WEC 47: Stock Watch!

Stock Up

  1. Joseph Benavidez – I did not see that one coming whatsoever. Miguel Torres was the class of the division for so long that no one could have ever guess that he would lose to someone like Benavidez. He had the reach advantage, the experience advantage, and had been improving his striking with Mark DellaGrotte. However, Benavidez charged ahead and stifled just about any offense that the mullet could muster and dominated Torres from bell to bell. We can only assume that a rematch with Dominick Cruz is on the docket.
  2. Dominick Cruz – Speaking of the new banntamweight champ, Cruz impressive dispatched of Brian Bowles using a jumpy, movement based style that left me confused. You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t beleive that it will work against someone who is an equal athlete to him, but for the moment he is the champ. Expect the aforementioned rematch sooner than later.
  3. Scott Jorgensen – How about that guillotine? He lifted Chad George up off the ground and than let him go and left him laying on the floor. With that performace, Jorgensen enters the top five at 145 and will likely need just one more win before getting his title shot.

Stock Down

  1. Miguel Angel Torres – Things are looking grim for the former champ. There was a time where Miguel was at the bottom of the pound-for-pound top 10. Now, he is coming off two consecutive losses and has seemingly been passed by three separate fighters at 135. Will he ever gt back to being dominant? It’s not looking good.
  2. Jens Pulver – It seems like I’ve wrote this column six times now. Pulver remains a legend of the sport, but simply can’t cut it anymore. He came out with a terrible gameplan. He knew that Javier Vasquez wanted to take him down, but instead of concentrating on his sprawl, he was throwing kicks. It didn’t make much sense. Now a loser of 9-of-13, you’d have to assume that he is done as a fighter and will concentrate on coaching.
  3. The WEC – With the move to pay-per-view coming, the best thing that could have happened to the WEC was the fighters that already have name recognition winning. Guys like Torres and Brian Bowles winning was an important step towards creating stars that can headline money making cards that aren’t named Urijah Faber. However, they now have to start all over again with Cruz and Benavidez. Not good.

The Importance of A Good Cornerman…

I am still amazed by how many people think that strategy is a big part of mixed martial arts. How much money does Greg Jackson have to make before people realize that having a good corner is just important as being well prepared for your fight.

Just ask Mark Coleman. Coleman brought former Randy Couture confidant Shawn Tompkins to the cage with him, and Tompkins gave him some TERRRIBLE advice. Here’s what Josh Gross of SI.com had to say about it:

“Coleman made Couture’s night easy when, at the advice of his trainer Shawn Tompkins and the despite the fact it has never been his path to victory, he chose to stand and trade.”

“…Shortly into the bout, Coleman carried the attitude of a confused athlete, one who was thinking instead of fighting.”

“Between the first and second round, Coleman looked up at Tompkins as the Canadian offered instructions on how to keep distance and how to fire off combination. I’m fairly certain he would have loved if Tompkins told him to run out there and take a shot on a double-leg. If you’re going to go out, go out at what you do best.”

Who besides Tompkins could possibly believe that Coleman had any chance standing and trading with Couture? Over the last few years, Couture has drilled his boxing to the point where it is on par with his wrestling. He has some of the best head movement in the game. As supposed to Coleman, who had no head movement.

What a joke.

MMA World Rankings: Welterweight

I’ve seen a lot of MMA World Rankings lately and I haven’t found one I 100% agree with.  Therefore I’m launching the first ever 3rd String Safety Official MMA World Rankings.  Please, hold your applause.  These rankings will be fluid and updated after every major MMA card.

Updated 2/8/10

1) Georges St. Pierre (19-2)

I don’t know if GSP’s dominance can really be explained in words.  He’s the best wrestler in MMA and that’s the base of his game.  However he also has top notch jiu-jitsu and excellent striking.  Quite simply GSP is a freakish athlete and I’m not sure anyone will knock him off this perch for quite some time.  He’s already dismantled Fitch, Alves and Koscheck.   To me GSP has nothing left to prove at 170 pounds.  It’s time to see what he can do at 185.

Next up: Dan Hardy, UFC 111

2) Jon Fitch (21-3)

How good is Jon Fitch?  He might be one of the top 10 pound for pound fighters in the world and he’s not even the best fighter in his own weight class.  Fitch has only lost once, to GSP, in the last seven years.  He’s 11-1 in the UFC and holds wins over Thiago Alves, Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago.  His wrestling is amazing, his jiu-jitsu doesn’t get nearly enough credit (he submitted Roan Carneriro) and he can hold his own striking.  If it wasn’t for GSP, Jon Fitch would be a superstar.

The only knock on Fitch is that as of late he’s taken a workman-like approach to his fights.  He’s fought smart but hasn’t looked to finish fights.  While this might keep him in the win column it’ll keep him out of the title picture.

Next up: Thiago Alves, UFC 111

3) Thiago Alves (16-6)

Alves is another guy who curses GSP’s existence everyday.  Alves is a huge welterweight with sick striking and great take-down defense.  If GSP didn’t exist Alves and Fitch would probably pass the title between each other.

Up Next: Jon Fitch, UFC 111

4) Josh Koscheck (14-4)

It’s amazing that ‘Kos even won a single fight on the Ultimate Fighter. Four years ago he was a wrestler wearing an MMA’s fighters clothing. He was nicknamed the “blanket” by the fans and got a rep as being a lay-n-pray fighter. Since then ‘Kos has evolved into a complete fighter. His take downs are still top notch but he’s developed into a very sound kick boxer. He has a tremendous right hand, ala Dan Henderson, that he might be guilty of loading up on too much. Koscheck is a great athlete and along with GSP, Fitch and Alves form a tier in the welterweight division. After ‘Kos there’s a big gap in talent.

Next up: Paul Daley, UFC 113

5) Paulo Thiago (12-1)

Thiago 2 – AKA 1.  Thiago is no fluke.  In three of his four UFC fights Thiago has taken on three top welterweights and beat two of them and hung with the other.  Thiago sits at 5 in my welterweight rankings but has an unbelievable ceiling.  His kick boxing is getting better every fight and he finally is starting to show some technique to go along with his natural power.  His ground skills also are top notch and after his text book choke out of Mike Swick  has now put the entire division on notice.

Next up: Nothing Scheduled.

6) Dan Hardy (23-6)

Hardy put his name on the map with a serious of impressive wins, including a dominating performance against Mike Swick.  Hardy has heavy hands and decent take down defense but that’s about it. Koscheck questioned Hardys legitimacy as a number one contender and I have to say I agree. He doesn’t hold a win over a top welterweight and his fight against Marcus Davis could have gone either way.

Regardless as Matt Serra taught us St. Pierre isn’t invincible and Hardy’s heavy hands can certainly get the job done.

Next up: Georges St. Pierre, UFC 111

7) Nick Diaz (21-7)

Nick Diaz your career and fighting style defies logic.  Diaz attacks with these goofy “slap” punches that in theory shouldn’t work yet we’ve seen that his K.O. power in both his hands (see his KO of boxer Robbie Lawler.)  His wrestling is average but his jiu-jitsu skills are top notch.  The Cesar Gracie black-belt loves to use his BJJ to sweep and take down his opponent (both him and his brother love the standing Kimura.)

Next up: Nothing Scheduled.

8 ) Paul Daley (23-8-2)

Daley is another upstart British fighter. Filling it for Mike Swick he upset Martin Kampman by KO.  His encore performance he KO Dustin Hazelett in highlight reel fashion. Much like Hardy “Semtex” has heavy hands that are very fast, solid boxing technique but that’s about it. He has no ground game and not much of a wrestling base. He can knock you out but a smart game plan will neutralize his power.

It feels weird putting a guy in the 8 spot who lost to Nick Thompson by decision just 11 months ago.  However, I’m not sure there’s anyone more deserving.

Next up: Josh Koshceck, UFC 113

9) Martin Kampmann (15-3)

Kampmann was in line for a shot at GSP after a narrow win over Carlos Condit. A funny thing happened on the way to a title fight. He got TKO’d against Daley in a questionable stoppage. Kampmann was pressed against the fence and eating blows but he was covering up and never was dropped. It was the rare standing stoppage. Kampmann is a kick boxer by trade but has developed a well rounded game.  He’s a dangerous fighter to try to stand and trade with.  Just ask Jacob Volkman.

Next up: Ben Saunders, UFC 111

10) Carlos Condit (24-5)

The former WEC champ was on the fast track to a title shot before losing a close fight to Martin Kampmann.  Since then Condit rebounded by beating Jake Ellenberger (a win that gets more impressive as we see what a fighter Ellenberger is.)  The Natural Born Killer has a well rounded game, mixing in submissions and striking skills.

Next up: Rory MacDonald, UFC 115

Honorable Mention: Jay Hieron, Dan Hornbuckle

Not Ranked: Jake Shields, Matt Hughes, Diego Sanchez

Prospects: John Hathaway, Rick Story, Matt Riddle, Nick Osipczack, Rory MacDonald

How To Sound Like An Idiot: Ron Artest Getting Drunk at Halftime

Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t even know where to begin. I’m flabbergasted. Rotoworld:

Lakers forward Ron Artest admits he used to drink alcohol during games while he was on the Bulls.

“I used to drink Hennessy … at halftime,” said Artest, who played with the Bulls from 1999-2002. “I (kept it) in my locker. I’d just walk to the liquor store (near the stadium) and get it.” This is very shocking news and it will be interesting to see what David Stern has to say about this one. Owners should hope that Artest is not disciplined so long after the fact.

David Stern just passed out and died in his office. I can’t believe that Artest is this stupid. It’s one thing for an athlete to have an alcohol problem, as we’ve seen that way too many times in the past. I don’t think that’s the problem here. The problem is that he is just far too dumb for his own good.

Is it bad that I have nothing more to say? That should show you the kind of esteem that I hold Artest in.

Maybe he was drunk for the brawl. That would at least be some kind of explanation.

A Move That Needs To Be Made

I love it when there are some really obvious moves in the world of sports that general managers should make and they flat out ignore it or make up some BS reason as to why they choose to no longer pursue a certain athlete. I might not be like Jason, who thrives at mixing and matching players’ contracts or figuring out team’s salary cap situation, but a move like this makes me believe that maybe becoming a General Manager is not as difficult as people make it out to be.

A day after Philadelphia 76ers Head Coach Eddie Jordan and GM Ed Stefanski met with Free Agent Allen Iverson in Dallas, no deal is in place and both parties seem to be “non-committal” at the moment. Despite the fact that several sources are reporting “there is no doubt” he will be coming back, I remember hearing the same sort of reports when the Knicks were targeting AI. Yet, it never happened and to me the Knicks did a huge disservice to their fans, a fan base that has suffered nearly a decade through uneventful season after uneventful season.

The Sixers need the future Hall of Famer more so than New York and it makes even more sense! Look at the injuries that Philly is battling through:

  • Lou Williams: Jaw Injury – Out 8 weeks
  • Mareese Speights: Knee Injury – Out 6-8 weeks
  • Elton Brand: Hamstring Injury – Came back last night, though admitted not 100%

With Speights and Williams out until after the new year, the Sixers are missing 30 points and are struggling to find a cast of characters to shoulder the load. Andre Iguodala (the other AI) has struggled shooting the ball (42%, compared to his career 47% FG) and Thaddeus Young has not become fully comfortable with Eddie Jodan’s offensive style. Iverson becomes the scorer of the team and most of all a closer, something the Sixers have desperately lacked. The team is 5-13 and falling fast in the Eastern Conference but 7 of those losses have come by six points or less. Iverson knows the big stage and can show up brightest in those spots.

Yes, the roster is young, and the question will always center around would Iverson stunt the growth of the team. A playoff birth is not out of the question with Iverson. He could keep them afloat just enough so when Lou Williams and Speights come back healthy, they could push for that 7th or 8th seed. Milwaukee, Charlotte, and Indiana (the current 6-8 seeds) are anything but locks for a playoff bid and it would not shock anyone if they fell off the map.

So Philadelphia, let’s look at the pro’s here. You generate local/national buzz, you are able to sell tickets and jerseys, and gain some sort of national relevance. The con’s you deal withanother AI fallout at the end of the year since he will be on a one-year deal. This does not even need to be thought about! I could have told you all of this in three words but I thought 509 would make my argument more convincing.

SIGN ALLEN IVERSON! Armsleeve night would be one hell of a promotion.
