Kobe And LeBron; First Puppets, Now Teamates?

At first this sounds absolutely crazy.  So bear with me.

On Bill Simmons most recent podcast he suggested that Kobe and LeBron want to play together.  I told you this would sound crazy.  Now while it’s obvious neither man would want to play second fiddle to the other consider these things.

  • Both are obsessed with winning.

Playing together would give them the best chance of winning many many rings over the next 10 years.

  • They generally like each other.

They played on the Redeem Team together and LeBron even picked up some of Kobes work ethic.

  • Kobe got his ring without Shaq.

He got the monkey off his back so to speak.  He proved he could carry a team to a championship being the alpha dog.  What does he have left to prove?

  • Kobe is 31, but an old 31.

He’s played in 959 games, logged 35,000 NBA minutes and that doesn’t even take into account playoffs or the Olympics.  Is it that far fetched that Kobe would be willing to share the limelight with LeBron in order to extend his career?

A whole lot of hypotheticals but let’s say LeBron decides he wants to be a Laker and Kobe approves.  Under the cap the Lakers couldn’t outright sign LeBron however they could pull off a sign and trade with Cleveland.

A max contract for LeBron would start at between 15-18 million or so.  What if the Lakers in a sign and trade sent Andrew Bynum (14 million in 2010)  Lamar Odom (8 million in 2010) and Jordan Farmar (3 million in 2010) and 3 first round picks for LeBron and cap filler (think Anthony Parker/Jamario Moon.)

Who doesn’t win in this scenario?

  • LeBron gets his max money (and the extra year on his deal only the Cavs could offer him) the opportunity to play in a major media market all without sacrificing the ability to win it all (both in the near and short term.)  Gasol, LeBron, Artest, Kobe?  Are you serious? Is anyone else even coming out of the West for the next five years?
  • Really this is the only way the Cavs can save face.  If they lose LeBron for nothing it kills them.  Getting Bynum doesn’t equate to keeping LeBron but it helps soften the blow.  Anyone notice Bynum finally seems to be getting it this year?  He’s quietly averaging 20 points, 12 boards and nearly 2 blocks per game.  Without Gasol out he’s stepped up big time.  And although it feels like Bynum has been around as long as Kwame Brown he’s only 22.

It’s an incredibly far fetched idea at first glance.  But, when you put the pieces together it actually seems like a solid fit.

UFC 105 Michael Bisping Ecko Walkout Shirt

The Brit is back.

Michael Bisping showed a drastically improved wrestling game in his victory over Denis Kang last saturday night, and finally has put the memory of Dan Henderson’s vicious knockout at UFC 100 behind him. As much as I want to put the video up here to remind everyone, I’ll contain myself as a congratulations to him.

Bisping is one of three MMA stars that is sponsored by mainstream magnate Mark Ecko. In fact, Ecko opened his own Ecko MMA brand that is behind Bisping, Frank Mir, and Miguel Angel Torres.

It doesn’t look Bisping-specfic; if it did you would imagine it would have a English flag on it somewhere. However, if you are looking for a more toned down MMA shirt that no one would even know was a fight shirt. This is the one for you.

MMA Warehouse
has it for just 27.99.

Where Are The Jets Going?

With the last loss that the Jets suffered, the season is pretty much over. In order to get to 10 wins, the team will have to win six of their final seven games. With a rookie quarterback, a rookie head coach, and a team that is seemingly snake bit, I don’t that it’s going to happen.

However, I’m not so sure that this season is the only issue the Jets face. With Mark Sanchez at the helm of this team, there is a misconception that this is a young team that is going to get better as their movie star-esque quarterback does. The problem is that the rest of the team around him isn’t nearly as young as him, and in fact, might be considered an aging experiment that isn’t really working.

In the backfield, Thomas Jones is a back running on borrowed time. He’s 31 years old and has has over 2,000 career carries. He’s going to inevitably break down in the coming season, and when it happen slowly. It’s going to look a lot like the train wreck that the Chargers are currently going through with LaDanian Tomlinson. He’s going to fall off a cliff. Behind him, you have Leon Washington who is going to be coming off a devastating leg injury that might effect him for the rest of the career, and Shonn Greene, who has some potential, but lacks big play ability.

At receiver, Braylon Edwards is a huge problem. It’s not just that he is dropping two point conversions that are costing the Jets games, it’s what going to happen after the Jets play their final game this year. Edwards is going to be a free agent after the season. He’s going to demand that kind of contract that a receiver like Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald has. Is anyone crazy enough to think that Edwards has proven he’s in that tier of wide receivers, or has earned cash of that magnitude? If you give him that huge contract, and add his deal to the big free agent pay days that they gave too of players like Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Damien Woody, not to mention the contract extension that they will have to give super cornerback Darelle Revis and the Jets find themselves in a situation where they may HAVE to keep Edwards, but will be crippling themselves for the future in the process.

As for the defense, the key to it remains the previously mentioned Jenkins. In the past two years, there has been two different Jet teams. When Jenkins is on the field, the defense has been as good as any in the league. He stuffs up the middle of the field and allows for the very average Jets linebacking corps to make plays. Not the mention the fact that he is one of the few 3-4 nose tackles in the league that can actually push the pocket and get sacks. The problem is that he just can’t stay healthy. In two seasons, he’s played at one hundred percent in roughly six games. The Jets also have not built quality depth behind him, meaning he can’t come off the field. What they have now is a 31 year old player who can’t stay healthy at a position where players break down quickly who is making 15 million dollars over the next three years.

Those are just a few players on the Jets that are going to be seeing their careers on the downswing over the next few years. Add an aging offensive line, and a linebacking corps that is expensive, but not very good and the Jets are not a team that is building something.

They are a team that might be in serious trouble.
