Is The UFC Loading Up The Abu Dhabi Card?

Okay. Let me get this straight. On the same day that B.J. Penn says that his next fight is going to be on the UFC 112 card in Abu Dhabi, Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort is rumored to be on that same date?

Weird.

While the UFC is introducing their brand to the middle eastern audience, it seems weird that they would choose to defend two belts on the same night. Silva and Penn are two of the biggest draws that the UFC has in their pockets. I know for a fact that there are a ton of people out there who are excited to see The Spider pushed by a fighter who is at least close to his level. Is Vitor close to Silva’s level? Who knows? At the very least, I’m excited to find out.

As for Penn, there is a bit of a question about which weight class this fight will be in. If it’s going to be in April, then it could be a title defense. Assuming that the top two lightweights in contention right now are Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, it would give both of them a chance to train for the fight. Edgar is coming off a defeat of decent prospect Matt Veach, and Gray Maynard will fight this Monday against Nate Diaz. Assuming Maynard beats Diaz, then he would have more than two full months to train. Edgar last fought in December, so he even has a head start.

The other option is B.J. fighting at welterweight. It’s not that crazy to think. While Dana might have said that he needs to clean out the division, and that would take another win, it wouldn’t be that nuts to see him fight a top ten welterweight in an attempt to put together a massive show for their first trek into a new territory.

I’m not a fan of loading cards up like this. Look at last July and UFC 100. Sure, that was an awesome card. However, what happened after that? UFC 101 was headlined by B.J. Penn, and that is fine. However, 102 was Couture and Nog, which while it was an awesome fight, isn’t the strongest main event. They sold that card on the fact that Couture would be fighting in his home area of Portland. At UFC 103, Vitor Belfort defeated Rich Franklin. There needs to be an understanding about Franklin. America loves him, but he is just not a main event draw. A ton of people pointed at the Mayweather fight that night as the reason why the card barely drew, but I beleive that it’s more because Franklin just isn’t really a draw.

The next few cards suffered because of UFC 100. How much better would it look if the UFC held off GSP v. Alves til UFC 101, and had B.J. fight at UFC 102?

Couture and Big Nog could have been an awesome semi-main at either of those cards. Remember what the semi-main of 102 was? The wonderful Thiago Silva knockout of Keith Jardine from the “I saw that coming” file. Hell, even if they would have kept that and moved Franklin down to Semi-main, the cards would have looked better.

So, after all those words, let me say this. The source on Silva and Belfort is TATAME, which is a brazillian source. Let’s just say it’s not the New York Times. While it might be true, there is a chance that it’s not.

While it might seem incredible to look at a card like this and say “Sick, I’m so ordering that!” it’s just not good business for the month-to-month plan.

Penn’s Trainer: GSP is Juicing…

Here we go again with the excuses. Here’s what Penn’s boxing trainer Rudy Valentino had to say in an interview with SI’s Josh Gross:

“I think it’s because of his so-called steroid use, and all of that, that B.J. felt it was an unfair fight. Just the whole thing about not being fair, and fighting fair, you know. That’s what B.J. wants to get off of his back; The greasing stuff, the steroids, and all of that”.

“We heard from certain people that used to train with him, telling us what he did in the past. That’s why, we had a heads up on that. When you cycle steroids, you’re not going to test positive. You can cycle it right up to the time of the fight and not test positive on that. That’s what we suspected he did in this fight”.

Or here’s the other crazy option: The dude is huge and much much bigger than Penn. That’s why he was able to take the Hawaiian down so easily.

Until we have proof, I don’t want to hear about anyone in MMA being on steroids anymore. Are there probably some people who are? Absolutely. However, unless people are willing to give them up, or they fail a drug test, we can’t go around pointing fingers.

B.J. Penn Limited Edition RVCA Shirt

With B.J.’s dominating victory over Diego Sanchez, there is no doubt that he is a top pound for pound fighter. He completely controlled the guy that a lot of people thought was the number two lightweight in the world. I don’t have that amount of respect for Sanchez, but there is no doubt that you absolutely must respect Penn.

Penn is so good, that he gets his own limited edition special shirt!

The artwork is done by artist Phil Frost, who is like, a real artist. It’s the first B.J. Penn shirt that I actually like. It’s got a cool, unique set of colors on it and the graphic is cool, even if I have no idea what the hell it is.

MMA Warehouse has this limited edition for 31.99.

UFC 107: Stock Watch!

Stock Up

  • Kenny Florian – Wow. That didn’t even look like the same guy that fought B.J. Penn. The thing that I was most impressed with wasn’t the elbow that cut Guida, or the punch that finished him. It was the takedown defense that stuffed three of “The Carpenter’s” takedowns. Florian was aggressive and smart, and really improved his game.
  • Mike Pierce – Well done. He may not have won, but he stood in there with Jon Fitch. He showed good boxing for a guy who is just picking it up. Like Joe Rogan said, his future may be at 155, but I was really impressed by his performance.
  • Frank Mir – So, think Frank Mir put all the doubters away? He showed great boxing and finished the choke in a position that shouldn’t work. As soon as he won, Twitter blew up wanting Mir to fight Lesnar all over again. Could Mir beat Lesnar now that he is at 265? Maybe…
  • B.J. Penn – What can you say? Penn is just in a different world than everyone else at 155. I don’t even have words for how impressive he was. Boxing, wrestling, and a kick that made me wince. Just wow.

Stock Down

  • Clay Guida – 5-5. Guida is a fan favorite, he’s a fun personality, and he is an overachiever, but how much longer can he stay around if he continues to fight at a .500 clip? Guida really needs to improve his standup if he wants to become a championship level fighter. If he doesn’t, not even Greg Jackson can save him.
  • Jon Fitch – We walked into this fight talking about Fitch being a pound-for-pound top ten guy. Now, what do we have to say about a guy who went to decision with Mike Pierce? I know that Fitch always goes to decision, but he was roughed up a little bit in that fight. He needs to bounce back strong in his next fight.
  • Diego Sanchez -  Besides making a bunch of “NO!” jokes, you saw the truth of the whole situation: B.J. is just light years away from everyone at 155. He tried to stand, and Penn countered every single time. He tried to get takedowns, and B.J. sprawled every single time. What was left? To just go down, and Sanchez did.

UFC 107: B.J. Penn Cage Fighter Walkout Shirt

The politics of the walk-out shirt continue. Back in November, RVCA sponsored the world’s best heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko for his fight against Brett Rogers. That was more than enough reason for Zuffa to ban RVCA from the octagon. That screwed B.J. Penn because he has a whole line of RVCA shirts and shorts already on sale.

Now, he is aligned with the people from Cage Fighter and they bring you this shirt that B.J. will wear to the cage at 107:

B.J. continues to pimp his website at every turn, which as a website owner, I can appreciate. The shirt also has the blood splatter patten that seems to call to BJ licking the blood off his gloves after every fight.

MMA Warehouse has your hookup for 24.99, continuing the new trend of cheaper MMA shirts.

Live in cold weather? The Longsleeve version is 29.99.
