Kimbo Slice: “I Could Smash That Dude”

Ever wonder how Kimbo feels about his loss to Seth Petruzelli?  Kimbo recently sat down with ESPN to talk about that fight, TUF and his career.

For such a supposedly, nasty rugged street fight Kimbo is pretty well spoken.  If you just listened to the audio you would never imagine the guy speaking is the same guy who made his living off back yard brawls and bouncing for porno websites.  I kid you not.

And though Kimbo manages to sound humble at times I can’t buy his logic when it comes to his loss to Petruzelli.  As Kimbo puts it after Shamrock (his original opponent) was unable to fight he “checked out mentally” and that the Petruzelli loss doesn’t haunt him because he “knows he can beat him now, even with one hand tied behind his back.”  For a guy who has proved absolutely nothing inside a cage, and out of the streets, that just seems like a bunch of bull.

I welcome Slice to this year cast of TUF but I can’t see him going very far.  The difference between Slice and Lesnar is that Lesnar is actually an athlete.  Lesnar is a decorated collegiate wrestler, Slice is a decorated street brawler.  Big difference.

My prediction?  Slice wins one fight on TUF (somehow…wink wink…drawing the worst opponent) and gets submitted in his second fight.  After that Slice will enjoy facing an array of C level stand-up fighters (including an obvious rematch against Petruzelli) on UFC fight nights.

The hardcore MMA fans can complain all they want but the ratings will justify the UFC’s decision.  Like it or not Slice is a license to print money.

Matt Barkley Practices

From ESPN:

Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley participated in No. 3 Southern California’s light practice Monday, but didn’t do any throwing drills while resting his sore shoulder.
Barkley
Safety Taylor Mays skipped practice to rest his injured right knee.
Barkley bruised his right shoulder during last weekend’s 18-15 victory at Ohio State, and he was limited to handing off Monday. Sophomore Aaron Corp, who lost the starting job to Barkley in training camp, took snaps with the first-team offense.

If I’m Peter Carroll I sit Matt Barkley this week. New coach or not, I tend to think that Aaron Corp can handle Washington this week. No need to risk Barkley injuring himself further in this type of game.

But while we’re on the subject, how impressive has the freshman been in his first two career starts? While the numbers may not necessarily be there (only 60% completion rate and one touchdown pass), he’s shown that he has tremendous poise and knowledge that has come to be expected of USC quarterbacks. All you had to watch was that final drive on Saturday night to see that Barkley has something special.

Numbers in college football can be easily manufactured. Late game moxie and smarts can’t be. Barkley has the latter, the numbers will come soon enough.

Don’t look now, but we are about to watch yet another special USC quarterback for a few years to come.

UFC Ultimate Fight Night 19 Predictions: The Undercard

Ryan Jensen v. Steve Steinbess

There seems to be some people out there who think that Steve Steinbess deserves a legit chance at at main card fight. I don’t know why, but they are out there. He’s got no quality wins on his record and his last loss was to Carmelo Marrero at WEC 36. That just screams legit to me. I’m being sarcastic.

Jensen is a similar guy as he has faced tough competition at times but beat any of them. This fight will be a lot like Highlander; There can only be one. Since these guys are so similar, the UFC can’t afford to keep both of them on the roster.

In the cage, Jensen will seek to submit Steinbess. There is no secret there as he has achieved nine victories via submission. Steinbess is more of a striker and needs to focus on staying on the feet to avoid the ground game of Jensen. At the end of the day, I simply think Steinbess is the better fighter. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s ready for the spotlight.

Prediction: Steve Steinbess via TKO

Brock Larson v. Mike Pierce

What in god’s name does Brock Larsen have to do? He’s really a whole lot better than anyone would know because the UFC and even the WEC haven’t pushed him nearly enough. Of course, we all know that Larsen defeated Paulo Filho for the WEC belt, but the fight was non-title because Filho didn’t make weight. He’s 26-2, and has his last lost was to Carlos Condit. That’s a nice record. Yet, here he is on the undercard.

Pierce is making his UFC debut and we all know about the UFC jitters that go along with that. He is 8-1, but lacks a signature win. This is not an easy first test for Pierce, and I expect him to sucumb to the pressure, as well as Larson’s myriad skills.

Larson via submission

Jeremy Stephens v. Justin Buchholz

People with the last name Buchholz need to decide on one spelling. One “h” or two. Make up your minds.

Anyway, both of these lightweights are likely on their last chances with the UFC. Both have mediocre records and lost their last fight to sub-par fighters. In the stacked lightweight division, it’s going to be hard for eithier of these guys to make any sort of headway.

Stephens is on a two fight losing streak to Gleison Tibau and the underrated Joe Lauzon. He’s a muay thai and BJJ fighter, but feels most comfortable on his feet on most of his wins have come by knockout.

Buchholz beat personal favorite Corey Hill, but last lost to Terry Etim, who is not all that great. He’s 1-2 in the UFC and needs the win badly. He has a balanced game, and I think that his ground game will lead to him winning the fight.

Prediction: Stephens via Submission

Sam Stout v. Phillipe Nover

I really love Phillipe Nover. He was absolutely robbed by Yves Lavigne’s early stoppage at UFC 98 and now has to win on Wednesday to remain relevant. He’s lost his last two fights, one against TUF 8 winner Efrain EdcusderoNover has a good all-around game, but in this fight his advantage will be on the ground. He was recently awarded his black belt in BJJ and this fight is the time to put it to use.

Stout is famous for his wars with Spencer Fisher where the two of them stood in the middle of the ring and tried to punch each other in the face as many times as they could. However, the reason that happened is that neither of these guys have any sort of ground game. Nover should be able to take Stout down and submit him easily.

Prediction: Nover via Submission

C.B. Dolloway v. Jay Silva

I still can’t forgive C.B. Dolloway for being submitted by Tom Lawlor. Lawlor isn’t good by any stretch of the imagination, but I can’t help but feel like that fight was a huge fluke. Dolloway has a ton of potential and elite type skills. His world class wrestling, he’s the master of the Peruvian necktie and his striking is improving as he trains with Arizona Combat Sports.

Silva is making his UFC debut and see my speech about Mike Pierce for my feelings on that. He is a former Ring of Combat alumni, so he’s got that going for him. However, I just can’t see him beating Dolloway.

Prediction: Dolloway via unanimous decision

Chris Wilson v. Mike Pyle

Wilson is 1-2 in the UFC, and last lost to John Howard. However, his first loss was to an up and coming Jon Fitch. All three of his fights have ended with decisions. He trains with the Team Quest, so you know his wrestling is solid.

Mike Pyle made his UFC debut and ran into a real good fighter in Brock Larson. Now, he will be fight for his UFC life on Wednesday. His best shot is to keep to fight standing and use his muay thai to finish the fight.

Prediction: Pyle via knockout

Brian Stann v. Steve Cantwell

This is the trilogy fight of one of the best series in the WEC history. Stann and Cantwell have had a couple of great ones, and here’s the video to prove it.

Expect a similar fight. There are evenly matched. People love Brian Stann because he is a former member of the marines, but I think that we are going to see Cantwell win the trilogy.

Prediction: Cantwell via TKO

Eagles RT Shawn Andrews Done For Season!

Wow, these injuries just keep mounting, huh?

From Rotoworld:

Eagles placed RT Shawn Andrews (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.
It’s a big blow to the Eagles’ offense. When healthy and motivated, Andrews is one of the best linemen around. Now they’ll have to go with Winston Justice at right tackle, who is much-improved but will still need backs and tight ends to chip for him. Jon Runyan is still available and could be an Eagle before long. Andrews’ career is in jeopardy.

I don’t care how good the team feels about Winston Justice. This is still the same guy that gave up 12 sacks in one game to Osi Umeniyora. Andrews value as a dominating run blocker in that system can’t be overstated. Not to mention the fact that the Eagles play in the best pass rushing division in the league, so he will be missed in the passing game as well.

Uh-oh, Michael Vick is a lefty. Anyone excited for Justice to protect his blindside?

Puz Out; Can The Bills Survive?

Just finishing up some loose ends before I go to bed for the night. Here’s one that I came across much earlier: How can the Bills deal with the loss of Paul Posluszny?

Buffalo middle linebacker Paul Posluszny was having a nice night for the Bills as they continue to give the Patriots all they can handle (and more) in Foxborough. He had a team-high six first-half tackles and was plenty capable in coverage down the middle of the field against the Patriots’ crossing routes.

But now his night is over. It was just announced in the press box (and likely to the national TV audience) that Posluszny is done for the game with an arm injury.

The national radio broadcast said the injury was in fact a broken arm. If that’s true, he will likely miss a good chunk of time.

The Bills defense kept the potent Pats offense in check for most of the game, and as soon as Puz went down they started running more routes through the middle of the field. Notice who scored the two touchdowns? Ben Watson, the Patriots tight end. In the Bills cover-2-esque scheme, Posluszny would have been responsible for the deep middle of the field.

While the Bills looked better than anyone expected, the question now becomes can they survive without one of their defensive leaders? If you know anything about the cover-2, you know that an athletic middle linebacker has to be able to drop back and cover the deep middle for the system to work. Now, the Bills don’t have that. It would seem that we’ve discovered yet another possible landing spot for Derrick Brooks.

So, The Bills defense we saw today may have been an illusion.

Bas Rutten Wants Kids To Grow A Sack…

I saw this on CageWriter, and I literally laughed my ass off for twenty minutes.

It appears that Cartoon Network is trying to push kids to get active. What better way to do this than to enlist MMA legend and all around bad-ass Bas Rutten?

It’s a great cause, but Bas is just too funny. Check out the last couple of seconds when the last kid passes out. Look at Bas’ body language that says “I’m sorry sir, but now, I’m going to break your leg.”
