Strikeforce: Fedor v. Rogers Predictions

Fabricio Werdum v. Antonio Silva

How often do you see a fight between two heavyweights that are basically BJJ specialists? The heavyweight division has been filled with big wrestlers and strikers for so long now that besides Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, most of these guys don’t know how to spell kimura.

Werdum is coming off a victory over Mike Kyle at Strikeforce’s last big card. He’s not much of a striker, but his BJJ is top level. If nothing else, just look at some of the names that he’s fought over the last few years: Alstair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos, Brandon Vera, Gabriel Gonzaga, Andrei Arlovski and Aleksander Emelianenko just to name a few. Suddenly, his 17-4-1 record looks really good, huh?

Silva’s most intriguing attribute is that he actually suffers from Giantism. Yup, that’s right, the dude is actually a giant. Silva doesn’t have the same number of impressive fights on his record. His standup is mediocre, and his BJJ is great.

It’s like these guys are looking in the mirror. It’s basically a toss up. It’s possible the BJJ cancels out, but I still think someone is going to tap.

Prediction: Werdum via submission

Gegard Mousasi v. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

Mousasi is one of the sports biggest rising stars. He trains with Fedor, which is always a good thing, and was really put on the American map by defeating Babalu Sobral in impressive fashion earlier in the year. He has a judo background, but what was really impressive was his standup. He put Babalu on his back and pounded him out quick. This may be a guy we are talking about as a top light heavyweight for a long time to come.

Sokoudjou came over from PRIDE with great fanfare and fought this guy named Lyoto Machida. He was arm triangled and lost, then beat Kazuhiro Nakamura, then lost to Luis Cane and was cut from the UFC. Since then, he’s gotten a couple of wins over heavyweights in DREAM’s Super Hulk tournament and lost to Babalu.

He’s a bit of a maddening case in the MMA world. He has all the physical skills in the world. He just never developed any kind of mental game. He just fights dumb at times, and it always ends up costing him. It will again tomorrow night.

Prediction: Mousasi via TKO

Jake Shields v. Jason “Mayhem” Miller

No welterweight not named GSP has the kind of momentum that Jake Shields has right now. The Ceasr Gracie jiu-jitsu specialist has won 10 straight fights including big name wins like Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley and Nick Thompson in the last three fights.

The only problem is that this fight is being held at middleweight. Will Shields be be strong enough to win at 185?

As for Miller, everyone knows his silly side from the MTV show, Bully Beatdown. However, people don’t realize how good of a fighter he is. His last fight was a no contest when he inadvertantly kicked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is the head with an illegal upkick, which caused a cut that stopped the fight. He’s got wins in the past of Tim Kennedy, and Robbie Lawler. He’s game is solid all around and, he has a chance to win because of the difference in strength between him and Shields.

This could be the best fight of the night.

Prediction: Shields via submission

Fedor Emelianenko v. Brett Rogers

Ahhh…Fedor. Finally on United States soil with a legit organization that will get him some decent fights. Here’s the long and short of Fedor. He’s awesome. He is 30-1 in a sport where upsets are commonplace. He has great power, fast hands, and a ground game that puts most BJJ practitioners to shame. It’s remarkable how good he is. He’s got wins over Big Nog, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, Mirko Cro Cop, and Andrei Arlovski just to name a few.

As for Brett Rogers, he’s more of a one trick pony. He has sick devastating knockout power in his hands and tighter boxing then Fedor does. However, tighter doesn’t mean more effective. He is going to have to keep this fight on the feet. Despite his recent destruction of Glass Joe Andrei Arlovski, he still has a way to go.

While Strikeforce has done a great job of making Rogers seem like a threat, he really isn’t all that much of one.

Prediction: Fedor via submission

J.J. Hardy Traded To Twins For Carlos Gomez…

Ok, What?

From Rotoworld:

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Brewers have traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for Carlos Gomez.

Hardy was a goner with the Brewers committing to Alcides Escobar at shortstop and the Twins have long been a rumored destination for him, so this deal makes sense. Gomez fell out of favor in Minnesota after arriving in the Johan Santana trade, but the speedy center fielder will be given a clear path to everyday playing time in Milwaukee as the replacement for free agent Mike Cameron. Nov. 6 – 11:57 am et

Okay, I get that J.J. Hardy was a goner. I get that they think that Alcides Escobar is the next big thing, but coouldn’t they do better than Carlos Gomez? Gomez has sick range in centerfield, but his bat really leaves something to be desired. How do you expect to run out a centerfielder who hits .246/.292/.346 and expect to make the Playoffs?

This just goes back to certain teams obsession with speed and defense. While Gomez is a great defender, does that lineup have enough pop in it with Ryan J. Braun and Prince Fielder to just give up an out in the lineup?

As for Hardy, he was a +5 win player in his heyday. The Twins want him to just get back to about half that. His .229/.350/.357 was accompanied by a 45 pont drop in his BABIP. There’s reason to beleive that he will improve, and regain some semblance of his previous form.

In short, the Twins got better, and the Brewers fans are likely to be really pissed by May.

Madden Ultimate Team Announced, Can A New Game Mode Replace Franchise?

We here at this site were really disappointed by the franchise mode in Madden this year. While it’s understood that this year’s Madden development team was fixing what was essentially a broken game, certain things really screwed it up. For me, the biggest thing was the screwed up simulation stats and the pre-set player progression system really killed it.

Well, EA Sports is pulling something new out of it’s bag with Madden Ultimate Team. Check it out:

It seems like a really good idea. Maybe this is the thing that will keep me playing Madden into Febuary. It also seems like it’s ripe for creation of what is basically a Madden fantasy league.

Another New GSP Affliction Shirt!

Jesus, how many of these can Affliction put out in a six month span? This is the THIRD new Georges St. Pierre shirt since Affliction stopped promoting MMA events.

That doesn’t make this one any less cool though.

I love the color combination of the red and the black. As usual, they find a way to get the Fleur de lis on the French Canadian’s shirts.

It’s available at MMA Warehouse for 57.99

Looking for more GSP gear? It’s in The 3rd String Store.

Good Stuff Tonight...

I try not to be one of “those fans” – you know, the type who sulks and glooms and says the team is horrible after a loss, but they’re the first one to chant “We Want the Cup” after a convincing win.

However, tonight was a good game. The difference between Edmonton and Vancouver, between 1,160 kilometers or 721 miles (thank you, Google Maps), was the offense. It was firing tonight. They took advantage of power plays. (The 0% on the power play was misleading in Vancouver, by the way. Chris Higgins scored a second after one expired.) They swarmed the net. They passed well. But more importantly, they took shots. Take a shot, you never know what will happen.

They had 23 shots in Vancouver – 14 in the second period and then 9 combined in periods 1 and 3. Tonight, they had 39. Phil Esposito always says – and I’m sure Alex Ovechkin will concur – you can’t score if you don’t shoot. Dan Girardi had a great pass/shot today that Sean Avery deflected. It didn’t go in, but it was close. Get the puck to the net. If they don’t get the puck to the net, Marian Gaborik doesn’t one-hand that last goal home.

The effort was definitely there tonight…

Aaron Voros - Horrible 1st period, but he did play better in the 2nd and 3rd… saving his job for another day. Granted, he probably only had another 3 minutes all game, but they were better than his first minute, where he took 2 penalties. When he swung his stick at an Oilers’ knees (can’t remember which Oiler) and took a two-minute minor, did you see how *shocked* he was? How could he be surprised! It looked like he was cutting down a tree!

(By the way, I’ve never used the two asterisks on a word before in my life.)

Brian Boyle – Good ol’ T-Bone. How many open nets can a man miss in one period? The answer, it seems, is two… twice. But he had a few good shots, a couple of good hits, and played like a 4th line player should: Good enough for the coach not to be nervous to put you out on the ice.

Chris Higgins - I won’t profess him a great pickup yet, although we’re all happy he is here instead of Scott Gomez. However, isn’t it amazing how much better he is playing since he scored one goal? He has another goal already and played inspired, tough hockey tonight. If only he would do a move on a breakaway. Every time he gets one, he just shoots, and so far, it hasn’t worked.

Ryan Callahan – “Gritty.” Good word to describe his play tonight, as far as most nights.

Brandon Dubinsky – Was he even out there tonight? I noticed his play as much as I noticed Healthy Scratch Donald Brashear.

Wade Redden & Michal Rozsival – Weak games as well. Redden reminds me of myself, when I was 9. Any time I got the puck, I would get scared and pass it to the nearest teammate. That’s what he does. Don’t believe the hype in his “great pass to spring Higgins on a breakaway.” It was lucky, he was just clearing it. And Rozsival? For a defender, he sure doesn’t defend. I wouldn’t want him on my team during an autumnal game of capture the flag, let alone near my crease in an NHL game.

Steve Valiquette – The team played good in front of him – especially Girardi and Marc Staal. It was huge for him to win this game, especially after the Sharks game where he got shellacked. Now, like Boyle, John Tortorella should feel safe putting him into a game.

Now, let’s not be overly optimistic. Edmonton is a mediocre team. They were .500 going into tonight, and they were on a slide. Sheldon Souray is hurt, significantly impacting their power play. Mike Comrie was sick. A lot of other players got hit with the flu bug also the past 10 days.

So, what did the Rangers really do? They beat up on a weak team. And sometimes, that’s just what you need to get back on track. Now, let’s see if they can keep up the pace against the 9-4-1 Flames, who suddenly are an offensive team.

(By the way, I love these 9:30 games. I leave work at 8:20, clean up, eat, and I’m ready for pre-game and the opening faceoff.)
