Being from New York, and having friends who are Jets fans, I end up watching every single Jet game. More often than not, I wind up taking more away from watching the other team.
Yesterday, I watched the Carolina Panthers never have a chance in a game because their 86 year old starting quarterback simply can’t get it done anymore. Even worse, I’ve watched a coach who I have a ton of respect for in John Fox, stick with Jake Delhomme for far too long.
While everyone has been taking the position of “How can it get any worse?,” I’m going more along the lines of “Do you remember who your backup is?” There was a time when people were sniffing around trading for Matt Moore to be their starter, and now Fox refused to put him in the game.
Moore was an offensive rookie of the month in December of his first year. He led his team to a victory over the Cowboys in his first start. He’s got a career of 57%. He’s tall, has a big arm and can make plays, so why has it taken this long for Moore to get the start.
I’m just not sure. However, If I had to guess, I would guess that Fox’s loyalty has to do with his roots. He comes from an Giants organization who has been loyal to a fault. They’ve stuck with coaches and players when almost no one else would. That might have something to do with why Fox has insisted on keeping Jake in the lineup for so long.
The Panthers aren’t going to make the playoffs, and there are rumors that Fox will be out if they don’t. If he is, I’d love to have him back as the defensive coordinator of the Giants. At least, he won’t be able to leave anyone in too long on D. C.C. Brown will be off the team by then.
