MMA Is Now Legal In Massachusetts!

Rejoice, MMA faithful. The 41st state has legalized our ever growing sport.

Here’s the news from MMA Weekly:

The UFC’s trip to Massachusetts is inked.

On Monday, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law “An Act Regulating The Sport Of Mixed Martial Arts,” legally opening the door for MMA in the Commonwealth.

Since 2005, the sport existed in a legal gray area where it was not technically illegal, but was not formally regulated by the Massachusetts Boxing Commission, which had previously overseen events. In their absence, local promoters acted as the commission, hiring ring officials and personnel.

The act gives control of MMA fights to the Department of Public Safety, according to a UFC release.

UFC president Dana White, a onetime Boston resident, was overjoyed with the news.

“I am so excited words cannot describe,” he wrote via his official Twitter account. “Here we come Boston! NY is next!!”

The act was the second MMA bill introduced to Massachusetts lawmakers, but the first to make it to the governor’s desk. An earlier version of the bill introduced last year died in the senate when time constraints forced its shelving.

Jason has been pumped for a potential UFC in Fenway Park for some time now. Personally, I’m just happy for the fact that we are one step closer to MMA in New York. I would literally kill a man to get tickets for UFC 120 at Madison Square Garden.

Excuse me, I have to go. The FBI is at my door regarding that last sentence.

Donnie Swings and Misses: Revisiting June’s Draft

Despite the 2009-10 NBA Season being a week old, I have come to the decision that Donnie Walsh blew it in June’s Draft when he had the number eight overall pick. I understand that Walsh had his hands tied when Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio were already picked but I still cannot come to terms as to why Donnie Walsh believed that with their lottery pick Jordan Hill was the best option.

In my mock drafts, specifically leading up to the actual night of, I pegged the Knicks selecting Hill only because of the admiration the organization had for the former Wildcat. It is obvious though that there were two players that Walsh should have selected two guys before the thought of Hill crossed their minds. Ty Lawson and more specifically, Brandon Jennings, fit the Knicks plans and design and unfortunately, Donnie swung and missed…big time.

Hill has played in one game this year and has played a grand total of two minutes. Now no one thought he would come in and be a rookie of the year caliber type of player but no one thought he would be this far behind in terms of getting up to NBA speed and development. Compare those stats to Ty Lawson of the Denver Nuggets who is currently averaging 9 points and 3 assists in a backup role to Chauncey Billups in less than 20 minutes of play. I always thought Lawson would be a guy who could perfectly fit the bill with D’Antoni’s run and gun style. He is averaging a 5:1 Assists/Turnover ratio. That is how you play point guard folks.

Without Blake Griffin, Brandon Jennings has stolen the spotlight for this year’s rookies putting up ridiculous numbers for the Milwaukee Bucks. With a line of 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, Jennings has stolen the show and makes the departure of Ramon Sessions a forgotten thought. While he drew criticisms for leaving Arizona to play in Italy, Jennings has proven the inconsistency shown overseas was all a fluke, and his American game translates much better.

So where does Jordan Hill fit? Mike D’Antoni has already converted Wilson Chandler to the 4 to play similarly to Shawn Marion when D’Antoni was in Phoenix and he has David Lee at center. With Gallo and Al Harrington also being able to play the 3 and the 4, the need for Hill is perplexing. If Donnie Walsh felt there was a pressing need for a big man, why did he not draft Brook Lopez over Gallinari in 2008? Has Gallo proven anything in the NBA besides the fact that 75% of his shots this season have been 3 pointers? If I wanted that, give me Jason Kapono for a fraction of the money and draft Lopez.

The track record for Donnie Walsh’s draft picks have been less than impressive. Here are a list of the first round picks since Walsh began drafting with the Indiana Pacers.

The Good: Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, Al Harrington, Danny Granger,

The Bad: George McCloud, Dale Davis, Travis Best, Erick Dampier, Vonteego Cummings

The Ugly: Malik Sealy, Scott Haskin, Eric Piatkowski, Austin Croshere, Primoz Brezec, Fred Jones, David Harrison, Jonathan Bender, Shawne Williams

The names don’t lie. Walsh has put all of his chips onto the table by acquiring expiring contract after expiring contract. If Walsh is unable to land Lebron James, what will the reaction be then from Knicks fans? With no 2010 first round pick (which would have surely land them in the lottery) when can the Knicks address the point guard situation? Can Toney Douglas actually assume the full-time position next year? Doubt it. All Knicks fans can do now is watch Jordan Hill continually disappoint hopefuls by sitting on the bench while Brandon Jennings continues to soar in Wisconsin. Who knows, maybe he will start to take Packer fans minds off of Brett Favre.

Swick To Take On Hardy At UFC 105…

What a replacement for Dyun-hung Kim. Swick was supposed to take on Martin Kampmann at UFC 103, but instead “The Hitman” was knocked out by Paul Daley who replaced Swick because he was concussed in training. Now, Swick will get a second chance at a number one contender’s fight with Dan Hardy. Last time we saw Dan Hardy, he was eeking out a split decision over Marcus Davis at UFC 99 in Germany. Here’s the story from MMA Weekly:

Following Martin Kampmann’s devastating loss to Paul Daley at UFC 103, fans and critics alike were wondering who could possibly fit the bill to face Mike Swick with the winner gunning for a shot at UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. It looks like that question has been answered in the form of British fighter Dan Hardy, who will face Swick at UFC 105 in England.

Mike Chiappetta of AOL Fanhouse first reported the news on Monday citing UFC president Dana White, and MMAWeekly.com has since confirmed the bout with sources close to the negotiations.

Swick was forced out of his scheduled UFC 103 bout against Kampmann due to a concussion sustained in training, but the American Kickboxing Academy stand out is back to form and chomping at the bit to get in the Octagon.

Currently sitting with an undefeated record as a 170-pound fighter, Swick has looked impressive in his last few bouts, including a dominating performance over Ben Saunders in his last trip out.

The hometown crowd will definitely be behind its countryman, Hardy, at UFC 105 as he hails from Great Britain and has amassed a 3-0 record in the UFC.

I am really excited to watch Swick smash Hardy. To be honest, I just can’t possibly see Hardy winning this fight because his strength is striking, and I’m fairly sure that Swick’s striking is in fact better than Hardy. I full expect Swick to walk and then start preparing for Georges St.Pierre in February.

College Football ‘09: Oklahoma State Cowboys

For the next few weeks our very own Jordan Lauterbach will be previewing the upcoming 2009 College Football season. Each day, he will be posting a new preview so be sure to check in everyday.

Last Season: 9-5, 5-3, Lost to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl

Coaches Poll: 11

Mike Gundy wants to be remembered for something other than his age. The head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys biggest claim to fame does not have anything to do with results on the football field. It has nothing to do with X’s and O’s .

It has everything to do with reading and reacting. Or maybe, more aptly put, reading and over-reacting. We all remember Gundy’s “I’m 40” rant after getting angry at a opinion column in a local newspaper. The comical afternoon put the head coach on the highlight reel, but not for good reason. In fact, mainly for kicks.

But winning is the ultimate fix for a bad reputation and winning is something that the Cowboys hope to do a little bit more of in 2009. However, when you play in the Big 12 South, winning can sometime be extremely difficult.

No one can question the offensive fire power that Oklahoma State has. Quarterback Zac Robinson is the third piece to the trio of deadly Big 12 South signal callers (the others being Colt Mccoy and Sam Bradford, of course). Robinson threw for over 3000 yards last season and 25 touchdowns. Robinson also takes care of the football well, throwing only ten interceptions.

No doubt Robinson is glad to have Dez Bryant back as his top target. Bryant caught 87 passes for over 1400 yards and 19 touchdowns last year. The one concern with Bryant is his health. The receiver had to have knee surgery in the off season after hurting himself in the Holiday Bowl. The passing game was practically unrecognizable after the injury. Zac Robinson completed only 54% of his passes and threw two picks in the loss to Oregon.

If Bryant is not completely healthy, the Cowboys will struggle. Demarcus Connor is listed as Ok. States second receiver. Connor caught only three passes last season. I would worry about the passing game if Bryant shows any effects from the surgery. But assuming that the number one receiver is at full strength, the Cowboys should have no trouble throwing. It’s an air attack that makes opposing secondary coach’s shudder.

Kendrall Hunter is the third major offensive weapon for the Cowboys. Hunter ran for over 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. The benefit of Hunter is obvious. He keeps the defense honest. With a player like him, you have to be thinking run. With a receiver like Bryant, you have to guard against the pass. It’s extremely difficult to defend. Zac Robinson can also be considered a running threat. Robinson ran for over 1,500 yards during his career year.

Last year Oklahoma State’s offense scored 40.8 points a game, ranking ninth in the nation. With the losses and philosophy changes that some of the teams above them have experienced, I would expect this ranking to increase this year.

Assuming that the offense won’t miss a beat, Oklahoma State’s fortunes hinge on the defense.

New defensive coordinator Bill Young is charged with improving a defense that hasn’t ranked higher than 74th in the nation since 2001. But hopes are high because some immense talent exists on the defense. Linebacker Andre Sexton and cornerback Perrish Cox are both studs. Also keep an eye out for linebacker Donald Booker. Booker was named most improved at spring practice.

But the key to the defense is getting pressure on the quarterback. Last season, the Cowboys had only 15 total sacks. The ranked last in the nation. If Bill Young can figure out a way to improve the defense like he did at Kansas, The Cowboys will be very dangerous.

My biggest concern with Oklahoma State is the schedule. On top of playing both Oklahoma and Texas, they also play five others that were ranked in the top 16 in passing yards. If this defense doesn’t get right quickly, Oklahoma State could be looking towards 2010 by mid-october. No matter how good your offense is, if your defense struggles so will you. With very few exceptions. And as good as Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant are, they aren’t the 2008 Texas Tech Red Raider.

That defense needs to play well early for the Cowboys to have any shot.

3 Games to Watch

September 5th- Georgia- It’s an immediate test for the Cowboy offense. While Georgia may have taken a step back offensively with the loss of Matthew Staffortd, that defense is still tough. Despite being at home, this is a tough way to start an absolutely brutal schedule.

October 31st- Texas- Hey Cowboys, try and stop this Texas offense! The Cowboys better hope that Texas goes as the Northwestern Wildcats for Halloween or they could be in a lot of trouble.

November 28th- @ Oklahoma- I’d be shocked if the Cowboys are still in the race at this point for anything more than what Christmas week bowl they will play in, but if they are this one will be absolutely huge. If they still are playing for anything big, this defense will have already shown you that it can flat out play.
