Where Are The Jets Going?

With the last loss that the Jets suffered, the season is pretty much over. In order to get to 10 wins, the team will have to win six of their final seven games. With a rookie quarterback, a rookie head coach, and a team that is seemingly snake bit, I don’t that it’s going to happen.

However, I’m not so sure that this season is the only issue the Jets face. With Mark Sanchez at the helm of this team, there is a misconception that this is a young team that is going to get better as their movie star-esque quarterback does. The problem is that the rest of the team around him isn’t nearly as young as him, and in fact, might be considered an aging experiment that isn’t really working.

In the backfield, Thomas Jones is a back running on borrowed time. He’s 31 years old and has has over 2,000 career carries. He’s going to inevitably break down in the coming season, and when it happen slowly. It’s going to look a lot like the train wreck that the Chargers are currently going through with LaDanian Tomlinson. He’s going to fall off a cliff. Behind him, you have Leon Washington who is going to be coming off a devastating leg injury that might effect him for the rest of the career, and Shonn Greene, who has some potential, but lacks big play ability.

At receiver, Braylon Edwards is a huge problem. It’s not just that he is dropping two point conversions that are costing the Jets games, it’s what going to happen after the Jets play their final game this year. Edwards is going to be a free agent after the season. He’s going to demand that kind of contract that a receiver like Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald has. Is anyone crazy enough to think that Edwards has proven he’s in that tier of wide receivers, or has earned cash of that magnitude? If you give him that huge contract, and add his deal to the big free agent pay days that they gave too of players like Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Damien Woody, not to mention the contract extension that they will have to give super cornerback Darelle Revis and the Jets find themselves in a situation where they may HAVE to keep Edwards, but will be crippling themselves for the future in the process.

As for the defense, the key to it remains the previously mentioned Jenkins. In the past two years, there has been two different Jet teams. When Jenkins is on the field, the defense has been as good as any in the league. He stuffs up the middle of the field and allows for the very average Jets linebacking corps to make plays. Not the mention the fact that he is one of the few 3-4 nose tackles in the league that can actually push the pocket and get sacks. The problem is that he just can’t stay healthy. In two seasons, he’s played at one hundred percent in roughly six games. The Jets also have not built quality depth behind him, meaning he can’t come off the field. What they have now is a 31 year old player who can’t stay healthy at a position where players break down quickly who is making 15 million dollars over the next three years.

Those are just a few players on the Jets that are going to be seeing their careers on the downswing over the next few years. Add an aging offensive line, and a linebacking corps that is expensive, but not very good and the Jets are not a team that is building something.

They are a team that might be in serious trouble.

Can Texans Offense Survive Without Owen Daniels?

I’ve spent a bunch of times thinking about the Houston Texans today. Mainly the injury that was suffered by their all-pro tight end Owen Daniels.

This team is built around the idea that their remarkable offense will make up for the fact that they have a someone suspect defense, especially in the back end. We all saw what happened to that offense early in the season when you took away Kevin Walter. The team faltered against a Jets team that was debuting a new head coach and a new quarterback.

Now, Daniels is not Kevin Walter. Daniels is an amazing player. If I was to sit here and rank tight ends, he would be in the top tier with guys like Vernon Davis and Tony Gonzalez. Can this team survive without him making him respect the deep middle of the field?

Here’s whats going to happen now. Teams are going to roll their safeties over the top to double cover Andre Johnson. With Johnson double covered, Matt Schaub will have to find a new player to go to alleviate the pressure that will be put on him. I just don’t know if that player is on the Texans roster.

Typically, tight end is a premium position. One that is nice to have, but not necessary if you want to be a winning team. Unless of course, your second best offensive weapon is said tight end.

The Texans might be screwed.

Anderson Silva Wants To Fight At Heavyweight; Eyes Frank Mir

My god. Does this man ever stop? Will he ever fight at 185 again, or is that belt just going to disappear in the back of his closet? What is his obsession with fighting up?

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Sherdog is reporting that Anderson Silva is going to move to heavyweight now, This is after his most recent bout was at 205 lbs, when he dismantled Forrest Griffin at UFC 101. Silva is still the 185 lbs champ, and has a number one contender waiting for him in Dan Henderson. He has also discussed dropping his title in an effort to pursue the biggest fights.

The endgame of all of this is easy to see. He wants to fight Brock Lesnar. Simply put, that would be the biggest fight in MMA history, and if nothing else, would put a ton of money in his pocket before Silva walks away into the sunset, or into the boxing ring to fight Roy Jones. That being said, we’ve always said on this site that in order to beat Lesnar, you would need to have at least comparable size to stop his takedowns. Silva would walk into the ring at 215 or 220 compared to Brock’s 280. Not good, but if anyone could stop Brock, it would be the man who I frequently refer to as a ninja because of his skills on the feet.

However, am I the only one thinking that this is getting a little bit ridiculous? Imagine if Silva played any other sport. Think about this for a second, what if Andre Johnson decided that he had done all that he could playing wide receiver and wanted to play safety. Could you imagine the backlash? Beat writers would crucify him, talking heads would talk about how selfish he is, and his teammates would want to kill him. However, since he is a fighter we let him get away with it. Isn’t it the same thing? One guy who thinks that there is no one that can keep up with him doing one thing, so he decides to do another.

Personally, I think it’s getting hard to take Silva too seriously.
