It’s a Familar Story…

High School Football star screws up after going away to college. Ends up dropping out and falling off the face of the earth. He’s villified by the fan base and turns into a punchline.

Jason Gwaltney hopes his story ends differently. That’s why Long Island’s best running back since Jim Brown signed on to become a part of the C.W. Post Football team. The former North Babylon star could be on the field for the Pioneers as soon as Saturday against Indiana of Pennslyvania.

Now, for those of you who aren’t aware, I am the color commentator for the Pioneers on WCWP 88.1 FM. You can also listen to all the games here. So, naturally I’m excited for an athlete of Gwaltney’s caliber to playing at a school I’m calling games for. Most people don’t understand how big the leap from Division I to Division II is. Gwaltney was playing at West Virigina during his freshman year, yes, That West Virigina. The one that routinely competes for National Titles. Now, He’ll be playing for Post at the division II level.

Ad for Post, Help couldn’t have come sooner. The offense in saturday’s game looked flat out sad and the team barely had a running game. If Gwaltney can come in and dominate, than Bryan Collins might be able to post a .500 record in a transitional year. See, Post just changed conferences from the Northeast-10 to the Pennslyvania State Athletic Cofnerence. That’s kinda like moving from the Sun Belt to the SEC. The PSAC houses a quarter of the Divison II top 25. The conference features strong running games from most teams. Now Post can boast the same.

Here’s another sweet part of this deal: Post is now a purveyor of the Spread Option that Rich Rodriguez implemented at West Virigina. That means that if Gwaltney remembers any of that old playbook, he’s already ahead of the game.

This week’s game starts at 12 noon on Saturday and here’s hoping I get to call a Jason Gwaltney touchdown.
