The Patriots Have Taken The Sting Out of 16-0

Way to go, Bellichick and Brady. You’ve ruined yet another exciting moment for the rest of the NFL.

If you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t even realize that there are two teams in the NFL chasing perfection. You wouldn’t even think that 16-0 is possible for both the Colts and the Saints. That’s because we saw a team do it just two years ago, and we all saw it fade away on a Sunday afternoon in early January.

Since we are heading into Week 14, the questions have started popping up on how the two teams are going to handle their stretch run. Are they going for the gold and expose their team to injury, or will they focus on the prize they originally set out for nearly three months ago, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The ballots are in, and the vote is split at 1-1. The Colts will rest their starters after confirming home-field advantage, while the Saints plan on going for 16-0.

“It’ll be somewhat similar to what we’ve done,” Caldwell told Sports Illustrated football czar Peter King. “Going undefeated was always a secondary goal. I don’t think we’ll put too much emphasis on that.”

Caldwell is following in the footsteps of his predecessor Tony Dungy, who would never play his starters when he didn’t have to. Hell, have you heard the name of any backup quarterback more than Jim Sorgi? It makes a lot of sense. Payton Manning is the key cog in the Colts machine. If he was to take a blindside hit, or twist an ankle while playing in a game that didn’t really matter, fans and pundits alike would be calling for Caldwell’s head.

And that’s where the Saints are making their mistake.

New Orleans is in a similar position. They rely on Drew Brees to make their offense go. Sure, they have more of a running game this season than in previous years, but no one will debate that Brees is key piece to this high-octane offense. What would happen if Brees got hurt? Would Mark Brunell be able direct this offense? Yes, that Mark Brunell. Yes, he’s still alive, and no, we haven’t carbon-dated him yet.

Let’s be honest about what this whole thing means. Nothing. Nada. Not a damn thing. If you go 16-0, you are the answer to a trivia question. You are part of bar bets and conversations between fans about the greatest team of all time.

What happens if you lose in the playoffs? Ask the Pats. They are constantly reminded of 18-1. The NFL Network re-runs that Super Bowl more often than most Giants fan think about it. They aren’t quite a laughing stock, but they became Goliath in sports version of the biblical verse. The overwhelming favorite slayed by by the little team that could.

I always believe that teams that are distracted by the stupidity of 16-0 are worse off for it. It’s like people who spend their entire lives wanting to be millionaires. It’s an illusion. Once they get the money, they can’t even enjoy it because of all the bridges they’ve burned along the way.

Right now, the Saints are playing directly into that trap.

Matt Moore At Quarterback, Please?

Being from New York, and having friends who are Jets fans, I end up watching every single Jet game. More often than not, I wind up taking more away from watching the other team.

Yesterday, I watched the Carolina Panthers never have a chance in a game because their 86 year old starting quarterback simply can’t get it done anymore. Even worse, I’ve watched a coach who I have a ton of respect for in John Fox, stick with Jake Delhomme for far too long.

While everyone has been taking the position of “How can it get any worse?,” I’m going more along the lines of “Do you remember who your backup is?” There was a time when people were sniffing around trading for Matt Moore to be their starter, and now Fox refused to put him in the game.

Moore was an offensive rookie of the month in December of his first year. He led his team to a victory over the Cowboys in his first start. He’s got a career of 57%. He’s tall, has a big arm and can make plays, so why has it taken this long for Moore to get the start.

I’m just not sure. However, If I had to guess, I would guess that Fox’s loyalty has to do with his roots. He comes from an Giants organization who has been loyal to a fault. They’ve stuck with coaches and players when almost no one else would. That might have something to do with why Fox has insisted on keeping Jake in the lineup for so long.

The Panthers aren’t going to make the playoffs, and there are rumors that Fox will be out if they don’t. If he is, I’d love to have him back as the defensive coordinator of the Giants. At least, he won’t be able to leave anyone in too long on D. C.C. Brown will be off the team by then.

Donnie Swings and Misses: Revisiting June’s Draft

Despite the 2009-10 NBA Season being a week old, I have come to the decision that Donnie Walsh blew it in June’s Draft when he had the number eight overall pick. I understand that Walsh had his hands tied when Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio were already picked but I still cannot come to terms as to why Donnie Walsh believed that with their lottery pick Jordan Hill was the best option.

In my mock drafts, specifically leading up to the actual night of, I pegged the Knicks selecting Hill only because of the admiration the organization had for the former Wildcat. It is obvious though that there were two players that Walsh should have selected two guys before the thought of Hill crossed their minds. Ty Lawson and more specifically, Brandon Jennings, fit the Knicks plans and design and unfortunately, Donnie swung and missed…big time.

Hill has played in one game this year and has played a grand total of two minutes. Now no one thought he would come in and be a rookie of the year caliber type of player but no one thought he would be this far behind in terms of getting up to NBA speed and development. Compare those stats to Ty Lawson of the Denver Nuggets who is currently averaging 9 points and 3 assists in a backup role to Chauncey Billups in less than 20 minutes of play. I always thought Lawson would be a guy who could perfectly fit the bill with D’Antoni’s run and gun style. He is averaging a 5:1 Assists/Turnover ratio. That is how you play point guard folks.

Without Blake Griffin, Brandon Jennings has stolen the spotlight for this year’s rookies putting up ridiculous numbers for the Milwaukee Bucks. With a line of 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, Jennings has stolen the show and makes the departure of Ramon Sessions a forgotten thought. While he drew criticisms for leaving Arizona to play in Italy, Jennings has proven the inconsistency shown overseas was all a fluke, and his American game translates much better.

So where does Jordan Hill fit? Mike D’Antoni has already converted Wilson Chandler to the 4 to play similarly to Shawn Marion when D’Antoni was in Phoenix and he has David Lee at center. With Gallo and Al Harrington also being able to play the 3 and the 4, the need for Hill is perplexing. If Donnie Walsh felt there was a pressing need for a big man, why did he not draft Brook Lopez over Gallinari in 2008? Has Gallo proven anything in the NBA besides the fact that 75% of his shots this season have been 3 pointers? If I wanted that, give me Jason Kapono for a fraction of the money and draft Lopez.

The track record for Donnie Walsh’s draft picks have been less than impressive. Here are a list of the first round picks since Walsh began drafting with the Indiana Pacers.

The Good: Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, Al Harrington, Danny Granger,

The Bad: George McCloud, Dale Davis, Travis Best, Erick Dampier, Vonteego Cummings

The Ugly: Malik Sealy, Scott Haskin, Eric Piatkowski, Austin Croshere, Primoz Brezec, Fred Jones, David Harrison, Jonathan Bender, Shawne Williams

The names don’t lie. Walsh has put all of his chips onto the table by acquiring expiring contract after expiring contract. If Walsh is unable to land Lebron James, what will the reaction be then from Knicks fans? With no 2010 first round pick (which would have surely land them in the lottery) when can the Knicks address the point guard situation? Can Toney Douglas actually assume the full-time position next year? Doubt it. All Knicks fans can do now is watch Jordan Hill continually disappoint hopefuls by sitting on the bench while Brandon Jennings continues to soar in Wisconsin. Who knows, maybe he will start to take Packer fans minds off of Brett Favre.

Calvin Pace Suspended For Four Games…

Wow, the fact that anyone in any major sport is still being caught for steroids is amazing to me. Here’s the story from Rotoworld:

NFL suspended Jets OLB Calvin Pace four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
It’s a big blow to the Jets’ defense. Pace is New York’s top pass rusher, and early impressions of backup Vernon Gholston’s second offseason aren’t promising. Pace will be eligible to return in Week 5 against the Dolphins. Flexible coach Rex Ryan could adjust by using Bart Scott and Bryan Thomas outside with Jamaal Westerman and David Harris inside during Pace’s time off. It’s either that or Gholston is going to have to play a lot early in the season.

Pace later came out with a statement that was the basic athlete denial where he claims that he didn’t know what he took was illegal, like anyone believes that at this point in the game. There is a hotline that NFL players can call to find out if what they are going to take is on the banned substance list. I’m still wondering when an athlete is just going to say “Shit, you caught me.”

As for the Jets, this really puts them in a position where they are kinda screwed for the first four games. They play Houston, New England, Tennessee and New Orleans. Three of those first four games are against pretty damn good offenses. They now have to play uber-bust Vernon Gholston against all of those teams.
