George Sherill Traded To The Dodgers…(Update)

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse breaks this one:

Ed Price of Fanhouse is reporting that the Dodgers have acquired George Sherrill from the Orioles.
If true, Sherrill would work as a setup man in front of closer Jonathan Broxton. Sherrill has a 2.40 ERA, 20 saves and a 39/13 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings this season.

I’ve never been Sherill’s biggest fan, but he certainly is a decent upgrade over a lot of the crap that is in the Dodgers current pen. Look for Joe Torre to do his thing and overuse Sherill as much as he possibly can.

In terms of compensation, The O’s prefer Josh Bell to Blake DeWitt according to MLB Trade Rumors, but I can’t really see the Dodgers parting with a decent prospect for a setup man. Expect it to be Blake DeWitt. Then again, this is Joe Torre and we all know the loves him some veterans.

(Update:  The Dodgers did in fact send of Power hitting prospect Josh Bell in addition to right handed pitcher, Steve Johnson.)

NY Times: Ortiz, Ramirez Tested Positive For Steroids in 2003

Boom. Welcome to the 2004 Steroid Sox. At least our 27 championships were legit.

The NY Times is reporting that two more of those magical 104 names from the “anonymous” tests in 2003 are none other than Boston favorites Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz.

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were among the 104 major league players listed as having tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003, lawyers with knowledge of the results told The New York Times.

The two were key members of the Boston Red Sox World Series championship teams in 2004 and 2007.

The lawyers did not name the substances Ramirez and Ortiz tested positive for, The Times reported.

On Thursday, before the Red Sox-Athletics game at Fenway Park, when Ortiz was asked about the 2003 drug test, he told The Times: “I’m not talking about that anymore,” he said. “I have no comment.”

One Red Sox official told ESPN.com’s Amy K. Nelson that he had “no idea whatsoever” that both Ortiz and Ramirez were on the list, adding that the team has been relatively controversy-free this year.

We all knew that Ramirez was a user because he was suspended earlier in the season for 50 games for using female fertility pills. However, Ortiz was a strong voice against steroids when A-Rod was caught using earlier this year. There are a ton of people who thought that Big Papi might have been on the juice when he went from mediocre power hitter in Minnesota to home run monster in Fenway.

If nothing else, this just cements my theory on the whole steroid era. We can’t penalize individual people mainly because it appears that anyone who is anyone was on some form of performance enhancer. It wouldn’t shock me if even the purest of names turned out to be on the magical list of 104.

Jason Hirsh Traded To The Yanks

The Yankees added a pitcher today in the form of Rockies farmhand Jason Hirsh. Hirsh is a righty who had a good season in 2007 before he was hit in the leg with a line drive. He broke his leg and never seemed to fully recover. The following year he tore the labrum in his right shoulder and missed most of the year. This year, he was struggled in Triple-A, amassing an ERA of the devils number 6.66. The main reason for his struggles is a drop in the velocity of his fastball, which you used to be his best weapon.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman is attempting to catch lightning in a bottle. If Hirsh can somehow turn it around, he could be called up as a bullpen arm, or as a spot starter. After all, he’s gotta be better than Brett Tomko.

Don’t expect the player to be named later to be anything more than an extra arm.
