As I was cooking myself some dinner, I noticed something on the PFT newswire that is so crazy that it is awesome.
The Saints signed Daniel Sunday to their practice squad, according NFL’s Jason La Canfora. With Joey Harrington off the roster, Daniel will learn at the feet of three outstanding quarterback teachers: Saints coach Sean Payton, Drew Brees, and Mark Brunell.
Reports surfaced yesterday Daniel wouldn’t be back with Washington, but La Canfora says that wasn’t their choice. Redskins coach reportedly Jim Zorn told Daniel he wanted him.
This is so brilliant. If anyone in this league knows how to excel as an undersized QB it’s Brees who has been my choice for the league’s best quarterback for two years running. Sean Payton is also a QB guru, and someone employs a spread-type offense which is more similar what Daniel ran at Missouri than just about else in the NFL.
What in god’s name is going on right now? This has been the weirdest cut down day of all time. There is always some teams that make some moves to improve their team right about now, but there have been some really strange moves that have placed weird players in weird places.
The most recent has former Giants TE Michael Matthews heading to New England via trade. The Giants will receive a 2011 conditional draft pick for the man who couldn’t crack their final 53.
My main question remains: What does Bill Bellichick want with Matthews? He’s a pretty decent blocker, but any Giant fan will tell you that throwing to Matthews is like throwing the ball into the hands of the other team. He can’t catch, and even when he does, he can’t seem to hold on to the ball.
His role in New England will that of a blocking tight end, but you are telling me that with over 700 players being cut yesterday, Bellichick couldn’t find some other guy that wouldn’t have cost the Pats anything in terms of compensation?
A very strange move indeed. Whatever. Maybe now Hakeem Nicks will wear 88 instead of 18.
I hate people that give MMA a bad name. We are making so much progress in the fight for respect in the national media. Then, there always is some idiot on a small show that does something stupid and sets us all back. Well, here we go again.
Promoters, please don’t ever use this guy again. He is nothing but a thug. He deserves to be banned from the sport for life. Fans, don’t judge all fighters and fans of this sport by the stupidity of this one man. I know what people are going to say about this. They are going to ask why I would post the video If I hate the action so much. Here’s the thing: I want people to see what real MMA fans think of idiots like this. I want people to see us denounce him.
Wow, I am a terrible person for writing that headline. It makes Shawne Merriman sound like he went nuts on a trip to Mexico rather than actually committing a legit crime by battering a D-Level MTV celebrity.
For those you have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the summary from PFT:
This year, the question is whether Merriman will be able to play after allegedly assaulting a D-level television celebrity named Tila Tequila.
Merriman allegedly “choked and physically restrained” Tequila as she tried to leave his San Diego residence.
He was taken into custody at 3:45 a.m. local time and charged with battery and false imprisonment. Tequila was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The timing for Merriman is horrendous. He has been talking routinely regarding a plan to have a huge season in 2009, in the hopes of silencing critics who say that his play dropped dramatically after his suspension for steroids. As he enters his contract year, Merriman could be facing discipline from the team and/or the league for the arrest.
For Merriman, this could really be a huge setback for the former Terps career. As was said in the blockquote, Merriman has already been suspended for steroid once, but since that technically doesn’t count as the same thing as legal troubles, he won’t be considered a second offender. As for the Chargers, they now enter a scenario where their best case is Merriman’s worst case. If Merriman is suspended for any amount of time, then they will need a huge contribution from rookie Larry English. If they get that, they will likely let Merriman walk at the end of the year and go with English and veteran Shaun Phillips rushing the passer.
To think Shawne, all of this for a 4′9 chick that kinda looks like a dude.
Update @ 7:00 PM: According to PFT, Merriman plans on using the defense that she was drunk and he was trying to prevent her from driving. Hell, I know that that I frequently choke my friends trying to get their keys from them.
The past few days I’ve fallen asleep with the T.V. on. And without fail every morning I’ve woken up to a crazy NFL story. First Chan Gailey was fired, then Jeff Jago, then Turk Schonert. This morning I woke up to Adam Schefter’s comforting voice and the news that Richard Seymour was now an Oakland Raider. Richard Seymour was traded to Oakland for a 2011 first round pick. Yes, you read that right 2011.
At first glance this trade is shocking but the more you think about it you realize it’s highway robbery for the Patriots.
- Seymour is turning 30 this year and has been very injury prone. He’s played exactly one 16 game season since 2002.
- Seymour while still a very good player hasn’t been as dominant as he was early in his career.
- The big thing is that Seymour’s contract expires at years end. So while Oakland could have just waited to sign him in free agency they seemed to really want him for 2010, likely a lost year anyway. Needless to say it’s going to cost a boatload of money to resign Seymour.
- There’s a good chance the Raiders are going to terrible in 2010 and 2011 so the draft pick will likely be a very high one.
- Why 2011? Because Bill Bellichick is smarter then you and realizes that by 2011 there is a very good chance there will be a rookie pay scale in the NFL.
The Patriots are smarter then anyone else in the NFL. Looking down the road both Seymour and Wilfork are both due mammoth extensions at years end. They weren’t going to be able to resign both. So for 6 months of Seymour the Pats were able to steal a first round draft pick that might be #1 overall.
Anyone ever heard of Sporcle? It’s a site that gives you blank slates and tells you to name stuff. For instance, it gives you a blank table with years listed and you have to name Pixar movies. You type them in, they go next to the year, and when you give up, you click “Give Up” and it tells you the answers.
Since I’m a stats nerd, the best part for me is seeing what percentage were picked.
There are also some cool NHL-related games. Check out…
Try to name every single Calder Trophy winner in NHL history. Well, since that is VERY tough, try doing the right column, which starts with 1984-85/Pittsburgh Penguins and ends with 2008-09/Columbus Blue Jackets. See if you can beat my score – 7 wrong from ‘84-’09. Kind of embarrassing when you realize which ones you got wrong.
And my personal favorite: http://www.sporcle.com/games/sportscities.php – Name the 13 cities in America that have teams in all 4 pro sports. Sorry Bryan, MLS doesn’t count. (I got 11 of 13. One of them was my fault; the other I blame the game.) Let me know how you do and which you get wrong.
