Bob’s Pickle Pops???

So I know Anthony and the rest of the 3ss team will probably be upset with me for this post, but honestly I really don’t care. After all I did just spend the last week working on this website and putting it together so I deserve some creative freedom.

Now to get down to the reason why I’m writing this post. This evening while I was sitting at home, doing the best I could to kill brain cells while watching TV, a segment came on that I just had to say something about. This segment was on the TV show Unwrapped on The Food Network. I know what you’re thinking, how bad could something on Food Network be? Well let me tell you, this was perhaps one of the most disgusting and strange foods I have ever heard of and/or seen. This product is called the Pickle Pop.

What is the Pickle Pop you ask? Well let me tell you, its an ice pop, made out of pickle juice…Yes I did just say an ice pop made out of pickle juice. Before you ask, yes I do love ice pops, I can eat them everyday of the week and not get tired of them. Yet this Pickle Pop idea is the furthest you can get from sounding appealing.  I mean you might as well take your jar of pickles from your fridge and just drink the juice in the container because it is a key part of the recipe and is essentially what you are doing.

But wait, there’s more! On top of the pickle juice, they also squeeze all of the juice out of the pickles as well. So now you have pickle juice (brine) plus the juice squeezed out of pickles. They now take this, put it in an ice pop holder and freeze it. Sounds delicious…Right?? Well apparently enough people find it tasty that the guy who manufactures them has actually set up a packaging plant to package his Pickle Pops.

If this is not the most absurd idea for a food product that you have ever heard of please in the comments leave your ideas and thoughts. I am very interested to see…

Without further ado here is the actual segment from The Food Network:

Taking A Big Gulp…

Touche salesman.

As a big PRIDE backer, I hate to admit that Anthony is right. Count me among the many who questioned the UFC’s worldwide legitimacy before the Pride acquisition. I thought the Pride guys would walk into the octagon and ride back to Japan with Chuck Liddell’s head on a pike.

As Anthony pointed out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. To go along with his theories, I think that steroids (Yes, I said it. All the PRIDE guys were juiced out of their minds. Don’t kid yourself) played a much bigger part than we could have imagined.

Think about what would happen to Major League baseball if there was no steroid testing. Baseball is a sport where the main needed attribute is hand eye coordination. Think about the effects of steroids on a sport that requires; strength, aggression, stamina and most importantly muscle recovery. Training for fight after fight is a lot easier if aided by Performance Enhancing Drugs.

What you didn’t mention was the “freak show” aspect of PRIDE. Japanese people love the David vs. Goliath angle. That meant that in between fights against top competition, PRIDE fighters got to pad their stats against walking talking jokes.

Look at Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira:

On New Years Eve 2004, he had an epic battle with Fedor Emilaneko. After that he fought the immortal (1-4) Pawel Nastula on 6/26/05.  On 2/26/2006 he fights Kiyoshi Tamura, who weighs probably 205 lbs soaking wet.

On 5/5/2006, he fights this guy.

Zulo

A.K.A the 5-6 Zuluzinho.

So, by the time Nog faces his real next test, Fabrico Werdum on 7/1/06, a full year has gone by since the Nastula fight and 19 months have elasped since he fought Fedor!

Then, Nog comes to the UFC and beats Heath Herring, who is a C+ level fighter but still better than most of the competition in Japan, and almost gets KO’d in the process.  Five months later he beats Tim Sylvia, who has since been exposed as a joke of a fighter, in unimpressive fashion. Ten months later, he gets KO’d by Frank Mir.

Up until the Mir fight, Nog had never been finished in his storied MMA Career, and of all people Frank Mir (yes that Frank Mir) is the first to do it?

It shocked the world at the time but maybe it shouldn’t have. Maybe the reason Nog looked sluggish in that fight is because he didn’t have the aid of PED’s. Maybe it’s because he didn’t have 19 months to recover between real, competitive fights. Maybe it’s because after almost 40 pro fights his age (33) finally caught up to him. Maybe it’s just that he was never that good in the first place. Who knows.

What we do know for sure is that PRIDE built up the legacy of their fighters but having them smash scrubs. It’s sad but it’s true.

It’s Time to Swallow Your PRIDE…

As Wanderlei Silva looked less like the “Axe Murderer” of old then ever before on Saturday night, I couldn’t help but think about all the PRIDE fighters that have absolutely fizzled in the UFC. Silva is 1-3 in the UFC. Cro Cop was a shell of his former self, beat a guy who doesn’t belong in the UFC on Saturday, and then bounced for deal with the less competitive DREAM. “Shogun” Rua isn’t quite back from the dead like the UFC would lead you to believe after beating a washed up Chuck Liddell. Even Dan Henderson is just 2-2 since entering the Octagon.

Sure, there are some successes. Rampage Jackson made himself a household name with his win over Liddell and trademark wackiness. Anderson Silva was the best fighter in the world until something in his head came loose. However, besides those two being among the best in their weight class, the move from PRIDE to the UFC has been difficult for most of the fighters. The reasons? Maybe it’s the move to the cage. Maybe it’s the changes in the rules. (You used to be able to knee on the ground in PRIDE, as well as stomp on your opponent.) Maybe it’s the drug testing that PRIDE didn’t do. Who knows?

That’s why we need to move on. We need to start realizing that it’s more important to focus on the next generation of mixed martial artists than focus on the older, worn veterans from across the pacific. The guys from PRIDE are what they are at this point. We know what they are bringing to the table. All of them have had multiple fights. Most of them have disappointed us. Most of them are getting up there in years.

Jon Jones Germans Stephan Bonnar...

Underneath them, There are guys who are looking for the spotlight that they are hogging. While Rua is getting a title shot that he doesn’t deserve, guys like Jon Jones (8-0, 2-0 UFC, pictured above “pwning” Stephan Bonnar) are toiling away on under cards. When Wanderlei Silva moves to middleweight, he is sure to leapfrog younger fighters like Michael Bisping (17-1, 7-1 UFC) and Demian Maia (10-0, 5-0 UFC). How much longer can we hold on to a 32-year old who’s wildman style doesn’t lend to longevity when the there’s an Ultimate Fighter Winner and an undefeated fighter waiting in the wings?

It’s not like I want to see all the PRIDE fighters sent out to pasture. They are all great athletes and I love watching them fight. I just want to see new stars made and nurtured as well. ZUFFA has done a good job of this, but I think that being star struck with these aging champions may have clouded their judgment just a little.
