How About The Snowman?

I have a strange relationship with Jeff Monson. He’s known as one of the best Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu guys in in the world, and he’s a heavyweight, which makes it that much more impressive. He had this great article written about him in ESPN the Magazine awhile ago about he’s an anarchist, and I’ll tell you it was a hell of an interesting read. I’m not really a fan, but I certainly find him interesting.

Now, with the race to replace Josh Barnett at Affliction Trilogy on, It appears that Monson wants to get in there an fight Fedor according to MMA Weekly.

Monson, who has vied for a shot at Fedor on several occasions, commented on the situation to MMAWeekly.com late on Wednesday evening.

“I’m the guy to beat Fedor. He’s a great fighter. I’d definitely love to see me fight Fedor. It’s a perfect match-up. He’s the guy I’m destined to fight,” Monson said. “I want to be the guy to beat him. I’d definitely love to be carried off afterward, after I submit him. My goal is to be the best in the world, even if it’s for one fight.”

There have been rumors for years that a Monson/Fedor match-up would be made, but the bout has never come to fruition.

It doesn’t seem destined to happen though. Instead, We will probably get to see trumped up 185-pounder Vitor Belfort fight “The Last Emperor.” I can’t tell you how little that fight interests me. Now, If you threw Monson in there, at the very least we would be getting to see a real heavyweight battle. If Fedor kills him, then fine. At least, we’d get to see two deserving guys in the same weight class fight.

Give me the Snowman, or give me death.

Bas Interviews Fedor…

Fedor has been getting a ton of press recently due to people thinking that he is going to be the man that saves MMA from Brock Lesnar. However, fans of the sport know him for much more than that. He is undefeated in his last 26 fights, and many consider him the best fighter in the world right now. Here’s an interview with Fedor, and to make it better, the incomparable Bas Rutten is the man asking the questions.

UFC 101 Hype Video!

I love these UFC videos. They get me so hyped for these fights. Not to mention that Jason gave me 4-1 odds on Kenny Florian beating B.J. Penn and is going to owe me 100 dollars on August 9th.

The card is on August 8th, in Philly.

Is Halladay About To Be A Rockie?

Here’s an interesting tidbit from MLBTradeRumors vis BP

According to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, the Rockies pulled pitching prospect Jhoulys Chacin from his start tonight “as a precaution for possible, future organizational moves.”  Chacin tossed one inning for the Double A Tulsa Drillers, tallying just nine pitches.

The line “as a precaution for possible, future organizational moves” is pretty telling. Read between the lines and it should say “Chacin might be about to get traded and if he suddenly got hurt that would suck.”

After a rocky (pun intended) start the Rockies find themselves right in the thick of things as the deadline approaches. With Fowler with the MLB club Chacin is the Rockies top prospect. Chacin is not overpowering but has five pitches, inlcuding a sinker, that does lead to strikeouts. Scouts also praise his poise and maturity on the mound. Ideally Chacin could be a front of the rotation starter. At AA this year Chacin is 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA and 86 strikeouts.

[Update: Could the injury to Manny Corpas have anything to with this?  The Rockies needed a reliever before he went down and have been linked to Chad Qualls and George Sherrill but Chacin seems like an awful lot give up for either of those guys.]

The Rays Are Lurking

Want a sleeper in the Roy Halladay chase? How bout the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are 52-43, third in the AL East, but their run differential suggests they are much better than that. They Rays are +79, that’s four runs better than the second place Red Sox and ten runs better than the first place Yankees. The Rays are right in the race and could look to add pieces at the deadline.

The Rays opened this season with a payroll of just over $63 Million, up $20 million from 2009. It’s hard to say for sure if Andrew Friedman will be allowed to add payroll but my guess is that he could. The Rays are shedding a lot of salary in 2010, Percival, Bradford and Iwamura’s contracts all expire (assuming they are replaced by cheaper players in should clear about 11 million in salary next year.)  The Rays are one of the few teams that can afford to part with some of their elite level talent.

The Rays have two legitimate blue chippers in their farm system in Tim Beckham and Wade Davis. Davis, 23, is a power pitching right hander who projects as a front of the line starter. At AAA Davis has 3.22 ERA and 103 K’s (in 114 innings.) He’s only walked 47 and sports a 1.29 WHIP. Beckham was the number one overall pick just a year ago. He has all the tools to be an All-Star shortstop but at 19 might not be ready till 2011 at the earliest.

The talent doesn’t stop there. Desmond Jennings, a 23 year old center-fielder, is crushing at AA right now. He sports an impressive .326/.409/.509 line, with 36 steals. Reid Brignac is a 23 year old shortstop with impressive defensive skills and power. He’s currently at AAA hitting .287/.343/.458. Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson, Nick Barnese, Jake McGee and Kyle Lobstein are all very solid pitching prospects.

What’s more impressive is how young the Rays roster is in general. All of these players were under 25 as of Opening Day 2009.

David Price, LHP
B.J. Upton, CF
Evan Longoria, 3B
Scott Kazmir, LHP
Matt Garza, RHP
Dioner Navarro, C
Matt Joyce, LF

When you add it all up it’s seems curious that no one is linking the Rays to any of the marquee players that could be available in trades. What other teams could sacrifice marquee prospects without totally gutting their minor league system?

What if the Rays added Roy Halladay to a rotation already consisting of Shileds, Kazmir and Garza. Niemanan and/or Price could shift to the bullpenn, killing two birds with one stone. If the Rays offered Davis, Brignac and two of the Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson, Nick Barnese, Jake McGee and Kyle Lobstein group don’t the Jays have to take that offer?

Even scarier is the Rays potential to make Cleavland a “godfather offer.” What if the Rays could trade for both Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee. What if the Rays offered David Price, Tim Beckham and other lesser prospects for the pair. Wouldn’t the Indians have to consider it? And while losing elite prospects might be a tough sell for the Rays wouldn’t the Lee/V-Mart combo (under control for next year as well, plus compensation picks if they leave as free agents) put them over the top for this year and next?

The possibilities are endless just don’t expect Tampa to go away quietly into the night. They were not a one year flash in the pan and as a Yankee fan the scare the hell out of me.

The Rams Make Another Smart Move…

I’m on record saying that I think the Rams are looking good for the upcoming season. I think that they can be a team that is a spoiler down the stretch while improving their record to somewhere close to .500.

They took another step towards that yesterday when they traded for a solid veteran receiver in Ronald Curry. They only had to move DT Orien Harris, who is nothing more than an okay depth player.

I’ve liked Ronald Curry for awhile now. His best season came with the Raiders when he caught 62 balls for 727 yards, but only 1 TD. That being said, it was the Raiders and their offense is terrible. I think that big Ron could be a great slot receiver in the west coast offense that the Rams are going to install this year.

Steve Spags has a good thing going in St.Louie.
