I’ve been a strong supporter of the UFL for quite awhile and think that they have done a decent job putting together a league so far. Instead of trying to fight the NFL, they are instead just telling the truth: They are essentially a developmental league.
That fact was hammered home again today when PFT reported that the base pay for most UFL players will be $35,000 dollars per year. While that may be all that the owners of the teams can afford, it certainly makes them a last resort to most football players in the world. Of course, there are salary escalators that will allow the players to make more, but for most players, the 35k is going to be it.
The only exceptions to this are Kickers, punters and long snappers will only make $25,000 and Quarterbacks will make more than that, but no numbers have been released. This seems to be a pattern as the quarterbacks were also selected separately than the rest of the players. I didn’t know that J.P Losman required such excellent treatment.
