Beat Writer: Merriman’s Done In San Diego

I love it when Kevin Acee breaks news. It makes me feel important considering we had him on Fourth Down on WCWP way before he became the go to Chargers guy that he has become. Today, he’s making some conjecture about the future of star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, and the news isn’t good for the former Maryland star. Here’s the jist of it from Rotoworld:

According to beat writer Kevin Acee, this will be Shawne Merriman’s last season with the Chargers.
Acee said this week’s issue with Tila Tequila has no bearing on his status with the team. Merriman’s contract is up at the end of the season and the Chargers weren’t going to bring him back anyway. But Acee then speculates that Merriman could end up parting ways with the Chargers before this season is over, in part because general manager A.J. Smith is sick of dealing with Merriman’s off-field issues.

I already speculated this much, but it’s interesting to hear it from a source that is so close to the team. We already know that A.J. Smith holds no loyalty to his players from the Drew Brees-Phillip Rivers debacle, and in this case it’s not like Merriman has earned any loyalty to begin with. As for him being cut before the end of the year, It would be shocking to me if that happened. He’s still an elite level pass rusher, and a team like Green Bay would kill to have a guy like him.

It’s just like I said yesterday, If rookie Larry English performs well, Merriman is as good as gone.

When I Wake Up Will Brandon Marshall Be A Jet?

I wrote yesterday about how I’ve been falling asleep with ESPN on.  Recently without fail there’s some NFL news story that seems be waking me up every day.  Coordinators are getting fired and big name players are getting traded.

With that being said I’ve got a strange feeling that when I wake up Brandon Marshall will be a Jet.

Call it a gut feeling but the pieces seem to be adding up:

  • The Jets having a glaring hole at WR and Marshall would solve that problem.  He would not only stretch the field for the Jets but, give them a WR who can run after the catch.  Also, having a big target for rookie QB Mark Sanchez is a plus.  Marshall, Keller, Cotchery, Washington…all of a sudden that’s a tough offense to deal with.
  • The Jets seem to have no qualms with trading future draft picks to land a big time player.  Farve, Lito Sheppard and so on.  Woody Johnson also seems to have an infatuation with the “star” player.
  • The Jets made a seemingly bizarre trade today, they traded a future draft pick for QB Kevin O’Connell.  It’s not that O’Connell isn’t a good player, the former 3rd rounder waived by the Pats is a hot commodity around the NFL.  What’s bizarre is that the Jets now have 4 QB’s on their roster (Sanchez,  Clemens, Ainge, O’Connell.)  Why would a team carry 4 QB’s, let alone 4 developmental QB’s.  It’s a move that doesn’t seem to make sense unless another move followed it.
  • What if the Jets got O’Connell to trade to the Broncos?  We know O’Connell was coached by Josh McDaniels in New England, we know that McDaniels doesn’t seem to be sold on Kyle Orton long term and we know that the Broncos put in a waiver claim for O’Connell.
  • We also know that McDaniels and Marshall aren’t on good terms. The Cutler trade taught us to expect the unexpected from Denver.
  • And then there’s Kerry Rhodes Twitter.  Yes, Twitter.  Rhodes has been saying a big announcement is coming, even going as far as to hint as a Marshall acquisition.  Rhodes last Tweet was “”Sorry 4 the hold up fans but this stuff sometime takes time but just stay tuned u will find out soon.  Not trying to hold u guys in limbo!”"  It’s a crazy world we live in that Twitter has to be considered a legitimate news source.  After all just days ago Chad Ocho Cinco broke the Andre Smith story before ESPN, or anyone else, had it.

Again the stars seem to be aligning.  The trade makes sense for both sides and we know that both teams have had Marshall discussions.  I get the feeling that when I wake up Brandon Marshall will be a Jet.

Gegard Mousasi’s Affliction Shirt!

There isn’t another light heavyweight in the game right now that has the kind of potential that Mousasi does. After absolutely eating Renato “Babalu” Sobral alive at Strikeforce’s last card, The Red Devil team member has about as much buzz around him as any man in the sport. Now, you can own his personal Affliction T-shirt.

Affliction Mousasi Signature Series Tee

It’s a typical Affliction tee. A ton of cool art, including what looks like a coat of arms in the middle that is reminiscent of the old Georges St. Pierre Warcrest shirt. To buy one of your own, check out the Affliction Mousasi Signature Series Tee on MMAWarehouse.com.
