Silva to Light Heavyweight?

Interesting but not surprising. Right now the UFC has dominant champions at every level. Eventually the dominant fighters are going to have to move around in weight in order to create interesting matchups.

The way Anderson Silva’s fight against James Irvin is booked is an example of the smart marketing that has lead the UFC to its resurgence. Silva fighting on free T.V. grants him more exposure. Secondly, the matchup will provide Silva an opportunity to adjust to fighting larger fighters while still giving him a solid chance of a highlight reel K.O.

There is nothing left for Silva at middleweight. Bisping? Maybe but he isn’t ready for a title fight yet.

Speaking of dominant champions GSP has almost cleared out the welterweight division. What logical fights are left for him? Assuming he handles Fitch the only other logical fight at welterweight is Thiago Alves. The only other fights left for him are an inevitable rematch against B.J Penn (currently the lightweight champ) or Anderson Silva (currently the middleweight champ.)

And Penn is well on his way to clearing out the lightweight division. He’s already dismantled Sherk, Penn and Stevenson. Next up is either Florian or Huerta. There are a lot more logical matchups for him than there are for GSP. Logical opponent includes Tyson Griffin, Frankie Edgar, Heremes Franca and Clay Guida.

Look for more MMA coverage here in the near future.

I have a big UFC preview coming as well as a recap of tonights episode of The Ultimate Fighter.
