Why Are Mets Fans Rooting For The Phillies?

This really makes no sense. Mets fans, you need a serious fan intervention.

I know this World Series match up is the worst thing that you could have imagined when the season started six months ago. If you knew this would have happened back in April, you guys probably wouldn’t have bothered to even show up. Hell, I know a Met fan that has denounced baseball and claims that “he’s ready for the season to just be over.”

I get that this season didn’t go as planned. I get the Mets fans who are abstaining from rooting interest in this series. I even get those Met fans that are refrain from watching the series. If it’s that painful, then I won’t ask you to watch.

The Mets fans that annoy me are the ones who are choosing to support their division rival rather than their big brother from across town. I really need someone to explain this to me.

I know that Mets fans are far more anti-Yankee than most Yankee fans are anti-Met. I know that Mets fans have this “little brother” complex that keeps them awake at night. All they want is to prove that they can hang with their big brother and all his cool, older friends in the American League, but they can’t. They are always exposed for what they are. The cute red-headed little brother in the coke bottle glasses that still has a ton of growing up to do.

If the Yanks are the big brother in this little analogy, that would make the Phillies the neighborhood bully. For the last few years, they’ve dragged the Mets around the playground, and winning a championship last year didn’t make the situation any better. This season, with the Mets being pathetically awful, there was never a chance that the little redheaded kid was going snap and blindside the bully with a two by four when he least expected.

Now, here comes big brother to save the day. After the Phillies have ruled the playground for over a year, the Yankees are coming to take back what is rightfully theirs. The World Series has been exclusive property of the Yanks since it’s inception. They’ve occasionally let other teams borrow it, but no one has ever kept it for more than a little while.

So, why can’t the Mets put aside sibling rivalry and just enjoy watching the Phils get punched in the face? That’s whats going to happen. The Phillies are the Yankees-lite. They have good pitching, but Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee are not C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. They have a good closer, but compare Brad Lidge to Mariano Rivera and you’re likely to get whacked by a guido in a Jeter jersey. They have a nice little lineup, but it pales in comparison to the Yanks absolutely deadly batting order.

So, why are the Mets fans going to sit here and rain on the Yankee parade and cheer for the team that they should hate most in the entire world? Did Jet fans root for the Patriots against the Giants in 2007? Nope. Would Giant fans want the Eagles to get a Super Bowl ring over the Jets? Absolutely not. That’s called having a common enemy.

So, Met fans, release the hate. Admit that your are just mad with your station in life as the Yankees adorable little brother that no one really cares about. If you can’t do that, don’t expect big brother to include you in the celebration after he wipes the floor with the bully that spend his days beating on you.

I honestly don’t care who wins this series. But if the Phillies win, at least I don’t have to hear about it at work the next day like I will have to do if the Yankees win. And that’s the big problem with the Yankees – their fans (not all of them, just the obnoxious ones). It’s not enough for Yankee fans to support a winning team – instead, they have to constantly remind you of how great the Yankees are and throw “26 rings baby!” in your face all the time. And when the Yankees aren’t winning, these people have nothing to say. I also hate that Yankee fans have bashed A-Rod for the longest time, but now love him because he’s had a few clutch hits. Not that Phillies (or Mets fans, for that matter) are much better. But this is actually a pretty likable Yankees team. If they weren’t called the Yankees, everyone would be saying how scrappy they are and how they never quit. It’s a shame that a bunch of loudmouthed braggarts have to spoil that.

im glad i inspired your column…

But I don’t want any part of your champagne or parade. Your the older brother that was a DB and never asked us to do anything with you. Thus, we never asked for any assistance with a bully. The only way we can mature is to beat the bully ourselves and not ask someone who is too good for everyone else and who can’t make it home to mom’s pork chops or little sis’ viola recital. I get it, your out there partying getting cheap drinks with the boys.

We’ll take care of the bully next year and defend our monkey bars in the park ourselves…

    Mets 2010! The countdown begins…

      Matt,

I think you took the analogy a little bit too far.

I just don’t get why you have to hate so much. At least Wilson gave me a list of reasons. For you to tell me that its just better to watch your rival win because you don’t want to see the Yankees win because you know Yankee fans that will be happy is just drinking haterade.

    Met Fan here. Simple explanation.

Can’t stand Girardi. To paraphrase Mike Francesa, giving credit to Girardi is “hogwash. Many, many managers could have rolled the ball out and won with this team.” To see him make rake in endorsement dollars for his overmanaging a WS win would be so unjust.

Can’t stand A-Rod. Yes, greatest player of his generation. He’s been so deeply insecure, that it makes it very, very easy to root against him. Although credit is deserved for this year, my fingers are crossed that the guy never gets a ring.

Rooting as hard as possible for the Phillies. So much more gratifying to see an underdog win than the Evil Empire (who outspends everyone by 30 percent).

(Not to mention something I can’t stand about both the Mets and the Yankees–taking tax-free bonds to build a stadium and then pricing out long-time ticket holders. It’s a free market, they can charge what they wish–but pricing out loyal, long-time season ticket holders as the Mets, Yanks, Giants, Jets have done is an abomination. Maybe all four don’t deserve it anytime soon for that reason alone. And I’m a Mets/Giants fan, so I see all sides of that one)

      Wilson,

Fantastic comment. Seriously. I see so many people here who just love to curse and say stupid things that it makes me smile when someone is that insightful.

As a Yankee fan, I’m not Girardi’s biggest fan either. I’m not a fan of giving managers in baseball credit whatsoever. Managers don’t win you games. If anything, they can only lose you games by over managing.

As far as the Evil Empire thing, The Mets play in this city too. They have a big ass payroll too, but they remind me of the Yankees from 02-07, they just gave it all to guys like Delgado, and Luis Castillo.

As sad as it is, the stadium thing is just the way that life in the Big Apple is right now. We can all hope it gets better, but it probably won’t. I know plenty of Giants season tickets holders who are giving up their seats because they just can’t pay for them.
