Yet Another Argument For Balanced Offense…

By Anthony

I love tearing down arguments that embody Jason’s beliefs about life, so at 3:30am I find myself thinking of ways to prove that his ideas that the downfield passing game is the key to football is misguided, and flat out wrong.

So, Here we are slightly past the quarter pole of the NFL season and there are only two unbeatens left in the league. One is the league’s best defense in the Tennessee Titans, and the other is the defending champion New York Giants. What do these two things have in common?

They both execute offense that rely on power running games, and a balanced, consistent passing attack. However, it doesn’t end there. Let’s take a look at every division leader at this point of the season and their current standing in Time of Possesion.

NFC East: New York Giants - 2nd

(This actually proves my point best. The Redskins, who are second in the division are 4th in league, while the Cowboys and Eagles, Jason Comack favorites for the league’s best teams, are 12th and 16th respectively.)

NFC North: Chicago Bears - 3rd

NFC South: Carolina Panthers - 7th

NFC West: Arizona Cardinals - 5th

This principle clearly applies to the NFC, because the best team in ToP in each division is currently leading their respective sect. However, the AFC doesn’t prove it quite as much.

AFC East: Buffalo Bills - 17th (Anyone else Surprised by this? Thought they would be higher.)

AFC North: Pittsburgh Steelers: 14th

AFC South: Tennessee Titans: 19th

AFC West: Denver Broncos: 20th

In another quick exercise, Let’s look at the records of the top 5 teams in ToP:

1. Baltimore Ravens: 2-2

2. New York Giants: 4-0

3. Chicago Bears: 3-2

4. Washington Redskins: 4-1

5. Arizona Cardinals: 3-2

So, there it is. Hold the ball, win the game. It’s that simple.
