James Toney Signs With The UFC; Is Dana A Hypocrite?

The war has been raging on for quite sometime. To boxing fans, there are two kinds of people. There are fight fans, and then there are those idiots that watch two gay dudes roll around on a mat for fifteen minutes and call it fighting.

To us with half a brain, we realize that boxing is an integral part of MMA, and one that has gotten people far in the sport. Well, another Boxer is trying to make the crossover to the octagon, and for once, Dana White and the boys are biting. Today, they signed James Toney to a multi-fight deal, according to Mike Chiapetta of MMA Fighting.com:

After a long period of off-again, on-again courtship, the UFC has pulled the trigger and signed 41-year-old boxing champion James Toney.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the signing to MMA Fighting after it was first reported by FiveOuncesofPain.com.

Toney had actively campaigned for a contract from the UFC, following White around the country to several events and eventually meeting with him in Las Vegas. Toney reportedly turned down at least one contract offer before signing.

Asked when Toney would debut, White said he had “no idea.”

So, Dana White has repeatedly thrown mud towards Strikeforce for the idea of the “freak show” fight. He killed the Herschel Walker fight, and there are those that say that this is the same thing. Toney is out of his prime, seemingly out of shape, and lacks any sort of well-rounded game. He will stand in the middle of the cage and throw bombs, believing that he can knockout just about anyone out. Until he gets in the cage against a wrestler than puts him through the mat.

More than that, this whole courtship has had a bit of a carnival feel to it. From Toney following the UFC around the country, to his rants that you can’t understand, like this one:

Toney has seemingly “publicized” his way into the world’s largest MMA organization.

Is Dana wrong for this signing? Probably not. It’s not like Toney is a professional dancer wanting to fight without proper training. He is a professional boxer and what he lacks on the ground he will inevitably make up for with crisp standup. The problem will be remaining on his feet. Which I don’t believe he can do.

Look for Toney to be 1-2 and out of the UFC sooner than later. If they do keep him, it will be to market the brand to boxing fans.

Side note: Does anyone else really hope that James Toney does one of those videos calling me out and threatening to kick my ass? That would really make my day.

Koscheck/Daley Likely?

Paul Daley is in a bunch of trouble. I wrote already that he wouldn’t stand much of a chance against either Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck. While Daley wanted to fight Thiago Alves, Dana White had made it clear that it would be Fitch or Koscheck.

The reason why became more clear today when Fitch and Alves were put together to fight at UFC 111. Now, by some simple math and the process of elimination, Daley and Koscheck will likely be matched up. This one comes to us courtesy the dude with the coolest job at ESPN, Jon Anik.

Any word on when Kos is returning and who he is expected to fight?

Jon Anik: “Reports are it could be Paul Daley in May or June. Trying to confirm.”

Well, it didn’t take much of a brain surgeon to figure that it was going to happen, but that doesn’t put Daley is trouble any less. His only hope is a Paulo Thiago type knockout.

Roethlisberger Out For Sunday?

Wow. How horrible could this be for the Steelers if it’s true? Paging Dennis Dixon anyone? From PFT:

Despite several days of optimism regarding the availability of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for Sunday night’s game against the Ravens, Roethlisberger will not play, according to Jay Glazer of FOX, via Twitter.

Glazer reports that Roethlisberger has been suffering from exercise-induced headaches. Thus, the team has decided to shut him down.

For those who don’t know, Charlie Batch is also out for the game, so the defending champs will be going with Dennis Dixon at quarterback.

Pittsburgh is 6-4, and in second place in an extremely tough AFC North. Baltimore is just a game behind them, and the Bengals are in the driver’s seat at 7-3.

There is a bigger issue here than just this game though. Roethlisberger is starting to profile like Steve Young or Troy Aikman. He’s had so many concussions over the last few years that people have to start being concerned for the health of his brain. As good as Ben is, he is going to have to shut it down at a very young age if this continues.

As much as this may hurt the Steelers this week, it’s the right call.

Chuck Liddell To Appear On Dancing With The Stars….I’m Serious.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I couldn’t make this stuff up If I tried. The Iceman Chuck Liddell will take palce on one of my parents favorite reality shows. I have never felt older in my entire life. Here’s the clip from MMA Weekly:

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell may or may not be done fighting, but one thing is for sure, he isn’t done competing. The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday announced that “The Iceman” will transfer his steely demeanor from the Octagon to the ballroom, when he joins the upcoming season of ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.”

Liddell will become the first mixed martial artist to compete on the series on Sept. 21, when the new season starts. He joins other notable celebrities, including Ozzy Osbourne’s daughter Kelly Osbourne, Donny Osmond, former supermodel Kathy Ireland, former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin, professional snowboarder Louie Vito, singer Macy Gray, and others.

“I want to win,” Liddell told UFC.com, his motives clear. “I don’t like losing in anything, so I’ll work as hard as they’ll let me.”

Liddell went on to talk about being an positive ambassador for the sport, which is a good thing, because god knows we have enough bad ones (Looking at you Brock.) However, I can’t help my tiny little brain from thinking this is some kind of money grab. While Chuck did live through the beginning days of the UFC where fighters made peanuts, he also was one of the first to be making any real bank. Hell, by the end of his career he was making something like 250,000 per fight.

Let’s just hope Chuck doesn’t overhand right any of the judges in the face. Michael Irvin might need it though…

Shaq + Lebron = My Brain Just Exploded…

I’ve been saying for weeks that the Cavs have absolutely no one to blame but themselves for pissing off their franchise player. They got him no help whatsoever over the first few years of his career. They passed up a trade for the Diesel last year because they wanted to hold on the Wally Szerbiack. Really?

Now, it appears, after years of being clueless, the Cavs have finally realized that they are running out of chances to get their championship ring. After all, the summer of 2010 is only a year away.

So, now with The Big Aristotle and everyone’s favorite Twitter friend on his side, Can LeBron win the title? I think a better question is: Could to the two of them have stopped Hitler’s armies in their tracks in 1939 and prevented all of World War II? Of course, they could win a title. And they probably could have stopped a Panzer tank too. Look at those arms.

Everyone (looking at you, Matt Soldano) who says that there is no way that Shaq can do next year what he did this year are right. However, who out there actually thinks he has to? LeBron led the Cavs to 66 wins surronded by a guy with a mop for hair and a guy who’s only redeeming quality is that his name starts with a Z. With Shaq there to clog the middle and do some rebounding, LeBron will be more free than ever to drive the lane and dunk the ball on dudes heads.

As far as I’m concerned, this makes this team the best in the league. Pencil in another Magic-Cavs Semis this year, and you might as well put Lebron and Shaq in the finals now.

Game. Shaqtus.
