What to Make of Vince Young…

So…This is an interesting situation. We haven’t had a guy like Young seem to be ready to just give up his career right at it’s genesis because of what sounds like depression. It will be interesting, and probably heartbreaking to see what happens. However, there is a bigger issue here. Is it me or does this seem to be happening a lot more often?
Athletes seem to be falling into deep states of depression more now than ever before. I can think of two cases from college football last year alone: Oregon State Wide Receiver Sammie Stroughter and TCU Defensive End Tommy Blake.
Both of these men had fantastic articles written about their struggles. Blake’s was in the Sporting News and Stroughter was in ESPN, but does anyone seem to see a common thread here? Someone should be looking into the reason that this is happeneing to big time football players like these guys.
In Young’s case, it just seems to be high expectations crashing down on a guy who has probably never has failed at anything before in his entire life. Moreover, since he was such a huge star in college, all he hears is probably criticism over everything he isn’t rather than people celebrating what he is. It’s a damn shame.
I can’t beleive I’m saying this but as someone who has seen the depths that depression can plunge people who aren’t in the limelight to, I think VY should walk away from football right now. His best bet is to attempt to make a return in a couple years after he has gotten his issues under control. I think that more than a few teams would be likely to give him a shot.
