3SS NFL Season Predictions: AFC West

By Anthony

1. San Diego Chargers: 13-3

2. Denver Broncos: 7-9

3. Oakland Raiders: 6-10

4. Kansas City Chiefs: 2-14

Notes and Predictions:

- We all learned last year that one man can only screw up amazing talent so much. Norv Turner and his curse ended last season as the Chargers pouneded their way through to the AFC title game. They ran into some trouble there as LaDanian Tomlinson and Phillip Rivers both were injured and they fell to the then 18-0 Patriots. This year, they return practically everyone from last year’s stacked squad.

The concern over Shawne Merriman’s knee is completely legit. It’s a sill decision made by a guy who is getting some terrible advice. However, don’t forget about all the other talented players on this defense. I’m sure that Antonio Cromartie, Quentin Jammer, Eric Weddle, Luis Castillo and all the others will be just fine wihout Merriman.

- The Broncos are consistently one of the most overrated teams in the NFL. Mike Shannahan has everyone convinced that he is a genius when all his really is is the fantasy football anti-christ. While they’ll be able to run the ball again, I question what the passing game is going to get out of Tony Schleffler. Brandon Marshall is the best receiver to not have his own shoe, but he’ll miss the first game in a league where every game counts a whole lot. The defense is best described as pedestrian despite having Dre Bly and Champ Bailey manning the corners.

- The Raiders are on the right track. Keep telling yourself that. I criticized the pick of Darren McFadden a ton last April, and I still think that it was silly because three of the teams best offensive players (McFadden, Michael Bush and Justin Fargas) all play the same position. They could have used help at a lot of positions more than running back. Here’s a prediction: Recently released Patriot Chad Jackson will have 25+ receptions as a Raider. He’s the size/speed combo that Al Davis loves.

- The Chiefs are terrible. Just down right awful. Herm Edwards is a bad coach. The Offensive Line is bad. The Receivers are bad. The defense is bad. They are just bad. They’ll be on the clock when the season ends. I can’t even find a bright spot.
