Cro-Cop Not Done, To Take On Rothwell In Austraila?

As 3SS IT guy Alex Goldberg might say “Oy Vey.”

It turns out that despite all the talk of Mirko Cro Cop being finished as a fighter, he might return to take on Ben Rothwell down under. Here’s MMA Weekly’s take.

It appears that the question of whether or not Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic would retire following his dismantling at the hands of a much younger Junior dos Santos at UFC 103.

MMAWeekly.com late Wednesday night learned from sources close to the bout that Filipovic will likely return to the Octagon at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia, to face Ben Rothwell. The bout has not yet been signed.

At 35 years of age, Filipovic (25-7-2) was manhandled in his UFC return in Dallas, where he verbally submitted under a barrage of punches from dos Santos in the third round. He contemplated his career following that bout, questioning whether or not he could get over a “mental block” when fighting in a cage. The greatest successes of his career coming in the Pride ring in Japan.

Cro Cop looked real old when he fought Junior Dos Santos. I don’t think it was fighting in a cage that’s the problem as much as it is the fighting without any help from altered body chemistry.

I’m just not so sure that he has anything left. Rothwell was dominated by prospect Cain Velasquez in his UFC debut. He would look likely be the favorite going into this fight. Even if he wants to stand and strike with Cro Cop, he’s younger, and faster than the Croatian.

UFC 108: Lesnar Out, Cain v. Big Nog In…

So, apparently we all jumped the gun when we said that Brock Lesnar had the swine flu and that’s why he had to pull out of his UFC 106 matchup with Shane Carwin.

Turns out he’s got something worse. Mono. MMA Weekly brings us the following.

Just when the situation couldn’t get any worse… it did.

When Brock Lesnar pulled out of UFC 106 due to illness, most everyone hoped that he had a severe case of influenza and would recover in time to defend his title against Shane Carwin at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas.

Carwin will still get his shot, but the latest news on Lesnar, that he has mononucleosis, will push it back even further, to an uncertain date.

“Guys, my manager, Jason Genet, just told me that UFC 108 is not happening. Brock has mono and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned the title shot, but I have to wait for the titleholder,” Carwin wrote in the blog on his official website Wednesday night.

UFC president Dana White later confirmed Lesnar’s diagnosis to Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole, indicating that the UFC heavyweight champion would be unable to train for the next four to six weeks, effectively scrapping any chance at a Jan. 2 date.

Listen, I’ve had mono. It sucks. That would explain all the weight loss that people were talking about with Lesnar. However, it does leave UFC 108, which is supposed to be one of the biggest cards of the year, with Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva as a main event. Unless this happens

The list of UFC heavyweight title contenders may get a little shorter come Jan. 2… IF a bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez comes together. The fight is being worked on for UFC 108 in Las Vegas.

MMAWeekly.com sources on Wednesday initially confirmed that the bout, reported by Tatame.com as confirmed by “Nogueira’s manager” to SportTV, had been agreed to. Following our initial report, however, additional sources injected some skepticism into the situation.

It appears that certain parties involved want the bout to happen, while others do not, leaving its current status up in the air.

If it does take place, the winner between Nogueira and Velasquez would likely get the next shot at the UFC heavyweight championship.

I would LOVE to see this fight. With Nog looking as good as he did in Japan in his last fight against Randy Couture, this would finally provide the real test of where Cain Velasquez stands at this moment. Is he ready for Lesnar? I don’t think so, but if anyone can be a good litmus test, It’s Minotauro.

Again, it’s not certain, but that has to be some truth to it if MMA Weekly is on top of it.
