Florian Vs. Guida At UFC 107!

Kenny Florian and Clay Guida have agreed to fight at UFC 107 according to MMAWeekly.

Is that Clay Guida or former WWF superstar Raven?

Both fighters are coming off losses, Florian against Penn and Guida against Sanchez.  Stylistically this should be a very exciting fight as both guys love to scrap and always come to fight.  Florian will likely try to keep the fight standing where has a significant striking advantage (although as we learned during Guida/Sanchez he’s a tough dude to K.O.)  Guida will likely try to clinch, dirty box (to avoid leg kicks) and try to take down Florian.  The key to this fight may very well be the battle between Guidas submission defense and Kenny’s submission offense.

It’s hard to predict a winner in this fight but I know that the fans will be winners for sure.

Alright that was really corny…you try to think of a better line to the end the post.

A New Look For Wanderlei Silva?

Do you recognize this man?

Believe it or not that’s Wanderlei Silva. Silva recently had facial surgery that not only changed his appearance but was “necessary for a fresh beginning” at 185 pounds. Silva posted a video blog to address his surgery.

If your at work or just don’t feel like watching here’s some of what Silva said via MMAJunkie:

“There was a lot of speculation about my surgery,” said Silva, who spoke in his native Portuguese and provided English subtitles. “People are noticing my eyes, and this is what happened. [The doctor] scraped the eye’s bones. I’ve had more than 200 stitches … in the area of the eyes. So the doctor scraped my skull, so that (swelling) will go down.”

“The goal is for me not to get cut so easily in my next fight because before I was receiving big cuts only from scratches. I was always having to get seven, 10, 15 stitches, and this was hurting my performance.”

“I fixed my nose, and now I’m breathing better, snoring less,” said Silva, who said he suffered from sleep apnea and awoke four or five times per night. “Now I can sleep through the night, and I’m feeling very good.”

So there you have it.  I’m excited for the new Silva.  You might be shocked to learn that despite his long and storied MMA career Silva is only 33 years old.  And despite a 1-3 UFC record all signs point to a Silva resurgence.  The surgery will help,  the long break will help (remember this a guy fighting every couple months for 10 years) and the move to a lighter weight class will help.

Wanderlei Silva was one of the fighters that made me fall in love with this sports and personally I hope he can get back to the top.

Diego Sanchez Inks A New Deal

According to Sherdog.com

Diego Sanchez signed a new eight-fight deal with the UFC on Tuesday, clearing the path for a lightweight title bid against B.J. Penn at UFC 107 in Dec. 12 in Memphis, Tenn.  Sanchez’s representation, Jeff Clark of NCFC Management, confirmed the fighter’s re-signing with the promotion.

As much as I dislike Sanchez you have to respect him as a fighter. He’s 21-2 and 10-2 in the UFC. His only losses are to Koscheck and Fitch both by decision and both at 170 pounds. Having moved all the way down to lightweight from 185 pounds Sanchez now has a size advantage on almost every lightweight.

While his record says he deserves a title shot stylistically B.J Penn is a terrible match-up for Sanchez. While Diego’s stand-up gets better every day he’s no real threat to knockout B.J. And while Sanchez typical M.O. is ground and pound it just won’t work against Penn. Penn’s take-down defense is just too good and even if he gets Penn to the ground Penn could sweep or submit Sanchez.

8 fights might seem like a lot but it’s likely going to span about three years and despite his tremendous amount of experience Sanchez is only 28.

Henderson A Free Agent?

Lots of MMA news the past few days.  Haven’t even gotten around to posting all of it but this story from Sports Illustrated caught my eye.  Dan Henderson currently has no UFC contract and is technically a free agent.  No wonder Henderson has been able to be so selective about what fights he will take.  His refusal to fight anyone other then Silva or Machida makes a lot more sense now.

Now in the story Henderson indicates he’d like to say with the UFC because of the top level of competition and says he’s working on a new deal.  However, if I’m Strikeforce right now I see an opportunity.  Henderson is a big name and draw and stealing him away from the UFC would be a coup for Strikeforce.  So what could Strikeforce offer Hendo that the UFC couldn’t?

Fedor.

That’s right I said it.  Let’s be honest Strikeforce has no real fighters to challenge Fedor.  Despite Henderson’s size he would be a legitimate threat to Fedor…well at least as legitimate a threat when your talking about someone fighting Fedor.

So there you have it Strikeforce.  Continue to make your prescene known and steal away one of the UFC’s top fighters.

Yanks Do Some Good

You know how this year the Yanks passed around a WWE title belt to however played the best that game?  Well the at the end of the season the Yankees are selling the belt, via auction, and donating the profits to Camp Sundown.  If you don’t remember Camp Sundown s a year-round camp in upstate New York for children suffering from Xeroderma Pigmentosum.  Earlier this year the kids from Camp Sundown came to Yankee stadium and after the game the Yanks held a carnival for them.

You can bid on the belt here.

That my friends is a one of a kind souvenir and the money goes to a good cause.  Go bid on it.

Marcus Davis v. Ben Saunders Signed For UFC 106

Oh baby. Let me tell you about how excited I am for this one. In one corner, you have “The Irish Hand Grenade” who is one of MMA’s best boxers with improved Muay Thai and excellent take down defense. In the other, You have “Killa B,” who was undefeated before getting swatted back down the welterweight ranks by Mike Swick in Germany at UFC 99. Saunders is an excellent striker and makes exciting fights with just about anyone.

Another reason that this fight is awesome is that both of these fighters need this fight. Davis also lost in Germany when he dropped a controversial decision to Dan Hardy. That loss was especially difficult for Davis, who was sick of Hardy running his mouth and was threatening to kill the Brit by the time they got in the ring. Before that loss, Davis had won 7 of his 8 UFC fights, with his only loss also coming to Swick.

Expect this fight to be a standup war. Saunders lost to Swick because he was staying in the pocket too much and got caught a bunch of times. If he does that with Davis, The Irish Hand Grenade might actually kill him.
