against strong rushing attacks this year. They gave up 162 yard on the ground to West Virginia and 223 to Pittsburgh (including 180 to Dion Lewis). UCF quarterback Brett Hodges passed for over 2000 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. He also threw 11 interceptions.

I like Rutgers in one of the better pre-Christmas bowl matchups. They have a better defense and will force Brett Hodges to make plays. When that happens, I’m leery of the rough touchdown to interception ratio Hodges has. If this game comes down to turnovers, I like Rutgers a little better.

The Pick: Rutgers

UFC 107: B.J. Penn Cage Fighter Walkout Shirt

The politics of the walk-out shirt continue. Back in November, RVCA sponsored the world’s best heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko for his fight against Brett Rogers. That was more than enough reason for Zuffa to ban RVCA from the octagon. That screwed B.J. Penn because he has a whole line of RVCA shirts and shorts already on sale.

Now, he is aligned with the people from Cage Fighter and they bring you this shirt that B.J. will wear to the cage at 107:

B.J. continues to pimp his website at every turn, which as a website owner, I can appreciate. The shirt also has the blood splatter patten that seems to call to BJ licking the blood off his gloves after every fight.

MMA Warehouse has your hookup for 24.99, continuing the new trend of cheaper MMA shirts.

Live in cold weather? The Longsleeve version is 29.99.

PFT: Tebow Won’t Slip Past First Round…

With teams beginning to be eliminated from playoff contention, it’s time to start looking forward to the off season. We’re having a pow-wow soon to decide what special features we’ll be hooking up this year, but for now, let’s start with this little tidbit from Pro Football Talk:

NBC’s Peter King reported during Football Night in America that he has spoken to 17 coaches and personnel executives over the past month, and that he has asked for predictions as to the precise spot at which Florida quarterback Tim Tebow will be drafted.

The average draft position? 33rd overall.

But King added that two coaches of “winning teams” said Tebow won’t get past their selections in round one.

Mike Florio goes on to mention his guesses of Jacksonville and Minnesota as the two teams. Jacksonville has been linked to Tebow purely for name value. They can’t seem to sell seats in northern Florida, and there is no bigger name down in college football country than Tebow.

As for Minnesota, I just can’t see it. Assume that we get one more year of Brett Favre just having fun out there, they still have an incredibly young, raw passer on the bench in Tavaris Jackson. To add another project in Tebow, that wouldn’t really make a whole lot of sense.

My guess? Someone wants to use him at another position. Where? I have no idea.

Cutler Throws Five Picks, But Is Still Defended?

People in the public don’t necessarily get something about media types. They make analyses, and sometimes they don’t move off them for far too long. I’m guilty of it, I can openly admit that. I always seem to look at the chargers roster and think that they can overcome Norv Turner’s terrible coaching. I look a team like the Jags and wonder why they are as bad as they are. People always tell me I defend Eli too much, but I don’t think they get that I don’t hate people who criticize him, but that I hate the WAY that they criticize him. Comparing him to Rivers and his brother, and talking about who the Chargers drafted with the traded picks, when none of that really matters as much as the incredibly successful Giants product that his been on the field since he got there.

However, There is a few guys that I never understood why they were defended as often as they are. One, of course, is Brett Favre. The other was actually compared to him tonight. Here’s some various Media Tweets about Jay Cutler from tonight’s 49er game:

Jay cutler has 4 picks..but one…maybe two his fault. Hester killing him 2nite

SI_PeterKing 1 hour ago
Cutler reminds me of the Favre who made Holmgren tear his hair out in that 24-pick ‘93 season. You know he’s good, but the INTs just flow.

To be completely fair, Peter King went on to criticize Cutler later in the night, but I just can’t understand how people can defend this guy. He has 17 picks through nine games. I don’t care if you throw 30 touchdowns, if you throw that many interceptions, your team is going to hurt because of it. It’s a lot like the Pure Point Rating stat in basketball. People need to start seeing that while throwing the TD is great, it’s not as important as NOT throwing the interception.

As for Trey Wingo saying that two of the picks were Hester’s fault, I just don’t about that. I know there was one where the receiver fell, and that’s fine. I can get that, and that’s why if a QB has a TD-INT ratio within two or three of even, I could get saying that a few weren’t his fault. That’s fine.

However, I just didn’t see another one that wasn’t on Cutler. I’m gonna watch the game again, and If I find that he’s right, I’ll admit it, but watching the game live, I just didn’t see receivers helping the INTs.

I think people love the idea of Jay Cutler. They like the guy that is going to take all those chances and make some great plays. They hate boring. They would rather see a guy go up in flames than to play an efficient, but unspectacular game and win. That’s why people hate it when bring up the fact that Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. He may not have been Peyton Manning, but he was efficient and didn’t turn it over. People hate efficient.

However, that’s how games are won. The team with less turnovers wins an absurd percentage of the time. There is a reason for that. Clearly one that Jay Cutler doesn’t get.

That being said, I’m sure that there is a chance that Cutler throws seven TDs next week and I’ll still find a way to kill him.

Stupid Media.

First Video of EA Sports MMA!

After playing UFC Undisputed 2009 for roughly six million hours, It turned out as a great first effort from THQ, but ultimately somewhat of a flawed experience. Everyone who plays online and hugs the right stick, I’m talking to you, asshole.

Anyone, EA is getting in the cage and showed the first video of their effort right before Fedor ate Brett Rogers soul on Saturday Night.

Check it out.
