Fantasy Football Recap: Week 1

I wrote a blog about James Davis and it got roughly 18 bagillion hits (but whose counting?)  It made Anthony angry for several reasons: 1) He hates when I succeed (and after all who can blame him, I can barely write let alone chew gum and walk at the same time) 2) It’s James Freakin’ Davis…Really?  At least that’s what Anthony sounds like in my head.

So since Fantasy Football is kinda popular, I decided I’d roll out a weekly yet to be named fantasy blog.

Annnnnd away we go!

Jump Off The Ledge:

Kurt Warner – In a word, Warner looked old against the 49ers. Then again I guess that’s what happens when your a 38 year old QB and have major hip surgery. I say Warner plays no more then 8 games this year, especially if that O-Line is as porous as it seems.

LaDainian Tomlinson – I think it might be safe to say LDT might be damn near done. Look it’s not his fault, the NFL is a young man’s game and  LDT has a lot of wear and tare on his 30 year old body. It’s also safe to say that, despite his injury, the Chargers were just a better offense with Darren Sproles lined up in the backfield. If you can get a Ray Rice caliber back for him in a trade it’s one you should make.

Matt Forte - Forte is another guy I’ve been down on from Day 1. Why? Because his NFL numbers weren’t anywhere near his fantasy numbers. This is a guy that was a RB/FB tweener coming out of the draft and only managed 3.8 yards per carry last year. He was a fantasy force because the Bears offense was awful last year and he racked up a ton of catches on check-downs. Guess what, that ain’t happening again this year. Cutler is going to look to throw deep and the Bears offensive-line isn’t very good. Bust year for Forte and to a lesser extent Cutler.

DeAngelo Williams - Again it’s not so much production as it is getting what you paid for. If D’Will is on your fantasy team odds are you used a top 10 pick on him. And odds are J-Stewart is going to drive you nuts this year if you own D’Will. D’Will had 14 carries in Week 1, J-Stew had 11. This isn’t just a one week thing and when you factor in the Panthers offense might just be terrible…well it’s troubling to say the least.

Clinton Portis – I really like Portis. He’s one of the most complete RB’s in the NFL in therms of running, catching and blocking. By all means he’s the ideal fit in a west coast offense…it just seems that Head Coach Jim Zorn inexplicably hates him. There’s no other way to explain a 49% to 39% split of offensive snaps between him and Ladell Betts. Portis will still have his games, but you drafted him to be a workhorse and he simply won’t be that this year.

Michael Turner – The curse of 370 is real and Turner is just another victim. 22 Carries for 65 yards but the big story is that it was at home. Last year Turner averaged 5.1 per carry at home and 3.9 away. Just saying.

Steve Smith – I’d be hard to sell low on Smith right because honestly who would be buying. If your a Smith owner you just need to pray Jake Delhome can get his head out of his ass.

Don’t Jump!

Andre Johnson – Being guarded by either Champ Bailey, Darelle Revis or Nnamdi Asomugha is a reason to bench any WR.  Yes, even someone as good as Andre Johnson.  Don’t worry about AJ…he and the Texan offense will be just fine.

Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton, Kevin Walter - See above

Calvin Johnson - As bad as the Lions offense was last year don’t forget that Calvin was still golden last year.  Matt Sttaford will struggle but he’s got a big arm and will be able to put it up for Calvin to catch.

A Look Ahead:
Waiver Wire Pickups:

Cadillac Williams, Mike Bell, Joe Flacco, Nate Burleson, Mark Sanchez (in deeper and two QB leagues), Brent Celek, Kevin Faulk (in PPR formats)

Safe To Drop:

Earnest Graham, Chris Henry, Sammy Morgan, Kevin Curtis, Michael Crabtree, Tedd Ginn Jr., Shonn Greene, Chris Chambers, Mushin Muhammed

Favorable Week 2 Matchups!

QB: P. Manning @ Miami, Farve @ Detroit, Orton Vs. Cleveland, Garrad Vs. Arizona, Edwards Vs. Tampa

Sleeper Of The Week:  Mark Sanchez vs NE.  New England’s defense might be a bust this year, especially without Mayo. In a shot out Sanchez could rack up the points.

RB: A. Peterson vs. Cleveland, Westbrook Vs. New Orleans, C. Johnson Vs. Huston, F. Jackson Vs. Tampa, Rice @ San Diego

Sleeper Of The Week: Leon Washington Vs. New England.  Like him in space vs. the Pats D more then T. Jones.  Big week for Leon especially in PPR formats.

WR: C. Johnson Vs. Minesota, Brandon Marshall Vs. Cleveland, Wes Welker @ New York Jets (PPR a must), Santonio Holmes/Hines Ward @ Chicago, Owens/Evans Vs. Tampa

Sleeper Of The Week: Antwan Randell El Vs. St. Louis.  Quietly had 7 for 98 in an unfavorable match up agaisnt the G-Men.  Home vs. a poor St. Louis defense that’s in transition he’s quietly an excellent match up play this week.

Avoid: Randy Moss, it’s ballsy to bench Moss but I’d be wary about how the Jets match up against the Pats.  If Revis is on Moss expect Welker, Watson and Faulk to get a lot of the catches.

Avoid: Dewayne Bowe, one word Nnamdi.  He’s like Madonna.

Avoid: Braylon Edwards, Drops + Brady Quinn + Champ Bailey = Do Not Start.

Recap: Rangers Preseason Opener

At 4:03 AM, the sound of my cell phone woke me up. Immediately, I knew it was Zach.

At least once a week, I wake up to a late-night text from this site’s co-conspirator. It’s fun, mostly because I usually sleep through them and they’re often humorous. One time, Zach texted me at 3 AM to ask me how to change lines in NHL 09. Zach’s off in Vegas, so I wasn’t expecting to hear from him, but he said he had his buddy Dan do a write-up of last night’s Rangers-Bruins pre-season game for our site. I turned on the game with about a minute left, just in time to hear the entire broadcast crew gush over Matt Gilroy, so I’ll take Dan’s word for what happened.

And here, my friends, is (I think) the first guest post we’ve ever done on this site – a look at the Rangers’ first pre-season game, completely unedited, courtesy of Dan.

***

Pre-season game 1 summary: Bos. 2 – NY 1
-Valliquette started and already looked in mid-season form, stopped 18 of 19 including some pretty tough shots (Torts plans on him getting about 15-20 starts this year)

-Brian Boyle (even with his 6’7″ frame) did not impress, took two dumb penalties in the 1st period, one lead to the B’s first goal

-Brashear was booed heavily the first time he touched the puck, but it lessened as the game went on, esp. after he flattened a Bruin and got some cheers

-Dane Byers hustled, had some good forechecks and didn’t take any stupid penalties like his linemate Boyle, but that was about it

-Alexei Semenov (the kid from San Jose getting a tryout) looked ok, he is massive which means he’s not the quickest guy in the world (Scotty Hockey called him a “traffic cone” on ice), but he cruched a few B’s and got an assist on the only goal by wristing a shot from the point, so there’s maybe some 7th D-man potential

-the Brighton Beach line of Lisin-Anisimov-Grachev looked comfortable together, fast, and aggressive to the net (especially Grachev, Sam & Joe feel he’ll be on the roster), during one hard forecheck in the 2nd they drew a penalty

-Gilroy and DelZotto got the most of my attention, especially on the PP, they both love to jump in the play (with the encouragement of Torts), and don’t hesitate to unload a shot if they have it (Gilroy had about 3-4 shots, DelZotto hit the post on the PP)

-Kotalik will be a point-man on the PP this year, has a rocket shot and fires at will, his pairing on the PP was DelZotto

-Matt Zaba took over in net for Vally around half-way through the 2nd period, made some very good saves also, and wasn’t at fault for the 2nd goal, (defense vacated the crease to go to the corner and hung him out to dry vs. an open man)

-Matt Maccarone (another bruiser) hustled and such, but I had to laugh at the retro 1970’s pornstar mustache he was sporting

-Higgins got our only goal by camping out at the crease and banging in the rebound of Semenov’s shot, he was on a line with Drury and Kotalik for most of the game

-the Rangers came out and controlled play early in the 1st, but then they took 4 penalties which killed their momentum for the rest of the period, they took 6 total in the game (which led to both goals allowed), the B’s were only called for 2 penalties

-MSG showed a taped interview with Sather addressing the Dubi situation, and he basically said that Dubi has no leverage and will have to either give in and accept whatever offer he gets by the RFA deadline or he won’t be playing at all this year, (they also had Boston’s GM live in the studio at intermission talking about Kessel, pretty much the same thing going on up in Beantown)

-Rangers play the Devils wed. night at the Rock, Lundqvist will play half of the game, no mention of who gets the other half (Wiikman? OchoCinco?)

-players who sat out against the B’s and most likely playing against the Devs:
Prospal, Redden, Rosy, Voros, Avery, Potter, Heikkenen, Kundratek

-Gaborik already has a sore groin (go figure), so not sure yet if he’s going to play

UFC Fight Night 19 Predictions: The Main Card!

Nate Quarry v. Tim Credeur

This battle between two TUF alumni is the perfect opening for this card. Let’s be honest: neither of these guys is ever going to make a run at the crown that Anderson Silva currently has a vice-like grip on. However, it should be interesting to watch these two get in the ring and mix it up.

Quarry is famous for being knocked out by Rich Franklin in astonishing fashion in the only title shot he’d likely ever get. Since then he’s 3-1 with the only loss coming to the previously undefeated Demian Maia. The problem is that none of the wins are all that impressive eithier: Pete “Drago” Sell, Jason McDonald, and Kalib Starnes. He’s likely try to keep this fight on the feet and out box Credeur. If he can, this fight won’t go three rounds, and might end in devastating fashion.

Credeur is famous for spouting off some words about being a warrior or a samurai or something on season seven of TUF. Oh, and for buying the youthful Matt Riddle a Xbox 360 with his five grand bonus. Since the show, Credeur is 3-0 including his last win coming over personal favorite Nick Catone. If Credeur does win, you could say that he’s earned a little bit better competition, but he shouldn’t move up the ladder too far. In this fight, he has the advantage on the ground with eight submission wins to his credit. If the fight goes to the ground, it won’t go three rounds, and Credeur will walk away victorious.

Prediction: Credeur via Submission

Carlos Condit v. Jake Ellenberger

Ugh. This fight could have been so awesome. It was supposed to be Condit taking on the perpetually crazy/blue collar Chris Lytle, but Lytle got hurt and had to pull out. Instead, we get Ellenberger who is no slouch, but stylistically this fight isn’t as fun as it once was.

Condit is a former WEC phenom who was pulled over when Zuffa and the UFC took over the west coast based promotion. His first UFC fight was a split decision loss against Martin Kampmann who was supposed to fight Mike Swick for the Welterweight #1 contendership on Saturday at UFC 103. Condit is an unbeleiveable striker with a ton of potential, but we are all waiting for him to take his game to next level.

Ellenberger is going to be making his UFC debut, so expect the UFC jitters to be in full effect. He does have some big time experience having fought in Bellator as well as in the IFL. He’s a wrestler from Team Quest, so expect him to try and take Condit down. Instead of getting to see a striking war, we’ll all get a chance to check out Condit’s takedown defense which is an important facet of the game if you want to be a striker in the UFC.

Prediction: Condit via TKO

Gray Maynard v. Roger Huerta

I say this all the time, but how good is the UFC’s lightweight division? Here is a fight between two top-7 contenders, and it’s the headlining fight of a Fight Night because there are so many other guys to put on pay-per-view.

Gray Maynard may be the one of the best pound for pound wrestlers in MMA. He has developed a pretty fantastic wrestling base that is designed for use in the octagon rather than on the wrestling mat. Since appearing on TUF 5, he has extended his record to 7-0 with wins over Frankie Edgar, Rich Clementi and Jim Miller. If Maynard wins this fight, we can throw him in with the top-5 of the lightweights.

Huerta is a head case. We know this. This is his last UFC fight before he leaves the game to become an actor. He became famous when he and Leonard Garcia had a war that led to them getting on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Since then, he has been he has raised his record to 7-1 in the UFC, but lost his last fight to Kenny Florian, and almost lost to Clay Guida before that. Huerta has some wrestling, but is mostly a striker. I’m not sure that his takedown defense is good enough to keep him off his back, and thats why I’m taking Maynard.

Prediction: Maynard via Unanimous Decision

Nate Diaz v. Melvin Guillard

Ah, the Diaz Brothers. Everything about them recently seems to be a joke. Whether it be Nick Diaz’s pot saga, or Nate Diaz’s terrible performance against Joe Stevenson at the TUF 9 Finale, nothing seems to be going right for them. Things aren’t going to get easier tonight for Nate as the Cesar Gracie black belt takes on Melvin Guillard.

We all know what we get with Nate Diaz. He has world class jiu-jitsu. He has awful boxing, and awful wrestling. He’s going to attempt a standing kimura at least four times during this fight. Diaz drives me crazy because I love BJJ, but at a certain point you have to know that if you don’t know how to round out your game, you are going to lose. Diaz also missed weight yesterday and had to take a second chance at it to make 155 lbs.

Guillard is a much more well rounded fighter. He’s a freak athlete which is his real strength as well as a strong wrestler. His game is well balanced enough that he has a bunch of wins by both submission and by knockout. The big question with Guillard has been the mental game. Can he prevent himself from getting in his own way? He already has a cocaine arrest on his record and has shown up out of shape before. He looks to be in good shape, so let’s hope that he’s got all that behind.

Expect Guillard to taking Diaz down, and then ground and pound his way to a victory.

Prediction: Guillard via Unanimous Decision

Frank Trigg’s UFC 103 Walk-Out Tee!

The return of Frank Trigg has hardly set the MMA world ablaze. Let’s be honest, this is the same guy that appeared on VH1’s Kept. However, Frank used to have his own MMA clothing line called Triggonomics. Now, he’s shut that down and signed on with Silver Star for his fight Saturday against welterweight contender Josh Koscheck.

Silver Star Frank Trigg Premium Tee

It’s a bit of a change. Personally, I’m still trying to find a way to work the word Triggonomics into to everyday sentences. That being said, It’s a Silver Star shirt. So, it’s pretty awesome. The iron cast looking TF in the middle is just about as awesome as it gets.
