This Week’s Biggest NFL Injury? Saints’ Porter Tears ACL…

Whenever I watch the Saints play, I frequently find myself staring at Tracy Porter. I thought he could be a good man-to-man corner, and It turns out I was right. He’s really emerging as a nice playmaker at that spot under the tutelage of Greg Williams and Darren Sharper. Not so much anymore according to Rotoworld:

The Saints reportedly fear that RCB Tracy Porter will be lost for the season with a torn left ACL.

An MRI will determine the extent. Porter, whose first season also ended on injured reserve, was playing very well with 41 tackles, three picks, eight breakups, and two forced fumbles through nine games. Rookie Malcolm Jenkins may be forced to start the rest of the way of Porter’s ACL is torn.

Now, without Porter the Saints pass defense will really take a hit. I’ve been very strong on my point that while the Saints have played better defensively, they are very thin on defense. Let’s see if I was right.

UFC 105: Randy Couture's Affliction Walkout Shirt

With UFC 105 in the books, the Interweb is ablaze with MMA fans who are questioning if Captain America really won his fight against Brandon Vera. Jason weighed in on the situation last night, but one thing is for sure: It was a solid fight that propels Couture into the light heavyweight discussion.

Here’s the shirt he walked to the ring in last night:

Here’s something interesting: Randy Couture has his own clothing company, Xtreme Couture. He was wearing an ad for them on his shorts last night. Why is he wearing an Affliction shirt? How much money do you think that they paid him for this?

Anyway, It’s an awesome shirt. Again, Blue on black seems to be the new thing to do in MMA shirts.

Check it out at MMA Warehouse for 47.99.

Did Vera Get Robbed?

I wasn’t outraged by the descion in Couture/Vera.  I don’t think Vera got robbed like Shogun did.  I think it’s clear Couture won Round 1 and Vera won Round 2.  It’s the 3rd round that’s debatleable.  Before I render my verdict I want to watch the fight again.  In the meantime here’s what various MMA sites are saying.

UFC 105 Impressions

Stock Up:

Andre Winner: Damn, where did this come from.  Winner striking was insanely crisp and technical.  What happens when he goes to the ground remains to be scene but an impressive, impressive performance for the 28 year old lightweight.

Alexander Gustafsson: When the UFC signed Gustasfasson the Internet was ablaze with excitement.  Doing some digging on Youtube I found an awful lot to like about the  22 year old, Sweedish kick-boxer.  His frame, 6′5, gives him a lot of power and provides him a reach advantage over most fighters.  His power is obvious, a straight job took down Hamman, and his hand speed (think Mike Swick) might be unrivaled at 205.  Gustasfasson is 9-0 but hasn’t fought anyone of note and it’s unclear if his wrestling/ju-jitsu game is any good.  However, the future seems to be very bright.

Dennis Siver: Didn’t make the main card but by Sherdog.com’s account he might have had KO of the year.  Here’s the description.

He lands a picture-perfect spinning-back kick to the midsection that folds Kelly in two and puts him on his seat. Siver swarms before backing away and inviting Kelly to stand. In obvious pain, Kelly struggles to his feet only to be overwhelmed by Siver strikes. Referee Dan Miragliotta stops the bout at 2:53 of the second frame. Kelly stays down on the mat for a couple minutes as he is tended to. He leaves the cage with help of his team, who are holding a bucket in front of him in case he has to vomit.

And scene.  Despite some struggled early in his UFC career Siver has now rattled off 3 UFC wins in a row and is in line for a bigger name opponent.

Nicholas Dominic Osipczak and Matt Riddle: A battle of two very young fighters that didn’t make T.V.  Osipczak showcased great ju-jitsu in his victory over Riddle.  Riddle, despite being listed as a purple belt on UFC.com, got outclassed on the ground.  He’s a great wrestler but needs the rest of his game to catch up.

Terry Etim: Etim always intrigued me because he was so tall, 6′1, for a lightweight.  Much like Siver despite early UFC struggled he’s won 3 in a row and is now 5-2 overall in the UFC.

John Hathaway: A recurring theme tonight the rise of the young prospect.  Hathaway, a 22 year old welter-weight, dominated and move to 12-0 in his career.

Ross Pearson: Very impressed with Pearson tonight.  Riley is a legit fighter and one of the tougher tests a TUF guy can have in his first fight.  Perason’s striking was versilite and he physically destroyed Riley.  He looked great both in and out of the clinch.  Great showing.

Michael Bisping:
To be honest I didn’t think Bisping had this in him.  I’ve always argued that Bisping built his reputation off fighting cans and being a British hero.  The first round seemed to affirm everything I thought about Bisping, he’s an average striker and average grappler.  Well…I was wrong.  Bisping showcased amazing ju-jitsu defesne in Round 1.  He had incridibley active hips and kept Kang (a BJJ blackbelt) at bay.  Round 2 Bisping flipped a switch and landed giant takedowns and pounded out Kang.  He broke Kangs will.  Very impressed.

Stock Down:

The UFC:
What did the UFC gain tonight?  Vera/Couture was a lackluster fight and provided MMA with another controversial judges decision.  Swick lost convincingly to Hardy who now fights GSP.  Yawn.  Beating; Gono, Markham, Davis and Swick is enough to be a title contender?  Fitch won 8 UFC fights before he got to GSP, Koscheck won 5 in a row, Alves won 7 in a row (including wins over Hughes and Koscheck.)  Sorry I just don’t buy Hardy as a legit title contender.  The UFC also lost Lesnar and ‘Nog due to injury tonight.

NBA

Your 2009 NBA Stat Line of The Year

November 14, 2009: Milwaukee Bucks 129 – Golden State Warriors 125.

Brandon Jennings: 55 points (21-34 FG, 7-8 3PT, 6-8 FT) 5 rebounds 5 assists

While the rebounds and assists may seem average, this is a rookie point guard who just dropped double nickel! With every impressive game Jennings has, the NCAA cringes as more and more high school seniors will find overseas to be the more attractive route rather than college. Knicks fans are quiet tonight, as well they should be. Jordan Hill is showing some positive signs (in garbage time albeit).

Here’s to Brandon Jennings, your 2009-10 ROY.

What Now: 'Nog Out Of UFC 108, Lesnar Out Indefinitely.

The list of injured UFC super stars is currently bigger then the list of healthy ones.

Brock Lesnar is out of action indefinitely.   Dana White shed light on Lesnar’s illness:

“He’s in a hospital up in North Dakota somewhere right now,” said White. “He went to Canada and some bad stuff happened to him, so we’ve got to figure it out.

“He doesn’t want to talk about it publicly, but he’s in bad shape. He’s not well and he’s not going to be getting well anytime soon.”

In a word that’s very cryptic.

“He has other problems too,” continued White, fielding a question about his diagnosis of mononucleosis. “He is not good. He is very, very sick and he’s going to be out for a while.”

White went on to indicate that the creation of an interim title might be necessary.

In a word WOW. God knows what’s wrong with Lesnar but White’s words almost make it seem…life threatening almost?

“You know, I can’t really talk about it right now, but he’s in rough shape. He’s in really bad shape … and we’re going to have to do some stuff to take care of this guy. He is not well and he’s not getting any better.

I hope Lesnar can beat whatever this is. Despite my distaste for him as a fighter he’s still a big part of what makes MMA so great, The David trying to beat the Goliath. This of course puts the UFC in a big bind. Lesnar/Carwin sapped UFC 106 of a main event then UFC 108 of a main event. Now it would be easy to have Velasquez/’Nog be a for the interim heavyweight title and have that headline UFC 108, except for one giant problem. ‘Nog has a staph infection and has withdrawn from the fight.

“White said the infection had become serious after entering Nogueira’s blood stream and that the Brazilian might need to be hospitalized and fed an intravenous antibiotic to combat it.”

Awesome. Now the next logical step would be to put Carwin against Velasquez, a fight that was originally suppose to go down way back when and have it be for the interim title. Of course there’s only one giant problem.

“White said an alternate pairing between Velasquez and Carwin would not be possible, as Carwin recently underwent knee surgery while waiting for Lesnar to recover. Carwin posted on his Twitter account Saturday that he should be “ready to fight by Feb.”

So what now?

It looks like someone will be fighting Cain Velasquez for the interim title on January 2nd the question is who…

Already Ruled Out: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Shane Carwin, Brock Lesnar

Frank Mir: Scheduled to fight Kongo at UFC 107. However, coming off a loss in his last fight (Lesnar) can you put him in an interim title fight right now? Can you also afford to take him off the already weak 107 card?

Junior Dos Santos: Already scheduled to fight Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108 so the timing works out. 3-0 in the UFC with dominant wins over Werdum, Struve and Cro-Cop justify his spot in a title fight.

Other then those two no one else really deserves a chance.  Cro-Cop has been awful, Rothwell just got killed by Cain, Gonzaga is a solid fighter but recently lost to Carwin, Kongo lost to Velasquez in his last fight and Struve lost to Dos Santos.

To me there’s only one option and that’s Dos Santos vs. Velasquez for the interim title at 108.   You can find a live body to replace Dos Santos in his fight against Gonzaga (someone like Chase Gromely.)  108 is deep enough that you can push that fight off the main card without trouble.

The UFC certainly is having a rough end of the year.
