Bowl Mania Day 12

Record: 11-9

Rose Bowl: Ohio State v. Oregon

I’ve mentioned it on the air many times in the last few weeks, but I don’t think I’ve written it here. I was dead wrong about Oregon. Alabama too, but we’ll save that crow for next week. In terms of the amount of good teams, you could make an argument that this was the hardest Pac-10 to win in years. Sure, USC has been one of the premier teams in the country for virtually the entire decade, but when has the Pac-10 had as much depth as it currently does? Maybe it was a direct product of having a bulldozing power house like USC take a year off, but this was the best Pac-10 I’ve seen in a long long time.

Oregon lost the heart of their defense in Tommy Chang and suspended their star running back after the first week of the season. Things looked grim for the Ducks. Then we found out how good LeMichael James and Jeremiah Massoli were. James stepped in for Blount at the running back position and actually made people forget about the pre-season Heisman candidate. James ran for 1476 yards and 14 touchdowns. When Blount was reinstated mid season (I guess all is forgiven when you have a real shot at a title), James remained the feature back. I think that says more about the kid than anything else. You know you’re good when a preseason Heisman trophy candidate can’t steel some of your carries.

I love the way the Ducks use Legarette Blount now. For example, in the defacto Pac-10 championship game against Oregon State, James had 25 carries and Blount had nine. He comes in fresh when the defense is on it’s heals. You cannot ask for anything more, if you’re the Ducks. No one talked about it because Blount only played half the season, but this is the best running back tandem in the country.

…and Ohio State might just be the team to stop them. The Buckeye’s have the number five rush defense in the country. They allowed under 14 points a game in a weak Big 10. But I’m always worried about Ohio State on a big stage in January. If history has taught you anything, it’s don’t pick Ohio State in a BCS game. I’ve done it before and gotten burned and won’t do it this year.

Oregon has too many ways to beat you offensively. Part of me, despite the defense, really thinks that Ohio State was the product of a poor conference and is at the low end of the totem pole when it comes to ranking BCS teams 1 through 10. I mean, after all, they are #8. I don’t think Jim Tressel has figured out how to use his quarterback and that will hurt him on a big stage.

The Pick: Oregon

Sugar Bowl- Florida v Cincinnati

Pat Forde of ESPN.com wrote a fantastic piece on how this could be the final game of the Florida dynasty. Ranked from most to least impact on the program, tonight is-

1. The final game for Tim Tebow

2. The final game for many of these defensive players because of the amount of juniors that are going to head for the pros this year.

3. Many of the coordinators final games before they head for head coaching positions

4. Urban Meyer’s “final game”.

I put the Urban Meyer story last because I sincerely believe that he’ll be back on the sideline game one 2010. If not game one 2010, then absolutely game one 2011. The more the story unravels, the more I think it was a rash decision based on a very unfortunate health situation by Meyer last week. I don’t believe for a second that he ever wanted to quit coaching. I think he was scared by his health issues over the last month and phrased the announcement incorrectly last Saturday.

But regardless, next year is going to be a down year for the Gators. This will be their last stand. I love Cinncinatti’s offense, but I get the feeling that they were shocked and hurt by Brian Kelly leaving for South Bend last month. Sometimes when a coach leaves before the bowl game a team is inspired, whether it be for revenge or some other reason.

I don’t buy that Florida won’t play hard because they lost out on a shot to play for the BCS national title game. I actually think it will work the other way. The Gators are angry. They wasted a shot to put a cap on a great era with a national title. Tim Tebow doesn’t want to go out a looser. This defense doesn’t want to go out losers. Don’t think that it’s lost on these players that it’s the last night of the Florida Gators as we know them.

The defense that allowed 12 points a game this season will hold the Bearcat offense in check and the final night of the Florida dynasty will be more comparable to last year’s national title then this year’s failure in the SEC championship game.

The Pick: Florida

Non-BCS picks: for the record….

College Football ‘09: Ohio State Buckeyes

For the next few weeks our very own Jordan Lauterbach will be previewing the upcoming 2009 College Football season. Each day, he will be posting a new preview so be sure to check in everyday.

Last Season: 10-3, 7-1, Lost to Texas in Fiesta Bowl

Losses don’t get much tougher than the one Ohio State had in last year’s Fiesta Bowl. After coming back from a 17-6 first half deficit, a first half in which they looked out-classed by yet another non-conference BCS opponent, the Buckeyes let Colt Mccoy march 76 yards down the field and lost the lead with 16 seconds remaining. It was a disapointing end to a season that saw the begining of a quarterback philosopy change for the school. That change revolves around one of the most exciting players in the country, Terrelle Pryor.

Of all the storylines entering this season, the matuaration of Terrelle Pryor is one of my favorites. The highly recuited quarterback was reportedly this close to going to rival Michigan when he decided he needed more time to mull the decision. Finally, the high-school start spurned the Big House for Ohio State. Much to the chagrin of almost everyone in the state of Michigan. Ironically, I think his skill set would have fit really well with a Rich Rodriguez spread offense.

Last season, Pryor split time with sixth year senior Todd Boeckman. Boeckman was largly in charge of holding down the ship until Pryer was ready to take over. He did a fairly decent job of it, completing 61% of his passes and only turned the ball over twice, but nothing to make Ohio State fans forget about the stud on the sideline.

As the season went on, Pryor was used more and more and looked better and better. He showed flashes of what he can be late in the year, when he recorded three separate individual season highs in three seperate games. In a loss to Penn State, Pryor threw for 226 yards. In a win at Northwestern, he had a passer rating of 253.20. In a win over Illinois, he displayed his incredible athleticism by running for 110 yards.

That athleticisem was shown again in the Fiesta Bowl when he lined up at wide reciever and caught a touchdown pass. This kid is special and will show it early and often this year. He reminds me a little of Tim Tebow with the way he can change the game in so many ways.

Pryer finished the year with over 1000 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. This will no doubt improve.

Here’s a not-so-bold prediction- Terrelle Pryor will win the Heisman trophy in his Junior season (‘10). He’ll certainly be in the running this season.

But as good as Pryor will be, he can’t do it on his own. Ohio State’s offense could stall a little if they don’t get help from other areas. Running back is one of those areas. Although he was banged up in the first game of the year last season, the loss of Bennie Wells is big. The Buckeyes will need sophomore Dan Herron to fill his shoes. Herron racked up 439 yards and 6 Td’s last year. With an increased number of carries, Herron will get his chance to shine. OSU will need that to take some of the pressure off Terrelle Pryor in the running game.

Pryor’s recievers will also be a major issue. The Buckeyes ranked 104th in passing offense last season. Without a proven running back core to fall back on, OSU will need increased controbutions from players like Dane Sanzenbacher and Ray Small. Sanzenbacher is the leading returning reciever. Last year he caught 21 passes for 272yards and one touchdown. This is not close to the statline he’ll need to have for the passing offense to be beter that it was last year.

While Pryor’s impact will be imeadiate, I question if the rest of the offense will produce enough to take some of the pressure off the star under center. I can see this being a major issue against good defenses.

What I wouldn’t worry about if I was a Buckeye fan is the defense. The unit returns eight starters and boasts the Big 10’s best pass defense. Two big losses on the defense to take a look at. First, the loss of linebacker James Laurinaitis is big. But those in the OSU know think that the core of Tyler Moeller, Austin Spitler, and Ross Hoffman could not miss a beat with Laurinaitis. Given the talent that the spawn of half the Legion of Doom was, that would be quite impressive.

The other defensive loss to keep an eye on is Jim Thorpe Award winner Malcom Jenkins. But don’t expect the secondary to suffer too much. Junior corner Chimdi Chekwa is a stud that a secondary can be built around.

While I think the emmergence of Terrelle Pryor will be as fun to watch as anything this season, the offense could struggle from time to time. But Pryor and a very good defense will still be enough to win the Big 10. But when it comes to a BCS Bowl…well, we’ll see….

3 Games To Watch

September 12- USC- While USC may not be as good this year as they’ve been in past years, they still are the Trojans. This should be a defensive battle as we get to see what this OSU offense can do. Somehow, I don’t expect the Navy game on September 5th to be a close one.

November 7th- @ Penn State- A key Big 10 road game for the Buckeyes. Late in the year, this one could be huge when it comes to the Big 10 standings.

November 21st- @ Michigan- C’mon, how can you not love this game. Michigan is going to be bad once again. I don’t see how anyone can realistically see more than five wins on the scedule (tops!). But no mater what, this game is always a special one. Plus, it’s Terrelle Pryors first game in Ann Arbor since spurning the Wolverines to go to OSU. That’s looking like a pretty smart move, by the way.

The Best News Charlie Weis Has Heard All Day

Urban Meyer just signed a contract extension to stay at Florida through 2014…

From ESPN:

Urban Meyer, who has taken the Florida Gators to rarified heights with two national championships in four seasons, will see his salary climb to equally exclusive company.

The $4 million club.

A new six-year, $24 million contract for Meyer was finalized Monday, taking his total financial package to $4 million per year and making him the SEC’s highest-paid coach in 2009.
It makes him the third-highest-paid coach in the country behind Pete Carroll’s repored $4.4 million salary at USC and Charlie Weis’ $4.2 million at Notre Dame.
Meyer’s new deal will run through the 2014 season, and there are also incentives involved that could raise his pay even higher.
Despite the increase in pay, Meyer’s buyout penalty remains $500,000, if he were to leave for any school, including Notre Dame, ESPN’s Joe Schad has reported. Florida has taken the stance that they want coaches who want to be at the university.

While the buyout is still in place, I would think its extremely unlikely that Meyer would leave when his contract still has multiple years on it.

I still think Weis’ job is in trouble if the team doesn’t at least compete for a BCS bowl bid this year. But the margin of error may have lengthened a bit because Meyer is no longer “waiting in the wings”.

Now, if Meyer was ever truly “waiting in the wings” is a subject up for debate. A few months ago, he was quoted as saying that Notre Dame was still his dream job. I’m starting to think that may have been a ploy to get the contact extension ball rolling with Florida. If it was, it was a brilliant move.
