The Basketball Apocolypse…

By Anthony

A few years ago, I thought to myself “Damn, It must be hard to sign a free agent in soccer. Nevermind competing with 30 other teams, how about competing with the entire world?” Welcome to the reality of the new age basketball world we live in.

Former Stanford star and Atlanta Hawk Josh Childress signed a deal to play for a Greek team. Arizona commit Brandon Jennings decided that getting paid is more important than playing college ball, so he’s going to play his one year waiting period out in Europe. What the hell is going on here?

Well, we aren’t too far away from this becoming like soccer. We’ve seen the USA is no longer the only place that has high level basketball. Is any other league as good as the NBA? of course not. However, a player like Childress, who is a decent NBA player, could be probably be a stud in Greece and be showered with adulation and respect, not to mention money and greek chicks.

Also, the Jennings problem is the terribly worded NBA draft rules. Currently stating that a player has to wait one year after graduating high school to enter the league’s draft. After this, there should be an addendum that prevents recruits from playing in Europe for one year and coming back. Want to get paid? Enjoy your three years in Spain.

If I was a Basketball GM, I would not be happy right now. And wouldn’t eat soulvaki anymore out of principal.
