Week One Quick College Football Picks

I’m off to Indiana, PA to call some D2 ball on the radio, but here are my quick picks for the rest of week one. Keeping with my bowl mania trend, I was 2-2 on Thursday night.

#6 Ohio State Over Navy

#9 Penn State over Akron

#22 Iowa over Northern Iowa

#15 Georgia Tech over Jacksonville State

#23 Notre Dame over Nevada
- maybe its my pessimism, but I think this one is close in the third quarter. Think last year’s San Diego State game. That being said, Clausen has a big fourth quarter and ND wins by 14.

#4 USC over San Jose State- Who’s pumped to see Matt Barkley? I know I am.

#24 Nebraska over Florida Atlantic

#1 Florida over CSU

#3 Oklahoma over #20 BYU- BYU beat writer Jeff Call was on my show last month and questioned Max Hall’s ability to play well in big games. We’ll see early on if he’s improved. TE Jermaine Gresham is out for this one, that’s sure to effect a Sooner offense that will be less explosive to begin with. But the biggest storyline??…What if a punt hits the scoreboard?!?!

#25 Kansas over North Colorado

#2 Texas over L.A Monroe

#12 California over Maryland

#11 LSU over Washington

#8 Mississippi over Memphis

#21 UNC over Citadel

Two to change plans for

#9 Oklahoma State over #13 Georgia- I think this is one of those matchups where you have to pick the home team.

#7 Va. Tech over #5 Alabama

The Upset of the Week

Miami over #18 Florida State

Swick Out Of UFC 103…

Mike Swick is out of UFC 103 with a concussion:

“I am out of UFC 103,” he wrote on Twitter. “It sucks, and I am sorry guys. I got foot swept while sparring this week and lost my legs. Landed on back of my head and neck and suffered a pretty bad concussion.”

British fighter Paul Daley is in. Daley is one of Englands top Welterweights and a vetran of Elite XC. He sports a 21-8-2 record with notable wins over John Alessio and Duane Ludwig.

I question the logic of replacing Swick, in a number one contenders bout, with a guy who has never fought in the UFC. Why not Dan Hardy or Marcus Davis? Yes, it would obviously be tough for them to take a fight on short notice but don’t they deserve a shot at top competition more then Daley?

I questioned the legitimacy of having Swick/Kampman be a number one contenders fight but Daley/Kampnman is a total joke. What if Daley wins? Does the UFC really give him GSP? Do they have the winner fight Swick?

It’s a shame Swick got hurt. Not only does it rob the fans of a fine match up but the UFC has a bad habit of making guys who were close to the top work their way back up even when pulling out a fight was beyond their control. Just ask Karo Payriasian who was suppose to fight Matt Hughes for the title and never made it back.

Matt Hughes Signs A New UFC Contract…

Wonderful! Let’s bring back my least favorite fighter in the entire world for more of his bible-toting, crazy farm boy act! Ugh, I was hoping we were done with Hughes, but I knew that if Dana didn’t snap him up, Strikeforce would have come lurking and capitalized on all the attention he had gotten as the UFC welterweight champ for all of those years. Here’s the story from MMA Weekly:

First it was Randy Couture, now it’s Matt Hughes. The UFC seems to be locking down former champions left and right.

Hughes, a former UFC welterweight champion, on Thursday affirmed his desire to remain active, stating that he has signed a new multi-fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“Last week I went out to Vegas and I signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, which is much like my last contract,” said Hughes via a post on his official website.

Who he will fight next is not yet clear, although his most recent opponent, Matt Serra, whom he defeated by unanimous decision at UFC 98 in May, would like another shot at him.

As much as I would love to see Matt Serra smash Hughes, it probably won’t happen. Although there is an argument to made that you could scored that fight a draw, even our Long Island-based crowd that was watching UFC 98 had Hughes winning the fight. Serra’s best bet continues to be at 155.

To make the re-signing of Hughes even worse, look at this:

In an interesting aside, Hughes also mentioned that he’d like to branch out into Ted Nugent territory, which seemed to have the UFC brass’ approval.

“I also brought up the fact that I wanted to do a hunting show,” he said on his website, “and they thought that would be a good thing.”

Oh, Jesus.

The Dragon Is Badass…

Usually UFC pre-fight press conferences offer little to nothing of value.   Rarely do things happen that are noteworthy.  The fighters are introduced, they pose in the cliche “fists high” pose and that’s it.

And really the UFC 104 presser was no different.  Except for one thing….

Machida is wearing a suit?  Really?  I mean how bad-ass do you have to be to wear a suit to an event where everyone is wearing T-Shirts and flip-flops.

Who knew the Dragon was so stylish?
